With only one yuan, could you live in a city for one day? It may sound impossible.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

On April 10th, more than 60 students from a middle school took part in the One Yuan Metropolis Survival(一元城市生存). A charity organization(慈善组织) for teenagers held this activity.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} And it is going to four others, including Beijing.

In the activity, students had to live and deal with difficult tasks. To make money, many students looked for part-time jobs and saw how hard life was. A 14-year-old girl asked more than 10 restaurants for a job and finally got one. "{#blank#}3{#/blank#} But gradually, we got used to it," she said. After being a waiter for an hour, she got 25 yuan.

Living was hard, but finishing the tasks wasn't any easier. The students went to different places to finish tasks in a short time. The most amazing one was when they had to exchange things worth a thousand yuan with only a piece of paper in half an hour. "{#blank#}4{#/blank#} From a balloon to a cake to a bottle of yogurt...after almost 20 tries, we got an expensive ring," a student said. "We will give all of the money we have raised to poor schools in Tibet."

Joe Campbell is 7 years old. He has three sisters and no brothers. His father often takes him to play sports on Saturdays and Sundays. But Joe doesn't t think that is interesting.

All of Joe's sisters take ballet classes on the weekend. And Joe is also interested in dancing. He wants to go to learn ballet with his sisters. But his father thinks he is joking(开玩笑). "You know, you should go to join a football or basketball club," his father says. This makes Joe sad because his father doesn't allow him to do what he wants to.

When Joe's sisters see it, they want to help him, Every night, they teach Joe how to dance. At the school music festival, Joe dances with his sisters, and they live a wonderful performance(表演). His father watches it and he is proud of(为……骄傲)them. He knows Joe is doing the right thing.

2024r is the 21st year of a free library in a mountain village in Shaoyang, Hunan Province 77-year-old Yang Guangxun started the "Ziqiang Library". 

Yang was born in this village and become a book lover when he was very young. He owned over 300 books at home. When he retired in 2002, he and his wife sometimes went back to the village for they didn't need to work any longer. Learning village children often had trouble finding enough books to work, Yang decided to give away all his books to start the library in August 2003. He hoped everyone in the village will make their lives rich through reading.

Over the past 21 years, Yang has given away plenty of money to buy more books for the library. With 6 reding rooms, it now stores over 54,000 books and has 30,000 visitors every year. Since Yang and his wife don't always live in the village, they invite relatives and friends to work as volunteers and take care of the library. There are 16 volunteers working in the library all year round as the library is open every day, from 9:00 a. m. to 6:00 p. m.

Thanks to the library, many villagers fall in love with reading, and many students get great grades or get into universities. They all think reading is the best thing in the world.

An interview with Andy Griffiths

Andy Griffiths is well known as a writer of children's books. Here are some interesting things you might not know about him !

I go for long runs and bike rides beside the beach. An hour of exercise after a long day of writing gives me energy. Then I'm ready to write some more.

At first I write the stories by hand, and then I transfer (转录）them onto a computer. I like to write by hand when I travel. I find it very easy to lose myself in my diary when I am away from my usual activities.

I'm never happier than I'm thinking banana milk shakes. And I love fish. But I don't like drinking fish milk shakes. They are just terrible !

What is your favorite book ?

Alice in Wonderland. It has so many surprises and such silliness in it.

Only if I really have to. I much prefer the freedom and fun of writing for children.

One day a little boy asked his father, "What does the word ‘great' mean? Who are great people and 1 do they become great? "

The father asked his son to bring two plants and then told him to plant one of them 2 the house and the other outside the house. The boy did as his father said.

The father asked his son, "Which one of the two plants do you think will be  3  and bigger? " The boy replied, "The plant inside the house will be safer,  4  it will grow bigger, while the plant outside the house is not safe at all. No one will be there to  5 it. It may be eaten by animals."

The father smiled and said, "Let's wait  6 .We will know the answer."

Then the boy  7  for study and after four years he came back to his house. He said to his father, "Look, 8 happens to this plant inside the house and it is safe."

When the boy went outside, he was very  9  to see a big tree. The boy couldn't believe his eyes. He couldn't  10 how the plant outside was able to grow much bigger than the plant inside the house.

"The plant outside the house faced four  11  and many difficulties!" the father  12  to his son why the plant outside was bigger. "The plant inside was safe, it didn't face weather changes, and it didn't get proper  13 , so it didn't become big."

When I was a child, my father was always{#blank#}1{#/blank#} . But when I grew up, he became{#blank#}2{#/blank#} than before. I have spent much time in the hospital with him {#blank#}3{#/blank#} last year. Recently, he has had a toothache all the time. This {#blank#}4{#/blank#} made him thinner. I hope my father will get better soon.
