Last year, I went to a summer camp in the United States with my classmates. It was my first time to go abroad.

    I lived with a host family in Los Angeles for five days. My host family was friendly and gave me lots of advice. For example, they said I should say "excuse me" if I have to interrupt (打断) someone or ask for directions.

    I also took some classes. They were different from the classes I had had back home. In the US, each class is like a seminar. Students join groups, speaking freely and creating a cheerful atmosphere (氛围). I had to work hard to learn more vocabularies, so I could better communicate with my international classmates. I used to pay little attention to my word usage (使用), but now I pay more attention.

    During my visit, I also went to some famous universities in Boston, New York and Washington, D. C. We learned about the history behind the universities. At MIT (麻省理工学院), we saw lots of names on a wall in the hall. The tour guide told us they were the names of students who had lost their lives during wars. I was inspired (鼓舞) by the fact that they fought for their country.

My favorite animals are monkeys (猴子). I like them{#blank#}1{#/blank#} they are smart. Here are some new {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (photo) of monkeys in my phone. They make me happy when I see them. 

There is a monkey festival in my hometown. "Where are you {#blank#}3{#/blank#}?" you may ask. I'm from Lopburi. The festival is important to {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (we). It is usually on {#blank#}5{#/blank#} last Sunday of November. You can see all {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (kind) of foods on the big tables. The food tastes {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (good). It's all for monkeys. The monkeys sometimes fight for food. That {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(sound) funny, right? The monkey festival attracts (吸引) many people every year. People can watch some {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(interest)shows, too. The performers (表演者) wear beautiful clothes. I always have much {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (fun) at the festival. 

I walked into a class full of strangers for the first time and wanted to be invisible (看不见的). That's how I{#blank#}1{#/blank#}on my first day at school in Mexico. The teacher was {#blank#}2{#/blank#}the rest of the class all about me, but I didn't understand much of what she was saying. I spoke very little Spanish, so I only {#blank#}3{#/blank#}when she said my name and age. Some of the children smiled and waved, but others{#blank#}4{#/blank#}at me and whispered (小声说) to each other. After what seemed like hours, I took my seat. When a girl leaned over and said, "Hola, soy Ines.", I smiled at her and tried to {#blank#}5{#/blank#}what my Spanish teacher taught me, and after a moment's pause I said, "Hola, soy Isabel."

I really like Peking Opera because it makes me feel peaceful and happy. When I was 8 years old, I saw Peking Opera actresses dancing with flowing sleeves and s{#blank#}1{#/blank#} in a graceful (优雅的) way on television. I told my mom that I wanted to learn Peking Opera, and she put me in classes. Since then I've been on my learning j{#blank#}2{#/blank#} for 5 years.

I have to wake up at 6 o'clock every morning to practice the key skills in Peking Opera performance, such as leg exercises, somersaults (翻筋斗), and voice t{#blank#}3{#/blank#}. When practicing handstands (倒立), all the w{#blank#}4{#/blank#} is on my arms and I sweat. And to make my p{#blank#}5{#/blank#} more clear, I read the lines loudly and quickly. It makes my lips numb (麻木的), but I don't give up. In practice, what really w{#blank#}6{#/blank#} me is getting hurt. One time, I fell down while practicing. That made it d{#blank#}7{#/blank#} for me to go up and down stairs for a long time.

As the saying goes, "One minute on the stage needs 10 years' practice o{#blank#}8{#/blank#} the stage." All the hard work was worth it o{#blank#}9{#/blank#} I got the chance to perform Peking Opera onstage. In 2020, I took part in King Cross (《跨界歌王》) on Beijing TV and performed Ode to Pear a part from The Drunken Beauty (《贵妃醉酒》) during a show on CCTV. Peking Opera puts t{#blank#}10{#/blank#} different parts of theater like writing, music, painting, and costumes. The charm of Peking Opera is timeless. I hope Peking Opera will be loved and enjoyed by more young people.

I have two good friends. They are Peter and Gina. They are in the s {#blank#}1{#/blank#} class. They both like Chinese very much. Here {#blank#}2{#/blank#}( be) two photos. One is a photo of Peter's f {#blank#}3{#/blank#} and the other is  a photo of a bedroom. In the {#blank#}4{#/blank#}( one) photo you can see four people(人). They are Peter's parents, Peter and his sister. Peter's father and mother are t {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. They work(工作) in a middle school. Can you s {#blank#}6{#/blank#} the boy on the bed? He's Peter. A red hat is on his h {#blank#}7{#/blank#}. Who is the girl? Oh, she is Peter's sister. Her name is Nancy. In the next photo, you can see their {#blank#}8{#/blank#}( parent) bedroom. A blue desk,a yellow chair,a green bookcase and a white bed are {#blank#}9{#/blank#} it. A computer and some CDs are on the desk. A red bag is on the chair. Some English- Chinese d {#blank#}10{#/blank#} are in the bookcase. The room is tidy and clean.

For his eleventh birthday, Tom was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children's Activity Centre and said he could choose any course（课程） that interested him. There was just one requirement (要求): Tom would have to promise（承诺） to study it for at least one year.

Tom had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Tom's artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Tom's parents would let him decide.

Tom's eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed (列出) all the courses on offer. He stopped at "Photography". He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Tom's family weren't poor, they weren't rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking.

The next course to catch his eye was "Language Art". He didn't even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches（演讲）. Tom, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse. Then he saw "cooking", which sounded like something he'd like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient(方便的). It could be done alone and it was also creative.

Based on（基于） Tom's hobby history, his dad had doubts (怀疑), but he agreed. Much to his parents' surprise, he practiced at home and made delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Tom got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others.

The months turned to years but his hobby never changed again. Now Tom is an adult and runs a successful restaurant. When customers（顾客） say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he received all those years ago.
