When 1949 meets 2023

Hi, I'm Hanhan, a student from Beijing. I was born in 2008. In the past 15 years, everyone's life changed a lot. My grandfather Jianguo feels (感觉) the same. He was born in1949. "When I was your age, life was very different," he said to me. But how was it different? I'm going to talk to him.

Jianguo: When I was born, many families were poor (贫穷的). Most people could spend only about 50 yuan a year.

Hanhan: In 2023, most people spent about 30,000 yuan a year. It increased a lot. I have some pocket money (零花钱). I use it to buy my favourite toys.

Jianguo: In 1949, about 75% of Chinese people could not read or write. Going to school was a dream (梦想) for many people.

Hanhan: Now almost everyone can go to primary and junior high schools. In some poor places, students can enjoy free meals after class. We have good chances to make our dreams come true.

Jianguo: I used to (过去) live in a hutong with my family. My brother and I shared a small room.

Hanhan: My family lives in a tall building. I have my own bedroom, but life in the hutong sounds (听起来) so interesting.

Most people value some privacy in their lives. If you expect your parents to knock before entering your room, you should do the same to remind them that it is important to do so.

2. Let parents know your plans

Whether your parents set some family rules for you or not, they want to be clear about your plans. If you go outlet them know when you'll comeback and who you're with. Doing this can avoid some parental worries.

3. Help with the housework

Everyone knows that the housework is far from fun, including your parents! But if you choose to help with the housework with or before being asked to do so, you will be in control of your own time, Of course, you are selective about what you do around the house. That means you can choose the housework that you prefer to do and avoid the housework you dislike most.

4. Be polite

There is an expression "a little goes along way" in English. It means that a small polite gesture can have a big influence. Most quarrels (争吵) can be avoided by talking with each other nicely.

5. Apologise

Sometimes, when quarrels happen, we just cant get along well with each other. However, there must besom cone who needs to calm down and apologise, Even if apology is just "I'm the sorry that I fought with you", it will work.

Cheetahs, the world's fastest animals, died out in India over 70 years ago. Now a new project is trying to bring cheetahs back to India. Eight of the animals were set free in Kuno National Park in September2022.

By 1952, cheetahs died out in this country. One of the main reasons was that people took away much of their natural land. Some people also killed Cheetahs for their skins.

Since 1952, there have been efforts(努 力) to return cheetahs to India. Recently, that finally happened. In an event held on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 72nd birthday, eight cheetahs were set free. The cheetahs were a gift from Namibia's government.

These cheetahs aren't Asian cheetahs, but African cheetahs. There may be as few as 12 Asian cheetahs still living in the wild, and they live in Iran. But even African cheetah numbers have been going down quickly. Now there are only about 8,000 left. Some scientists believe that getting cheetahs going in India again will help make sure that cheetahs don't die out completely.

" Project Cheetah" will cost India about $11 million during the next five years. The goal(目标) is to increase the number of cheetahs to 40. A second group of 12 cheetahs was prepared by South Africa, and has arrived recently.

With most Chinese people speaking Mandarin, or putonghua, some local dialects, or fangyan, are in danger of disappearing. To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources(资源) Protection Project in 2015.

This project looked at how people talk in 1,712 places. Their languages included 103 dialects that are almost gone. Over five years, more than 350 universities and research groups joined in, along with over 4,500 experts(专家)and more than 6,000 dialect speakers.

This project has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. Now a dialect library has been built online, where people can learn dialects from over 5.6 million recordings and over 5 million videos. At present, the project has entered into the second stage. It plans to create digital tools like apps and mobile dictionaries to help people learn dialects.

Why is it important to protect the dialect culture? According to British expert Harold Palmer, dialects are the key to keeping local cultures, because they faithfully show the histories, the beliefs and the fixed ideas of an area.

Zhang Hongming, another expert, talked about the worrying situation of dialects. "For about over 10 years, in the Wu dialect areas such as Shanghai and Suzhou, children aged 6 to 15 can understand but hardly speak the dialect. Besides, young people above 15 years old sometimes speak it, but not very well. If this keeps happening, the dialect might disappear." he said.

So, not only the country but every one of us should do our bit to protect dialect culture.
