On 18th November.1908, three men went up in a balloon (气球).They started early in London. The headman was Augusta Gaudron, and the other two men were Tannar and Maitland. They had a big balloon and they were ready for a long way.

Soon they heard the sea. They were carrying the usual rope, and it was hanging down from the basket of the balloon. At the end of the rope they had tied a metal box. This could hold water, or it could be empty. So they were able to change its weight. It was for use over the sea. They were also carrying some bags of sand.

After the sun rose, the balloon went higher. It went up to 3,000 metres, and the air was very cold. The water in the balloon became ice. Snow fell past the men's basket, and they could see more snow on the ground. The men tried to throw out some more sand, but it was hard. They tried to break the icy sand with their knives, but it was not easy. The work was slow and they were still falling, so they had to drop some whole bags of sand. One of them fell on an icy lake and made a black hole in the ice.

At last they pulled the box into the basket. It was still snowing, so they climbed to get away from the snow. They rose to 5,100 metres! Everything became icy. They were so cold that they decided to land. They came down in Poland heavily but safely. They had travelled 1,797kilometres from London!

Most people have heard of the Great Wall of China, but not many people outside of China know about the Grand Canal(大运河).This manmade waterway, known in China as Da Yunhe, is 1，700 kilometres long and some parts of it are more than 2，000 years old.It links(连接) the north of China with Hangzhou, a city in the southern part of the country.It's the longest manmade waterway in the world.

 It was built as a way to transport food from the rich land in China's south to cities in the north.In fact, it's not one canal, but a system of canals and rivers linked together.

It's still an important part of the transport system in China.Thousands of boats use it every day to transport food and many other kinds of things.

China is now doing new work on the Grand Canal.It is making part of it deeper, so bigger ships can pass.The canal will also help to move water.There is a lot of rain in the south of China, but not so much in the north.The canal will carry lots of water from the south to the north.

The Grand Canal is much less famous than the Great Wall, and not very many visitors know it.But it sees the changes in Chinese history.It's possible to go on a trip along some of the oldest parts of the canal.Visitors can see beautiful parts of China that others don't see.

How long is Da Yunhe?

Basketball is an active and much-loved sport that is enjoyed by many people for fun and exercise. So far, the "Village Basketball Association" at Taipan Village in Guizhou has got tons of attention. The final game of the Guizhou country basketball league, known as "Village BA" took place on March 

27. The winner was Team Qiangongnan and prizes for the team with bags of rice, fish and ducks. Most of the players are farmers from local villages and nearby cities. People even can't get a single seat because more than 30 000 people from across the country come to the small village to watch the game. People knocked on iron pots and bowls to cheer for players . Villagers sang folk songs and danced in the halftime show.

Taipan has now been a model place of rural vitalization(乡村振兴)in sports and tourism(旅游业). In the summer of 2022, about 500,000 visitors came here to watch "Village BA" game and it brought great benefits to the village. Zeng Jinlong, a 17-year-old villager, has watched the games for the first time when he was 6 years old. He said, "I dream of taking part in the ‘Village BA' final one day."

A beautiful woman entered the plane and looked around in search of her seat. She found her seat next to a man who had no hands. She called an air hostess(女乘务员) and said unhappily, "I won't be able to travel comfortably in this seat. I want to change my seat."

The air hostess was shocked to hear this from a woman who appeared to be beautiful. She looked around for vacant seats but didn't find any. She told the woman, "There's no vacant seat in this economy class(经济舱), but it's our responsibility(责任) to take care of our passengers. I' ll go to discuss this with our leader. Please wait for a while."

 After some time, the air hostess came back to the woman and said, "I'm very sorry for the trouble caused for you. On this plane, only one seat is vacant and it's in the business class. I discussed it with the leader and we have made a great decision—a person from this economy class will be allowed to travel in the business class."

 The woman was very excited. But before she could say something, the air hostess moved towards the man and asked him, "Sir, will you please go to the business class? We don't want you to feel uncomfortable traveling with an impolite passenger." Hearing this some passengers welcomed this decision by clapping(鼓掌).

"What a shame!" The woman thought to herself.
