Here are the New Year's resolutions of my four friends.

My name is Dave and I am from the United Kingdom. I'm going to drink more water and less cola. I'm also going to brush my teeth before breakfast and after dinner, and wash my hands before eating.

My name is Tina and I am from the United States. I want to make more friends this year. I'm going to be nicer to the other children in my class. I'm going to be friendly to children who need friends－like someone who is shy or new to my school.

I'm Selina and I am from the United States. I'm going to work harder this year. I'm going to do all the homework that our teachers ask us to do. If I have any problems with my subjects, I'm going to ask my teachers for help.

My name is Toby and I am from Singapore. I'm never going to play computer games. When I feel angry or stressed, I'm going to find better ways to relax, like exercising, reading or discussing my problems with my friends.

①Why do we do the things we do? What drives our behavior? Researchers have suggested different ways of thinking about motivation (动机), including looking at whether motivation comes from outside or inside a person.

②Extrinsic(外来的) motivation is when you decide to do something because you want to get a reward or avoid punishment. Intrinsic (内在的) motivation is when you do something because you find it enjoyable. The behavior itself is its own reward.

③There are many advantages of intrinsi c motivation. Firstly, it's lasting. It makes people willing to face challenges and work hard to achieve their goals. Besides, people with intrinsic motivation have a greater sense of satisfaction.

④Most people think intrinsic motivation is best, but it is not always possible in every situation. Sometimes a person has an unpleasant task and he may not have internal(内部的) wish to complete it. That's when we need extrinsic motivation. But studies have shown that offering too many external (外部的) reward can reduce intrinsic motivation. For example, in a study, they became less interested in the toys.

⑤Both extrinsic and intrinsic motivation play a key role in learning. Experts have argued that traditional education pays too much attention to external rewards, such as grades. This undermines the intrinsic motivation that students might already have. However, others have suggested that extrinsic motivation can help students feel more knowledgeable in class. It helps to build up their intrinsic motivation. 

⑥Understanding how each type of motivation works and when it is likely to be useful can help people complete tasks and improve their learning.

I am John Brown. I have a happy family. There are (有) nine people in my family. They are my grandparents, my parents, my two sisters, my brother, his wife(妻子) and I. In England, it is very big.

 My grandparents are old and they like planting flowers(种花) in the garden every day. My father is a farmer and he has a farm. It is very big. My mother doesn't go to work. What does she do at home? Can you guess? Oh, she does housework. She is a housewife(家庭主妇).

 My brother is a doctor. He works in a hospital. His wife works in a hospital, too. But she is a nurse. My two sisters are students. Helen wants to be an English teacher. Her English is very good. Julia likes to sing very much. She can sing very well. So she wants to be a singer(歌手). I'm in China now. I teach English in a high school.

We are happy to say that there's a trip to Apple Farm for all the children in Class 2. The trip is on Wednesday. On this trip, your children learn about farm life and have great fun in the open air.

There are lots of animals on the farm. In the morning, the children can feed the hens and the ducks. They can also see the cows, horses, and sheep. Then the farmer, Mr. James, teaches the children about life on the farm and about where food comes from. In the afternoon, at about 2 o'clock, the children can also ride in his big tractor（拖拉机）. This is always very popular.

We are traveling by school bus. The bus goes at 9 o'clock, so please don't be late. Please bring lunch boxes and drinks. Also bring boots, as the farm can be muddy（泥泞的）! It's also sunny at the farm, so bring a sun hat, too. We will be back to school at about 4:00 p. m.

① Is it common to see grass on the way to school every day? Is grass so common that you probably don't even notice it? Do you take the grass for granted? Do you know that there is also some special grass that grows on the ocean floor? The Seagrass, an underwater plant that grows on the ocean floor, is not only very important for sea life but also helps prevent global warming. However, scientists and researchers don't know exactly how much seagrass is at the bottom of the ocean. With the help of tiger sharks, a team of researchers has discovered the world's largest seagrass meadow( grassland) on the seafloor near the Bahamas.

② Seagrass meadows are home to fish, shellfish, and so on. Large sea animals, such as sharks, also spend a lot of time there looking for food. Seagrass can grow in very deep and dark waters, making it difficult for people to find. But sharks can dive deep into the water and get to the areas people cannot reach.

③ After noticing tiger sharks swimming through seagrass off the Bahamas, an American scientist worked with a seagrass expert, trying to map the locations of those hard-to-find plants. The researchers fitted seven tiger sharks with cameras. Since tiger sharks swim in groups, they placed tracking tags(跟踪器) on eight other sharks to find out exactly where the animals swam. They collected hours of videos of the tiger sharks swimming through seagrass.

④ The researchers found more seagrass near the Bahamas than they expected - - - in fact, they believe that there is more seagrass(41%) than anywhere else on Earth. Researchers and scientists were very happy about this finding. However, more research is needed to discover the true size of the seagrass meadow.

⑤ In order to study about the underwater world, scientists often depend on divers and boats, but this team found that working with animals improved their understanding. They are now placing cameras on sea turtles to study seagrass in the Red Sea. Hopefully, more mysteries about seagrass will be solved.
