No one knows exactly when jazz was invented, or by whom. But it is said that it began in the early 1900s. Jazz was a new kind of music, for America and the world, and New Orleans was {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(它的) birthplace.

Who were the jazz pioneers?{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(大多数) were blacks. This music was not written down, and at first only blacks played it. It was hard for white musical people to learn the new style. But soon they were playing jazz, too.

The popularity of this music{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(传播) from New Orleans. It traveled up the Mississippi to Chicago, then to Kansas City and New York. By the 1920s, there were many jazz musicians, both black and white. Many of them were{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(著名的). A man named Louis Armstrong is one of them.

Louis Armstrong was not only a born musician but also hard-working. He had a good{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(感觉) of humor and a big smile and he always smiled happily. These personal qualities were{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(珍贵的) in his life.{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(在……以后) he became famous, he traveled around the world. It seemed that everyone wanted to hear Louis play. But life was not always easy,{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(尤其) at the beginning.

Louis Armstrong was born in 1900 in New Orleans. His father never went to school and his mother could hardly read. When Louis was still a kid, his parents{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(分离), and Louis lived with his mother. How hard their life was can be imagined! However, Louis smiled through{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(一切). He later wrote, "My whole life has been filled with happiness. Life was there for me and I accepted it, Whatever happened has been valuable to me. That's the beauty of it. I love everybody."

Jackson was driving back home along a road one evening. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} It was winter and it was very cold, just like his feelings.

An old lady with her car was standing on one side of the road. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. The lady looked scared even when he put a smile on his face. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look like a good man and he looked poor and hungry.

Jackson knew how she felt. He said, "{#blank#}3{#/blank#}Why don't you wait in my car? By the way, my name is Jackson."

The lady thought for a while and then went into his car. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Jackson went under her car to repair it. When he finished, he got dirty and his hands hurt. Then the lady told him that her name was Annie. She asked Jackson how much she should pay for his help.

Jackson never thought about getting money. This was not a job for him. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone in need, she should give that person.

A father noticed his son crying silently. He asked him, "What's wrong, son? "

The boy answered, "My classmates 1 at me, calling me son of a poor gardener. "

The father said, "Come with me, son, and let's plant some2 , it might cheer you up. "They walked to the garden, then the father took out some flower seeds(种子)and said, "Let's carry out an experiment. We will 3 two flowers separately. I will care for one and you'll care for the other. I will water mine with clean water, but you will water yours with 4 water. We shall see the results in the weeks to come. "

More than ten years ago, I finished my studies in college. I dreamed of having a job in publishing(出版业). I went for {#blank#}1{#/blank#} interview in a publishing company. I thought it would be a{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (successful). However, I failed.

During those years, I've been thinking about a question: {#blank#}9{#/blank#} did I get the job at last? When I didn't pass the interview, I was upset, and never thought I could return to the company five years later. However, I just never wanted to give up, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} I kept working towards my dream. All my hard work was meaningful, wasn't it?

 Rudolph plays football for Florida State University. When he was visiting a middle school in Florida one Tuesday, he noticed sixth-grader Leo eating his lunch alone. Rudolph took a couple pieces of pizza and joined Leo at his table.

 Leo has autism, a condition that can make it hard to communicate with other people. His mother always worries about him. Two days later, she saw a picture of Rudolph and Leo eating together and it made her so happy that she cried. Then, she shared the picture on the Internet, along with a message about how thankful she was. The story became popular very quickly.

"We just had a great conversation. He started off telling me his name is Leo, telling me how much he loves Florida State. We went from there," said Rudolph. "It was really easy. He had a nice smile on his face. Just a really warm person."

 Leo's mother said that middle school can be hard, and she worries about how other kids will treat her son. "Sometimes I'm thankful for his autism. That may sound like a terrible thing to say, but in some ways I think—I hope— it protects him." she said.

"He doesn't seem to notice when people look at him when he flaps(拍打) his hands," she said. "He doesn't seem to notice that he doesn't get invited to birthday parties. And he doesn't seem to mind if he eats lunch alone."

 The mother said the photo of Rudolph and Leo's lunch date helped teach people about autism. "The picture speaks more than a thousand words. You can see how far away the rest of the students are, but you can see how engaged Rudolph is with Leo," she added.

"I just wanted to go say hi to the kid, because I saw him eating alone. I didn't even know anybody took a photo of it." Rudolph said he was glad that the story was helping others.

 Leo is excited that Rudolph signed his lunch box, and is enjoying all of the attention. "It's been awesome. Everyone was so proud of me," Leo said.

Look! Something small and green is flying fast over the water. It is a dragonfly! Dragonflies are flying insects with two pairs of wings. They come in many colors. Dragonflies can be green, blue, gold, or even pink.

Dragonflies always live close to water. Look at your closest river, pond, or lake. Maybe you can spot some dragonflies! They produce their eggs in or near water. The young dragonflies live in water for a year or more.

Adult dragonflies have the largest eyes of all the insects. Each eye has about thirty thousand small parts. They can see almost all the way around at once. Dragonflies are some of the fastest flying insects in the world. They can turn quickly in the air. They can fly forward, backward, and even upside down!

Dragonflies are amazing creatures. There are nearly three thousand kinds of dragonflies in the world. People all over the world are starting to realize it! People in Japan built the world's first dragonfly park in 1985. Today there are also dragonfly parks in Europe and the United States. The dragonfly park in Singapore has large statues(雕像) of dragonflies in the lake.
