On Saturday morning, Mrs. Brown asks Gina to study, but Gina says, "It's boring (无聊的) and difficult to study. " Mrs. Brown asks Gina what she thinks is interesting and easy.

Gina says, "Mom, you only do housework at home. I want to live like you. "

"Oh, you think so?" Mrs. Brown says. "All right. You can live like me. " Then she asks Gina to make breakfast with bread, milk and eggs. It's easy for Gina. After breakfast, Mrs. Brown asks Gina to tidy up (整理) the room. About 11:00, Gina thinks, "Oh, it's not easy. " At about 12:00, Mrs. Brown asks Gina to make chicken, rice and salad for lunch. After lunch, Gina wants to watch TV. But Mrs. Brown asks her to wash shoes. At about 3:30 in the afternoon, Gina says to Mrs. Brown, "Mom, can you help me wash them?"

"Oh, I can't. You say you want to live like me. But you know, no one helps me with housework, " says Mrs. Brown.

"OK, Mom. It's boring to do housework. And it's not easy. Now, I want to study my subjects. "

The Chinese language differs from Western languages in that, instead of an alphabet (字母表), it uses characters which stand for ideas, objects or deeds. Chinese words are formed by putting together different characters. In many cases, a single character can also make up a word. As one kind of the most ancient characters, Chinese characters have played an important role in the development of Chinese culture.

   ①    Chinese writing began thousands of years ago. According to an ancient story, a man named Cang Jie invented Chinese writing. One winter day while he was hunting, he saw the footprints of animals in the snow and noticed that the appearance of each one was different. Then he had the idea that he could use different shapes to represent different objects. The first Chinese characters were drawings of physical objects. Some characters have been simplified (简化) and others have been made more difficult over time.

   ②    However, as a whole, the characters have developed from drawings into standard forms. The character for a mountain was at first three mountaintops together. This became one mountaintop and three lines, and over time turned into the character used nowadays.

  ③     Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by combining two or more characters together. For example, "休" was made up of the characters for a man and a tree. The character "囚" was formed with a "man" inside a square. Other characters were developed for directions and numbers. It is easy to distinguish (区别) their meanings by looking at them, for example, the characters for "up" and "down", which are opposites of each other.

   ④    Though these kinds of characters indicate meanings, one of their shortcomings is that they do not show how they should be pronounced. Therefore, a method was developed to have one part of a character represent the meaning and the other suggest the pronunciation. Many Chinese characters used today were made this way.

In the 1950s, the Chinese government introduced simplified Chinese characters in the hope to make learning to read and write more understandable to the general population, which would increase literacy (读写能力) across the country. And now they have widespread use in China's mainland.

Mrs Ball had a son. His name was Mick. She1 him very much and as he was not a2 child,she was always3 that he might be ill.4 she used to take him to see the best5 in the town four times a year to be looked over.  During one of these visits, the doctor gave Mick all kinds of tests and then said to him," Have you had any6 with your nose or ears recently ?" Mick7 for a second and then answered . " Yes,I8 . " Mrs Ball was very9 . "But I'm sure you have never told me that, Mick !" She said worriedly. " Oh, really ?" said the doctor10 " And what trouble have you with your nose and ears, my boy ?" "Well," answered Mick, "I always have trouble with them when I'm taking my sweater off, because the collar (衣领)is very tight（紧的）. " 

All loving parents want to believe that their child is the smartest in the class. Some will call their child a genius. This is easy to understand. Parents just want to make their child feel confident from a young age. However, calling your child a genius is not the answer. Being a natural genius is not common and many parents mistake real genius. The ability to read or speak a little sooner than other children does not necessarily mean your child is a genius. It probably just means he is a fast learner. To call your child a genius could actually damage his early development. 

The word "genius" will put a lot of stress on some children. The stress to____live up to their parent's expectations could feel too big. Such high expectations are more likely to affect their confidence badly. Some other children may become too confident. This can be bad too. The children may start to believe that they are so smart that they do not have to try hard at school. Studies show that it is better for children's development to praise (称赞) their hard work instead of telling them they are geniuses. 

Do not give your child all the answers, either. Asking your child lots of questions will help him think. Your child also needs time to find out what he is interested in. Do not push him to become interested in something you feel is important. Finally, have proper conversations with your child. Studies show that this helps with language development. 

Whether or not your child is a genius, our advice should help give your child the best possible start in life. 

Ben and Tim are good friends. They were very active before. They played games together outdoors a lot. But now Tim is not active any more. He has some bad habits. He watches too much TV and plays too many computer games. Ben worries about him.

Ben sends his friend a poem:

You can be a couch potato and watch TV all day.

But don't do that. There is another way!

Move your body, get out and have fun.

Fresh air, a bike ride, playing in the sun!

Tim gets home from school. There is a letter at his front door. It's Ben's poem! He reads the poem and he laughs. He writes a poem back to his friend:

Your poem is funny,

But I feel really lucky.

With a true friend on my side,

My world will be open wide.

Let's meet tomorrow at six o' clock,

And we can go for a good walk.
