Future astronauts could travel with emotional support robots

To help astronauts of the future survive (幸免于) the mental (精神的) challenges that come with staying in space for quite a long time, space travelers‟ tasks could soon be accompanied(陪伴) by AI-powered, empathetic (有同理心的, 同感的) robotic helpers.

Not only does space travel present astronauts with lots of physical stresses, spending months or years in such a physically demanding (要求高的) place with limited space and the same people can also raise many mental tests as well. According to MIT Technology Review, scientists are working to alleviate astronauts from some of the latter challenges by creating "an AI assistant that's able to feel human emotion and respond (做出反应) with empathy."

While such a technology would prove itself useful by being able to predict the needs of the

crew members in space and "intervene (干预) if their mental health is in danger," it has the potential to be life-saving when humans choose to explore beyond Earth's gravitational field (引力场) and towards deep space.

Though astronauts currently on the International Space Station have an intelligent robot to interact with called CIMON, it is short of proper emotional intelligence according to NASA CTO Tom Soderstrom. As a result, a team at the organization's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is working on a more complex (复杂的) emotional support companion that can control a spacecraft's functioning in addition to tracking the crew members‟ behaviours.

Right now in the lab, an AI-equipped robot called Henry the Helper can be found walking around the grounds assisting visitors who appear confused or lost based on their facial expression. Two more emotionally intelligent robots are expected to be introduced later this year, one of which is said to be able to take part in conversations more complex than giving navigation(导航) assistance.

The team's final goal is to make a companion named Fiona the Future a reality, an emotionally intelligent cross-platform system. Fiona, if all goes according to the JPL's plans, will help keep astronauts of the future stay mentally fit as they start their journeys to deep space.

Meet Ozmo, the Window Cleaning Robot

The rise in skyscrapers worldwide is creating a high demand (需求)for window washers. Although a window cleaner earns as much as $35 an hour, the job is dangerous and accidents are not uncommon. Between 1983 and 2008, more than 70 window washers died while doing their jobs.

To take human employees out of danger, a company called Skyline Robotics has come up with a way to solve the problem. Ozmo, a window cleaning robot, will take over the dangerous job.

Ozmo was created by Avi Abadi and Yaron Schwarcz from Skyline Robotics.They were inspired (赋予灵感)when they looked up at some skyscrapers and noticed that some people were risking their lives to earn a living. Both thought that there must be a better way.

So Ozmo was born. The robot can be controlled by humans safely from the ground, as it uses machine learning and computer vision to clean windows at any height. While on duty, Ozmo will be sitting on the platforms hanging from the buildings. It cleans the dirt on windows using its arms and brushes. As it moves up and down the building,the robot can"skillfully"avoid ledges(窗台)and other obstacles(障碍物)that it will possibly meet.A 3D map of the building's surface is programmed into Ozmo's system to help the robot in such cases.

Before Skyline Robotics was founded in 2017, Avi and Yaron worked as window washers for a few weeks to get to know the job.

Aside from helping humans perform this job safely, Ozmo also helps Mother Earth. Instead of soap, it cleans the windows using only distilled water. (蒸馏水)

After four months of digging, the Ningbo Cultural Heritage Research Institute shared what they found at the Malangxia site (马廊厦遗址) on August 29. The exciting discovery in Yuyao, Zhejiang Province, China, has helped us leam more about how people lived and how society changed over a very long time.

The site is 2,000 m² big, and 102 things were found like ash pits(坑), houses, tombs(坟墓), and roads. They were made in the middle and lower parts of the Changjiang River area. Imagine digging up layers(层) of history like layers of cake! The Malangxia Site has five different layers, and each one is like a different chapter in a book, telling us about a different time period.

The first layer is from the Shang-Zhou dynasties, and we found a special tomb. As we move up to the next layer. Here, we found lots of cool things like houses, pits, tombs, and roads. They are like photos that record the life at that time. The third isn't as full as the others. We only found one tomb. But the fourth layer has a lot of findings, with pits, tombs and holes. These things show us how art styles from the north and south of China mixed together.

Local experts say that the Malangxia Site is the biggest and best-kept archaeological (考古的) site in Yuyao so far. It's like a treasure box full of history that helps us understand how society changed over thousands of years. It's amazing to think that just by digging, we can learn so much about people who lived long ago!
