58-year-old Zhang Xiping , a build farmer, was chosen to be one of the 2022 Chinese Filial Piety figures (中华慈孝人物) during the 8th Chinese Filial Piety Cultural Festival held in Hangzhou.

Zhang was born in 1964 in a small village in Shanxi province. His father passed away early and it was hard for his mother to raise him by herself. He wanted to make big money so that his mother could live comfortably. In 1984, Zhang heard sister in-law was raising chickens and selling eggs, so he decided to learn and do it himself.

Every night, he spends about three hours picking eggs for sale, putting each one carefully on top of another inside two baskets. And every morning, he wakes up at 5 o'clock, carries the two baskets weighing over 90 kilograms, and goes to a market street over 30 kilometers away from home. He walks more than 30,000 steps and passes by hundreds of streets per day.

For the past 38 years , he has been raising chickens and selling eggs to support____ his adopted (领养) daughter and now 87-year-old mother. Through his efforts, he has made a good living and even built a new house for his family to live in.

Although his physical disability has made him experience more difficulties in life than normal people, Zhang feels kindness from those around him. " As a disable person, I don't have much to give back to others. When I die, I will donate(捐献) my body to the hospital for scientific research," said Zhang.

The lion dance, a form of traditional dance in China, can date back to the Three Kingdom Period (220—280). It was very popular during the Tang Dynasty (618—907). The lions looked powerful and a little scary. Chinese people believe that lions can drive away bad luck and bring good luck. Many also think that the animal is a symbol (象征) of China. That's why lots of people, including overseas Chinese, love this dance so much. 

There are different lion dances in different places. It's called Xingshi in Guangdong. In 2006, Xingshi was added to China's list of national intangible cultural heritage (国家级非物质文化遗产). 

Wang Rentao has been performing the lion dance for 28 years. He is now head of a lion dance team in Guangdong. Last year, the team took part in the celebration of the 74th birthday of New China at Tian'anmen Square. It is famous for dancing on quincuncial piles (梅花桩), one of the most difficult lion dance skills. Dancers jump from one pile to another at a height of about 2.5 meters. The piles are l.8 meters away from each other. "The training is really hard. All dancers can play Kung Fu. Even with that, they may fall from the pile and get hurt," Wang said. "It can take many years to learn the skill. But that's also the amazing part of lion dance, the part that makes it valuable heritage."

Now students can learn lion dance in school. This helps students know more about the rich cultural traditions of China and feel proud of their heritage.

The19-year-oldgirl Peng Xiyue, like most girls of her age, enjoys sports like running and swimming. No one knows she has intellectual disability(智力残疾) if people just meet her for the first time.

 Peng was shy and easy to get angry before. She has changed a lot after going to a special education school. She has got training(训练) in the school for 6 years and won first place at the Special Olympic Games(特殊奥林匹克运动会) many times. She also learns about Chinese tea culture(文化) and other helpful skills there. She tells her father that she wants to work as a waitress in a restaurant to make a living(谋生) by herself after she finishes her studies in

2024. Her father is glad to hear that. He believes Peng will have no problem living a good life in the future.

 There are many children like Peng in the school. The school gives them training to help them keep healthy and get some important social skills for their future. Every weekend, volunteers go to the school to help the children exercise. Dong Ruixue, one of the volunteers, thinks people with disabilities are just a little different from others. "They need to beloved, "Dong says. And some college students choose to return to the school to work as teachers when they finish their studies. Wang Furong is one of them. She says working there is different from volunteer work(志愿活动) and she needs to have more skills.

 Now China has more than 85million people with disabilities. "We give different kinds of lessons to help them get jobs in the future. And I'm glad that some companies are willing to offer jobs to them,"says Bian Rong; the school's headteacher.
