Christie lives far from her high school. She travels 50 minutes on the train to get there from her house. Christie has many ways to pass the time when she is on the train to and from her school. She can do one of the following:

◆Read 25 pages in a novel.   ◆Do 2m ath exercises.

◆Write a letter to a friend. ◆Sleep for 50 minutes.

Christie never sleeps on the train on Friday mornings, because she has tests that day, and she likes to study on the train. She often writes to three different friends. She sends them each letters about twice a month. If Christie reads a novel on the way to school, she won't read it on the way home.

SUNSHINE SCHOOL TENNIS LESSONS

Term 4—Grade 1—6

All the tennis lessons will start from October 10th.

The cost is $136.00 for 8 lessons. Classes missed because of rain will be made up (补上). All the cost must be paid at the first lesson.

Henry Leech was a good salesman. He sold lots of products. After a new kind of vacuum cleaner (真空吸尘器) was produced by his factory, he was sent to the countryside to sell it.

He drove out of town and stopped at a farmhouse. He knocked on the door and the farmer's wife opened it. Henry started into his speech immediately.

"Madam, how much time do you spend cleaning the floors?" "A lot of time. This is a farm and things get dirty quickly," said the woman.

"And how much time do you spend beating the carpets(地毯)?" asked Henry.

"A lot of time. My dog lays on them and it always makes a mess on the carpets."

"Well," said Henry, "this is your lucky day." Henry showed her his vacuum cleaner and said, "You can clean the house in 5 minutes with it."

The farmer's wife didn't look interested, but Henry still took out a big bag of dirt(尘土). He opened it and threw it all over the floor. The farmer's wife was very surprised. Before she could speak, Henry said, "Madam, if this machine doesn't pick up every last piece of dirt, I will eat all of it!"

The farmer's wife looked at Henry and said, "WELL, I WILL GET YOU A SPOON. WE HAVE NO ELECTRICITY(电)."

Foxes with nine tails, animals with human faces and fish bodies, turtles with bird heads and snake tails… these magical animals are from Shan Hai Jing ( The Classic of Mountains and Seas). This old book played an important role in the world and inspired today's works. Let's learn more about it!

Shan Hai Jing took shape before the Qin Dynasty (221—206 BC). Like an encyclopedia, it writes about the world in the eyes of people at that time. The 30, 000- word book records about 40 states, 550 mountains, 300 rivers, more than 100 people in history and 400 interesting animals. 

Shan Hai Jing had a deep influence on the culture of mythology (神话学) in the world. It was taken to Japan during the Sui(581—618) and Tang(618—907), or much earlier. In Japan, it was popular. People there once saw it as a guidebook for traveling in China. The book's monsters were also popular. 

Shan Hai Jing has inspired many works. Liu Siliang is a teacher at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He said the book inspired the writing of Journey to the West and Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio. Pop culture works also borrow ideas from the book. Some of animals in the book even go into movies, such as Zouwu, the star monster in Shan Hai Jing. It has a tiger- body with stripes of five colors. Its tail is longer than its body. It can travel 1, 600 kilometers in a day. We can see it in the popular movie Fantastic Beasts II in 2021. 

Now kids are so clever, and they always have their own(自己的) ideas. A group of seventh graders open a museum by themselves. It's at their school, West Middle School, in the US. This is not common(常见的) for them. Few students can open a museum!

 Why do they have the idea? These students visited a museum last December. They loved it very much, so they wanted to open a museum by themselves. These students studied the things in the museum for a month. Then, they made some models of them like pyramids(金字塔) and bowls. 

They opened the museum last month. Dawna Badie is a 12-year-old boy. He stood at the door and welcomed visitors. "We study hard and work a lot on the project (项目)," Badie says. "And it works well." Children like to work in the museum very much. After school and every weekend, they go there. 

Both teachers and parents think they do a good job. "That's much better than sitting in the classroom and taking a test," says Emily Thompson. "The project makes them become better learners." Emily Thompson is a teacher of a middle school. She thinks the idea of the children is so wonderful.
