Hi, Kwame. Congratulations on winning the award for Best Animation at the African Movie Awards! Can you tell us a bit about The Legend of Ngong Hills?

Yes. The film is based on a Maasai traditional folktale. The Legend of Ngong Hills is the creation story of a scenic mountain range on the outskirts of present- day Nairobi. The story is centered around the frightful ogre of the forest, who has a habit of attacking the nearby Maasai village. As the story goes, he falls in love with, and eventually gets trapped by a beautiful village girl.

When did you first become interested in African folktales?

As a child. I remember being told many stories by African storytellers, reading picture books, and watching films. I was especially taken with the famous West African character Anansi the Spider. Anansi is a fictional character who, in some stories, is human and can change into a spider or vice- versa. He's always described as a naughty character who pits his wits (斗智斗勇) against superior strength, usually with success. In many different versions of these tales, Anansi weaves his way in and out of trouble and teaches the audience life lessons. This really captured my imagination. From there, I became very interested in African and African Diaspora stories. These folktales tend to lend themselves perfectly to the medium of animation as they often have elements of fantasy like talking animals and magical powers.

 Why do you think it is important to retell these folktales?

Folktales usually shed light on a moral dilemma in the form of metaphor. I think African folktales stand out because they blend creation stories with a moral lesson. I find that African tales use different degrees of humor to help these lessons be received more easily. As times are changing in Africa diaspora, the traditional culture of the elders telling stories to the youth is disappearing. I feel it is important to preserve and improve these stories and culture through this media of film and animation.

I look forward to creating a feature length African period or fantasy piece. The history of Africa is so rich and intricate yet very, very little is known of it, and film is such a powerful way to tell these stories.

 Thanks a lot for your interest in my story and what is happening in Africa in terms of animation.

Thanksgiving Day is one of the most important {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (festival)in America. It is always {#blank#}2{#/blank#}the fourth Thursday in November. It is a time to give thanks for all the good things we have. On that day, people usually eat {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (tradition)  food. Everybody{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(want)to be with family and friends. So they will get together to cook a large meal. The main dish of this meal is always turkey. Last Sunday, my mother and I learned

{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(make)turkey. First, we {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (mix)together some bread pieces, onions, salt and pepper. Next, we filled the turkey with this bread mix. Then, we put the turkey in {#blank#}7{#/blank#} hot oven and cooked it for a few hours. {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (final), when it was ready, we placed it on a large plate and covered it with gravy. After {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(cut)the turkey into pieces, we started to have the delicious meal. Everybody ate so much {#blank#}10{#/blank#} had fun. What a great day!

Mary had a nice summer vacation last year. She went to Hawaii （夏威夷） in July. Mary likes fruits, and the Hawaiian bananas and oranges were great. The weather was very fine, but sometimes it rained heavily. On Monday she went to the museum. It was an interesting place and not very crowded （拥挤的）. On Tuesday she went to the mountains. On Wednesday she visited an old friend. They went to the movies in the evening. 

The movie was so funny that they laughed again and again. On vacation she felt like that she was a flying bird！The vacation cost （花费） her about 600 dollars, but Mary had a fun time. 

"The baby is fine. I will come next month," Wang Qiujiao says to the grandma of the baby. Wang Qiujiao is a village1 in Zhumei Village, Hezhou City of South China's Guangxi. She is 77 years old,2 she still tries her best to help villagers. 

51 years ago Wang 3 working as a doctor in her home town — Zhumei Village. The village is very 4 the city and there are many mountains around it. At that time, there wasn't even a flat (平坦的)5 for bikes, so people had to travel on foot. Of course, there weren't any doctors6 . Villagers had to walk long to the city to see a doctor when they 7 ill. So if they didn't have serious health problems, most villagers wouldn't 8 to see a doctor. Wang Qiujiao knew the 9 in her home town well. After thinking twice, she gave up her job in Nanning and 10 returned to her home town as a village doctor in1973. Wang often walked to visit the patients (病人)11 her medical box. Sometimes it took her more than one hour on the way. In2015, she became 12 as "the most beautiful village doctor" in Guangxi. People like her and respect (尊敬) her. 

"The 13 of the village is much larger than before, and the traffic is much better. However, most young people leave home to 14 better jobs in the city. So I have to help look after old people and children when 15 become ill," Wang says. Now, her son also works as a village doctor like her. 

For most people, graduation(毕业) is an exciting day. But my graduation day was not.

I remember that weekend two years ago. Family and friends had1 from across the country to watch our class walk across that stage. We had degrees, but very few job chances because of the 2 economy (经济). I knew that the next day I  3 school, I would no longer have a place to call home.

I knew my small university town couldn't offer me any opportunities, so I drove to southern California to find 4 . I thought it would take a week to find one, but it 5 for two weeks, and then four weeks, and I found myself in the 6 spot(点) I was in before. 

You know that feeling when you wake up and you are full of fear? Fear about something you can't 7 . You hope that everything that has happened to you so far is just a bad 8 . 

So what did I do to stay 9 ? I wrote. Something about putting words on a page made everything seem a little clearer — a little brighter. Something about writing gave me 10 . If you want something enough, sometimes a little hope is all you need!

I turned my 11  feelings into a children's book—about a surprising hero who simply refused to 12 on his dream.

Then one day, without a writing degree or experience in the writing world, 13 a lot of hard work —I was offered a publishing (出版) deal for my first book! After that, things started to get 14 . I was 15 a second book deal. Then, a few months later, I got an interview with a big company and got a good job. 

It takes time, but just hold on — change can happen when you least expect it.
