Mary was ill yesterday. She went to see a doctor.

    "Doctor, I'm not feeling 1 at the moment," she said. "Every time I do my homework at night, I feel 2. If I walk to school, I have to sit down and 3  for ten minutes."

    The doctor looked 4 Mary carefully. At last he said, "5 serious, but I'm afraid you are 6 too much."

    "I don't understand. What do you mean?" asked Mary. "I mean you eat too much 7 ,"said the doctor.

    "Oh! You mean I'm too 8. That's a problem," said Mary. "What should I do if I don't want to be heavy?"

    "The answer is easy," said the doctor. "If you want to be thinner and healthier, you 9 eat a lot of food and you also should take more 10."

As a child，I was a quite active boy. I was running around and getting hurt almost every day. My mom was worried. A neighbor advised me to learn to fish. I liked the idea，but my mom said no. A few years ago，I was kept away from any body of water!

At last，my mom wanted me to read books. Every day，she made me sit on a chair and read for an hour. As a boy，my uncle，a teacher，just put it down and pick another one，" he said. 

I started off with The Enormous Crocodile（《巨大的鳄鱼》）. After twenty pages. I was lying on the floor and laughing. This crocodile wants to eat children for a change，so he makes himself lock like a seesaw（跷跷板），I read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Both stories were exciting and easy to understand. 

As time went on，I started reading longer and more serious books. I was in the middle of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn when my mom said I should spend more time playing outside. But the book was too interesting to put down. To this day，I make time to read every day. 

If you haven't yet experienced the fun of reading，take my uncle's advice and find the "Right" books. They'll give you enjoyment，teach you something new, and even change your life.

Only half of the class handed in their homework one day. The teacher got an idea while he was giving his students a lesson about weight. He walked around the classroom while holding a glass of water up in the air. He asked his students, "How heavy is this glass of water?"

The students started to shout out their answers. 

"The weight of this glass isn't hard to find out, " the teacher said. "The problem is how long I'm holding it. If I hold it for two minutes, it doesn't feel like much of a problem. If I hold it for an hour, it might feel heavier as my arm begins to tire. If I hold it for a day or a week, my arm will hurt. It'll feel painful. I will be unable to think about anything but the pain that I'm in. In all of these situations, the actual weight of the glass will be the same. But the longer I hold onto it, the heavier it feels to me and the harder it is to hold it. "

"Your homework is like this glass of water, by the way, " the teacher said. The class then understood. 

①Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do, Her name was Mrs. White. 

②I don't remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many mistakes. But no red corrections. And always a star. Sometimes even a Good! That worried my mother a lot, so one day she asked Mrs. White why she never corrected my mis- takes; in spellings of words or pointed out grammatical errors. 

③Mrs. White said, "The children are just beginning to get excited about using words, about forming sentences. I don't want to dampen that interest with red ink. Spelling and grammar can wait. . . "

④She is right! I did grow up learning to use words with loving confidence just like that. I look back now and think she must have been a rather extraordinary teacher— to restrain(限制) her red pen— to allow the joy, wonder and excitement of expression. 

⑤I used to misspell"beautiful" a lot. I never could quite remember that the"e" went before the"a". It annoyed my teacher in high school endlessly. Eventually the"e" and"a" settled into their right places. I am glad I didn't wait on them though. "Pretty" is easier to spell but it doesn't hold as much as you mean sometimes. 

⑥And thanks to Mrs. White I had no concerns about writing what I meant, even if I couldn't quite spell it out. After all, life isn't pretty. It's beautiful.
