Do you know Tuvalu? It is one of the smallest countries in the world. It is difficult to find fresh water(淡水) in the country, so people can't grow plants or vegetables there. They need to pay much money for fresh vegetables from other countries.

However, the sea around Tuvalu is cleaner than any other part of the world, because there are not any large factories(工厂) in the country. This beautiful country with clean sea makes lots of people from other countries travel there.

Tuvalu will face another problem, because the sea level(海平面) may soon become higher than the land of Tuvalu. If that happens, Tuvalu will show up only on old maps in the future. Most of the people in Tuvalu worry about this, but they can't do anything to stop this from happening, and many people are leaving Tuvalu for other countries.

What's more, there is only one senior high school in Tuvalu. It is truly difficult for students to learn useful things in the school. After people move away from Tuvalu, they can't find good jobs because they can only grow fruit, catch fish and clean houses. For people still living in Tuvalu, maybe they can look on the good side(往好的方面看) and try to do something to stop the sea level growing.

Mother's Day is coming. It is a time to let your mother know she's special to you. Let's see the history of Mother's Day in different countries.

Long, long ago, in Greece, people celebrated a mid­March day. On that day they showed admiration to Rhea. Rhea was the Mother of the Gods.

Later, English people had their own "Mothering Sunday". It was the 4th Sunday of Lent(四月斋)before the Easter Eve. People usually bought a fruit cake as a gift to Mom. Today English people still celebrate the holiday on the 4th Sunday of Lent.

In America, Mother's Day is a national holiday today. People first celebrated it in 1908 in just one state in the United States. It was all because of Anna M. Jarvis's hard work. She wrote so many letters to important people of that time because she wanted to have a day to show love and admiration to mothers. In 1914，the American President Woodrow Wilson made the second Sunday in May Mother's Day.

Most people want to work, but it has become more difficult in today's world to find work for everyone. The economy of the world needs to grow by 4% each year just to keep the old number of jobs for people. Often this is not possible, and so more people are out of work. Some people have no jobs now because new machines can do the work of many people in short time. Also, machines do not ask for more money and longer holidays. In all the countries of the world, machines are taking work from people, not only in factories but also on the farms. One machine can often do the work of forty people. About 75,000 people are moving to the cities a day to look for jobs, but only 70% of them can find jobs.

Cats or Dogs? Both cats and dogs are popular pets. Most families, however, can keep only one pet. It can be hard to decide whether to take a cat or a dog into your home. Here, some middle school students are having a cats VS. dogs debate（辩论）.

We think cats are better for most families. Many people want to keep a pet, but they live a busy life. Cats don't have to be taken outside to use the bathroom. Instead, they just use a litter box. Their owners only need to keep the litter box clean. They don't need to worry if they are away at work for most of the day. They never have to run home from work early in order to walk their pet.

No, dogs are better. Just think about why you want to keep a pet. Dogs can bring you lots of happiness. When you go back home from school or work, your dog will always greet you at the door with excitement. Cats... huh... When you walk into the room, never expect your cat to be too excited about seeing you. What's the point in keeping such a pet？

Well, cats seem to have their own timetables, but when they do look for love, they will do their best. Moreover, cats usually live longer than dogs. Most cats can live up to 15 years while most dogs only have 13 years on the planet. Isn't it nice to be able to spend more time with your pet?

But dogs are more faithful. A dog never leaves its owner no matter what happens. Dogs also keep you safe. If a bad guy tries to break into your home, your dog will drive him away with loud barks.

Yeah, dogs make so much noise! Some dogs bark at almost every stranger, but are there so many bad guys? Cats, however, are quiet most of the time.

Dogs can be trained well. Cats have claws(爪子)and they are interested in everything. They can cause much more trouble!

In my three years of junior high school, I played soccer, basketball, and baseball. I love sports and really enjoy being part of a team. Playing on our school sports teams is the best part of my school life. I think I'm very lucky to have this chance. 

In fact, many students who love sports don't have the chance to play on a school team. That's because, to join a team, you have to try out. And you should do well in tryouts (选拔赛). Some students may be ill that day, or nervous (紧张的), or are just having a bad day, so they don't play their best and can't join a team. That is too bad. 

Also, some students really don't have the skills to play well. They never join a team, and that isn't fair (公平的). But remember, this is school and students are here to learn. All students should have the chance to learn sports skills and teamwork by playing on a school sports team. 

Sports are important for good health. They help students feel good about themselves and their school. They meet and become friends in the teams. Players have fun playing, and their parents have fun watching and cheering for the team. So, sports bring students and parents together, too. These teams are just for fun, so if possible, let's give every student a chance to play on the school sports team. 

Do you know why you get angry so easily, but your friend smiles all the time? It's because you both have different personalities. Then what is personality? It's about how people think, behave and react to everything around them. 

So what makes people think and behave in certain ways? Part of the reason is that people are born like this. A baby gets its genes and blood type when it is still inside its mother. These may help decide what the baby will be like. 

But one's personality doesn't stop here. Family life, school learning and life experiences can also make you the person you are. But this doesn't mean you can't change your personality. You can always try to make yourself better. Don't get too worried if you don't have a good personality.     ★      This is a good way to start making changes. 

For example, if you don't know how to make friends, find out why. Is it because you're too shy? If so, tell yourself to smile at people. Start talking to people kindly. But don't give yourself a hard time about it all. After all, it's not easy to change lifelong habits in one night. Just keep trying, One day you can see that you can turn over a new leaf and be a new you!
