A horse fair was an interesting place. There were young horses and many beautiful horses from the country. But there were also a lot of poor and thin horses.

At the horse fair there was a man with a gentle voice and kind grey eyes. He offered 23 pounds for me, but the salesman refused. Then a man with a very loud voice came. I was afraid he was going to buy me, but he walked away. Then the grey-eyed man came back again and said, "I'll give you 24 pounds to buy him."

"Done," said the salesman. "He's an excellent horse and if you want him for cab (出租马车) work, he can help you earn more than you pay for him. The horse is well worth the price."

Half an hour later we set off for London, along country roads, until we came to that great city. There were streets to the right, and streets to the left. We went into one of the small streets, and then into a very narrow street, with small and old houses.

My owner stopped at a house. The door opened, and a woman, a little girl and a boy came out.

"Is he gentle, Dad?"

"Yes, Dolly, as gentle as a little cat. And you can pat him."

Dolly, the little girl, patted my shoulder without fear. It felt so good! They led me into a comfortable, clean room, and after a delicious meal I lay down to sleep, thinking "I'm going to be very happy here".

My new owner's name was Jerry. His wife was called Polly and they had two children, Harry and Dolly. The next morning they came to see me. I loved it when they patted me and spoke in gentle voices.

"Let's call him ‘Jack', after the old horse, shall we, Harry?" said Dolly.

"Yes, sounds great!" said Harry.

The first week of my life as Jack, the London cab horse, was very hard. The noise, the people and the traffic on the streets scared me. But Jerry was a very good driver, and that helped me a lot. Jerry soon found that I was ready to work hard and do my best, and he didn't whip (鞭打) me.

He kept me very clean, and gave me as much food as I wanted. But the best thing was that I had Sundays off.

①Like many other dogs, Scuff loves to play with plastic bottles. David Grant and his wife Yvonne Faulkner- Grant always let their 13- year- old dog pick up the plastic bottles he finds while out on their daily walks. 

②In 2021, David and Yvonne noticed Scuff could find even the most well- hidden bottles. They also noticed there was more and more litter in their town. They couldn't believe that people were littering(乱扔) so much since they were both taught never to drop their trash as children. 

③At the start of 2022, David and Yvonne decided to start picking up the bottles. They also decided to train Scruff to gather other people's trash. 

④" When he picked a bottle up in 2021, he would carry it for a while and then drop it again. People would think we were dropping litter. But it wasn't our litter, " said Yvonne, " so we got him to start bringing the bottles to us and we put them in a bag and then counted them up. "

⑤Since starting this journey, Scruff has become famous in his neighborhood. Everybody loves him. 

⑥     ▲      They hope that more people will heat scruff's story and either stop dropping the trash or, perhaps, try picking it up themselves. What's more, they think Scruff has taken on his duties so well that other dogs could easily be trained to do what he does as well. 

⑦" We walk the same route(路线) every day and he finds bottles on that route every day, " said David. " We feel proud that we are picking them up, but a bit angry that they' re even there, " Yvonne agrees. 

⑧Scruff has collected1, 334 bottles. David andhis wife think Scruff has done a really great job. 

⑨And so do we! Picking up litter while taking a walk is a healthy habit that many of us could add to our lives. 

It is my first day in Grade 7. And the first lesson is English, Mr Gough, 1 English teacher, walks info the classroom. 

To my surprise, be holds up2 book, The collected works of Edgar Allan Poe. He asks if anyone reads it. I put my hand 3 , because Poe is my favourite writer. He asks if I really know what the writer tries 4 in his book. Then I Share my idea5 . 

Mr Gough looks at me with a smile and asks me to write a passage about my favourite writer. Mr Gough thinks students need to learn form great6 . 

On the last day of my junior high. Mr Gough encourage(鼓励) me to be a writer 7 the future. When I leave school, he says to me, "you have a gift (天赋)for writing . Tony, 8 one day you'll find out it is great to have this gift. Just 9 good use of it. "

Mr Gough is more than just an English teacher, because he also teaches me 10 lessons. Now when I sit down to write something new, I still think of him. 

 Jane's grandparents live on a big farm. Jane often visits {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(they) at weekends. On the farm, there are many {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(kind) of animals, like chickens and ducks. Jane likes playing with them because it is {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(real) fun.

 There is a small dog on the farm. It {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(have) no mother. It never plays {#blank#}5{#/blank#} other animals. Jane often gives the poor dog some food to eat.

 Soon they become good {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(frieiïd). Every time, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} the dog sees Jane, it runs up to her. Sometimes it runs after Jane to the lake. Jane can {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(count) ducks and the dog can swim in the lake.

 Her grandfather often asks her, "{#blank#}9{#/blank#} does the dog like you so much?""He likes me because I love him," Jane answers. "Yes, animals are our friends, so we should be kind to them," Grandfather says with {#blank#}10{#/blank#} smile.

On a Saturday night in January, I was making my way to a sleepover at Nathan's house. This was going to be a wonderful adventure as I had never been to his place before. I had received the address, 39 Western Avenue, via text message. As I turned the corner and stepped onto Western Avenue, a large cloud moved in front of the moon, leaving a shadow (阴影) over everything.

In the dimness, I found it truly hard to see the house numbers clearly. However, not wanting to waste any time, I walked up the driveway of what I thought might be Nathan's house. I rang the bell and waited patiently, expecting someone to open the door and welcome me. But no one came. Thinking that perhaps they hadn't heard the first ring, I rang the bell again. After a few moments of waiting, I realized with a sinking feeling that I had made a mistake. I had gone to number 37 instead of 39.

Just then, the door of number 37 opened suddenly. The house was completely dark inside, so I could hardly see anything. Suddenly, there was a loud shout and a man rushed past me, running towards the street. Another man quickly followed him. They were in such a great hurry to leave that they dropped most of the things they were carrying. Curiosity (好奇心) getting the better of me, I picked up one of the items so that I could look at it more closely. To my surprise, it was a beautiful brooch. Right then, I understood what had been happening. These men must be thieves! Without hesitation (犹豫), I took out my phone and called the police.

I stood on the doorstep, anxiously waiting for what seemed like a long time. After five or ten minutes had passed, an unmarked police car finally arrived. Two policemen got out of the car. One of them immediately went into the house to look for clues while the other policeman asked me about the thieves. "You did extremely well," he said with admiration. "It was really ____ of you to interrupt (打断) those thieves and chase them away." I felt a sense of pride and relief knowing that I had done the right thing.
