It's said that Li Shou (隶首) invented the abacus. It {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (be) around for over 5, 000 years. Some researchers believe the abacus has a {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (long) history than the other calculators (计算器) in the world. In China, people {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (use) abacuses to do calculations for thousands of years before people use electronic calculators in daily lives. 

The abacus is usually made of wood. It has many beads (珠子). Each bead above the abacus stands for five, and each bead below stands for one. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} moving the beads up or down, one can do all kinds of calculations. 

It is pleasant thing to watch a skilled hand use an abacus. Fingers move, beads knock, and after {#blank#}6{#/blank#} few seconds, the result comes out. In the past, the use of the abacus was a necessary skill. {#blank#}7{#/blank#} it was taught in many schools. 

Today, because we have been used to {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (use) electronic calculators, we don't have many chances to see an abacus in our daily lives. Many young people have not even {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (hear) of the word "abacus". However, the abacus still plays an important role in certain situations.

We know our planet is getting warmer. The earth needs help. "What can I do?" you may ask and you may think you are just a kid. In fact, everyone can do something to help. What can you do?

Recycle paper. Recycling means reusing something old to make new things. Newspapers, magazines, books and white paper can be recycled. Recycling a ton of paper can save seventeen trees. Visiting your town's recycling centre. Learn the rules and start to recycle. 

Reuse things.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Sell or give away your used things and toys to those who need them. They can use them again instead of buying the new ones. Reuse plastic or glass bottles instead of throwing them away in the waste bin. Reuse the plastic bags when shopping. 

Save water and electricity. Turn off the water when you brush your teeth. Turn off lights, radios, TVs, computers, and other electrical equipment when you leave the room.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} It saves much electricity if you let it "sleep".

Themes(主题) make marathons fun and meaning. Runners run for helping sick kids, memorizing important events, or just enjoying nature. A famous marathon in Gisborne, New Zealand, is known for being the first city in the world to welcome the sunlight every day. Runners can greet the sunrise as they run along the golden sandy beaches.

Marathon routes(线路) let people know more about this old sport. Some routes are very challenging for runners. Runners of all skill levels can sweat(流汗) freely and push their limits(极限). Some routes are well planned for runners to explore the many sides of a city. For example, the route of the Great Wall Marathon takes the runners along the great wonder of the world. In fact, it's also a chance to get to know Beijing, its people and local culture.

A marathon is quite a journey for runners to enjoy the run, challenge themselves and experience the culture. There is so much more behind the race for us to explore.
