Spring Festival(春节) is a big festival in China. Chinese like Spring Festival not because of the new clothes or nice food, but being with their family.

Can knots be a form of art? It is in China. It is used for decoration (装饰) on clothing or to hang on a wall. Skilled knot artists make knots that you might see sold in stores that you can take back with you. 

What Is a Chinese Knot?

A Chinese knot is a knot that is tied and woven (编织) from a single length of rope to be different shapes. Most knots have two cords (粗线) entering the knot from the top and two leaving from the bottom. Each kind of knot is named after its shape or the symbolic meaning that it carries.

Knot artists can use different colors, but they prefer deep red ones. The color red means good luck in China.

At first, people may have made them to record information before people started to write. One hundred thousand year old tools have been discovered that were probably used to tie and untie knots. 

It is known that they were used for artistic decoration and to express thoughts and feelings in the Tang Dynasty (618—907). The traditional art form was carried on by people as part of their culture.

Ancient and Modern Use of Artistic Knots

Even today, Chinese knots are rich in symbolic meaning, and they hold value when given as gifts or passed down through families. For example, in ancient times and even now, lovers may give a knot as a symbol of their love. The "true love knot" and the "double happiness knot" are given or used at weddings to express love and growing old together. 

Along with being symbolic gifts or messages, knots are still used if people wear traditional Chinese clothing. They are used as jewelry such as earrings and necklaces.

On Wednesday evening, we went to the {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(中心的，中央的)part of the town. It was the last day of the year and a large {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(人群)of people came. It was a {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(传统)that people {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(聚集) under the Town Hall clock to count down for the {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(即将到来的)new year. It would strike twelve in twenty minutes' time. People waited {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(耐心地). Fifteen minutes passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped. The big minute hand did not move. Everyone paid a{#blank#}7{#/blank#}to it and we all waited and waited, but nothing happened. Suddenly someone in the {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(角落)shouted, "It's two minutes past twelve! The clock has stopped!" I looked at my watch. It was {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(正确的). The big clock refused to welcome the New Year. At that moment, everybody began to laugh and sing. They {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(表达)their best wishes to each other.

People are spending much money buying mystery boxes (盲盒) these days. Usually, there are toys in mystery boxes, but now shops are putting food in them. They are "leftover mystery boxes". 

They are more and more popular in China's cities, such as Beijing, Nanjing and Chengdu. The food inside is near its expiration date (保质期) and will be thrown away if no one buys it. 

Each box costs little money but has a lot of food inside. I buy leftover mystery boxes from an app called Too Good To Go. Each box costs about 3 to 5 pounds (27 to 45 yuan), and there are usually three to four things inside. For example, a box I buy from the coffee shop has three kinds of bread and one cake. The box costs 3 pounds but the original price (原价) is around 10 pounds. Every time I buy a mystery box, I feel happier thinking about how much money I can save. Wasting less food is also good for the environment. 

But the boxes also bring me problems. Because I can't choose what's in the box, sometimes I get the same kind of food. Also, the food may not be nutritious (有营养的) enough. I have to make other dishes, such as a salad, to make the meal healthier. 

 One day, a successful businessman was getting ready to go to his office in the morning. When he opened the door of his car, a stray dog(流浪狗) sleeping under his car1 came out and bit his leg! He was angry and 2 a rock at the dog, but he was not able to hit it.

When he 3 his office, the businessman called a meeting of his managers. During the meeting, he took out his 4 on his managers. His managers were upset about this, and took out their own anger on the employees(员工) working under them.5 , the businessman's anger spread through the whole company.

 The businessman was still angry after returning home. His wife opened the door. She asked him, "6 are you so late today?" The man7 his wife, "I didn' t go to the office to play soccer,I went to work. So don't ask me such stupid questions!" His wife was upset about being shouted at for no 8 . She turned her anger on their son, who was watching TV. "This is all you do. You have no 9 in studying! Turn off the TV now!" She yelled.(大喊).

 The son became upset as well. He walked out of his house and saw a dog passing by. He picked up a rock and threw it at the dog angrily. The dog ran away, barking in 10 .

 Sometimes, when we are angry about something, we might take out our anger on others who are not to blame(责备) for our mood. This is not fair to others. We should learn to control our anger.
