Haili Smith, 16, says she and her sister, Brooke, "have very different tastes in books." Haili likes horror stories. Brooke, 13, prefers fantasy. What they share is the belief that kids are more likely to read if they are connected with a book's characters. That's why, in 2020, they started Books Like Me. The nonprofit group donates (捐赠) culturally different children's books to schools.

"We didn't really like reading a few years ago", Haili told TIME for Kids. "[Then] we started to look for books that had characters we saw ourselves in. It made us want to read more. We thought we could share that with students, because we knew that this wasn't something that changed us only."

Haili and Brooke started with an Amazon Wish List of books they liked. They shared the list on social media, asking for donations of these titles. Soon, they began receiving boxes of new books to give away to schools. As word about their organization has spread, requests have come in from schools nationwide. So far, Haili and Brooke have given away more than 16, 000 books.

Anitra Carter teaches fourth grade at a primary school in Florida. She says donations from Books Like Me have gotten her students more interested in reading. "It excites them when seeing a character that may represent (代表；象征) them or look similar to them," Carter says.

Over the years, Haili and Brooke have been invited to speak with educators about the importance of culturally diverse books. They've also taken books directly to students. At a book fair in Florida, "I was at a table showing kids the books and they were picking them out," Haili recalls. "They all looked so happy when they found a book that really resonated (共鸣) with them."

That, of course, is the goal. "I hope, and I think," Haili says, "that all kids should ____ so that they enjoy reading."

When I was a young teacher, my first teaching job was in a village in the far north of Canada. There were no roads. You had to take a 1  to fly into the village. I was quite 2 about this new job. I couldn't sleep well. But I packed( 打包) my bags and headed north for my adventure.

In autumn, when I 3 there, the weather was fine. The 4 shone and the days were clear. But all of that was soon to change. In late October, the season changed suddenly. One morning, I awoke and it was winter. In winter, it is very 5 in Canada's north. It snows a lot, too. One winter day, it started to snow really, really6 . The wind blew. And the snow did not stop. It snowed for a whole day. It snowed all night, too.

On the morning of the third day, the snow finally stopped coming down. I7 and looked out of my window. The students looked out of their windows too. They could not see their school."Our school has disappeared( 消失)." they cried. All they could see was a world8 white snow everywhere. The snow covered the school completely. It was more than 8 metres high. It was amazing! But not everyone was surprised. "It happens every year," said the school principal(校长)，"This is Canada. This is how we get to school in the far north."

Of course, there was no school that day. The people in the village came and helped the guard dig out the snow. It9 three days to uncover the school! The kids enjoyed their days off. But they were glad to get back to10 finally.

Xian Xinghai was a very famous musician in China. He wrote one of 1 pieces of music of the 20th century. In his short life, he wrote nearly 300 songs and 2 opera. 

Xian was born in Panyu, Guangdong, China in 1905. His father died before he was born, Xian moved from place 3 place with his mother. He began learning 4 the violin when he was 20 years old. In the beginning, his violin was very old and cheap. So he 5 play it well. His friends laughed at him. Xian did not stop 6 and soon showed his talent. In 1934, he studied in a special music school in Paris. He was one of the first Chinese students to go there. Before he left, Xian became the school's best student and won several prizes for his talents. 

In 1935, he 7 to China and helped fight against the Japanese army. 8 , he came to Yan'an to teach music at a college. 9 there were no pianos in Yan'an at that time, Xian still wrote some of his most important music there. 

In May 1940, the Chinese Communist Party sent Xian to the Soviet Union to write music for movies. In the Soviet Union, life was very hard. Xian got sick and died on 30th October, 1945, aged only 40. However, he gave 10 the wonderful music. And we will remember Xian. 

Our English classes are always interesting. Mr Chen told us to {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (讨论) great books and write a book review of our favourite one this morning. I {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (猜想) many students will take The Adventures of Tom Sawyer as their favourite book. This book describes how people lived in the {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(南方的) states of America. The conversations in the book sound especially real because they are all in {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(日常的) English. 

Tom, the hero of the book, is a poor boy. Tom and his best friend decide to {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(逃脱) to an island. But a bad man is looking for him. Later, Tom and another friend run away from a {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (洞穴). Not seeing them for a long time, people think they are{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (死 的 ). Then, they suddenly appear at their funeral. People are {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(惊讶的) to see them at first, but very pleased to find they are still {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(活着的). 

Its writer Mark Twain is my favourite{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (外国的) writer. He is a well- known writer. 

Last night, when I was preparing for my English exam in my bedroom, I suddenly heard a loud noise. The glass on the edge (边缘) of the desk {#blank#}1{#/blank#} onto the floor. The glass was {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. The light in the room was shaking. I looked out of the window and found the whole building was shaking too. I realized (意识到) that a(n) {#blank#}3{#/blank#} had happened. I{#blank#}4{#/blank#} myself that I must be brave and stay calm and try not to cry. I crawled (爬) and hid myself under the bed. Several minutes later, the building didn't shake any more. So I crawled out and ran out of the building as quickly as I could. Or I couldn't {#blank#}5{#/blank#} what would happen. What a terrible experience!

One morning, Jackie is riding his bike home. He sees his friend, Ms Weasel. She is sad. Her bike has a flat tire (爆胎) but she must go to work now. 

Jackie says, "Ms Weasel, you can use my bike first. Tammy will help fix your bike. "

"Thank you so much!" Ms Weasel says. 

"Sharing is caring!" Jackie smiles. Then he walks home:

When Jackie gets home, he finds a big hole (洞) in his trousers. Oh no! He only has one pair of blue trousers!

"Don't worry!" Tammy comes, "I have many trousers. You can wear mine. " That makes Jackie happy. 

"Sharing is caring. " Tammy says happily. 

Jackie then goes into the kitchen to make beef soup for dinner. Tammy comes with some vegetables. "Wow! What delicious beef soup!" she says. 

"Let's have it together" Jackie says. "Sharing is caring!"

Then someone is at the door. It is Ms Weasel"Thank you for your bike today, Jackie. I have a gift for you!"

"Wow! Honey cake! Our favorite!" Tammy says. 

"We just made beef soup. Let's have dinner together. " Jackie says. 

"Thank you!" Ms Weasel sits down, "Sharing is caring!"
