Today,roller skating (滑旱冰)is easy and fun. But many years ago, it wasn't easy at all. Before 1743, peoplenever tried skating on wheels. That changed because of a man named John JosephMerlin. Merlin's work was making instruments. In his free time he liked to playthe violin. Merlin was a man with many ideas and many dreams. People called hima dreamer.

    One dayMerlin received an invitation to go to an important party. He was very pleasedand a little excited. As the day of the party came near, Merlin began to think.He wanted to find a way to make a wonderful entrance at the party. Merlin hadan idea. He thought that he would attract a lot of attention if he could skateinto the room.

    Merlintried different ways to make himself roll. Finally, he decided to put twowheels under each shoe. These were the first roller skate shoes. Merlin wasvery proud of them. He dreamed of arriving at the party and skating into theroom while playing the violin. He was sure that everyone would be verysurprised.

    On thenight of the party Merlin rolled into the room, playing his violin. Everyonewas really surprised to see him. There was just one problem. Merlin had no wayto stop his roller skating. He rolled on, playing the violin. Then, with alleyes on him, Merlin hit into a huge mirror on the wall. The mirror broke intomany pieces with a very loud noise. But nobody forgot Merlin's wonderfulentrance after that.

Among all the poets in history, {#blank#}1{#/blank#}is called the "immortal poet (诗仙)"? Yes, he is Li Bai. Many people think he is romantic and free{#blank#}2{#/blank#}, in the Chinese cartoon movie 30, 000 Miles in Chang'an(《长安三万里》), we see a different Li Bai. On July 8, the movie got the high points of 8. 1 on Douban, being one of the{#blank#}3{#/blank#} movies of the summer season. 

In the movie, Li dreams about becoming {#blank#}4{#/blank#}officer (官员) . But he faces so many{#blank#}5{#/blank#}. He can't take keju because. {#blank#}6{#/blank#}his family. Later, he makes a mistake and is sent to the northwestern China. He has problems just like every one of us. But his poems give us different ideas. 

Li Bai may not. {#blank#}7{#/blank#}as fantastic as we think. But it doesn't really matter. As long as his poems are here with. {#blank#}8{#/blank#}, he is always the "immortal"in our hearts. 

The director hopes we can know about these poets and classic works by{#blank#}9{#/blank#} this movie. He wishes more foreigners to{#blank#}10{#/blank#} about Chincse poets such as Li Bai and Du Fu. 

Cheetahs, the world's fastest animals, died out in India over 70 years ago. Now a new project is trying to bring cheetahs back to India. Eight of the animals were set free in Kuno National Park in September2022.

By 1952, cheetahs died out in this country. One of the main reasons was that people took away much of their natural land. Some people also killed Cheetahs for their skins.

Since 1952, there have been efforts(努 力) to return cheetahs to India. Recently, that finally happened. In an event held on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 72nd birthday, eight cheetahs were set free. The cheetahs were a gift from Namibia's government.

These cheetahs aren't Asian cheetahs, but African cheetahs. There may be as few as 12 Asian cheetahs still living in the wild, and they live in Iran. But even African cheetah numbers have been going down quickly. Now there are only about 8,000 left. Some scientists believe that getting cheetahs going in India again will help make sure that cheetahs don't die out completely.

" Project Cheetah" will cost India about $11 million during the next five years. The goal(目标) is to increase the number of cheetahs to 40. A second group of 12 cheetahs was prepared by South Africa, and has arrived recently.

A Fun Plant Experiment to Try at Home

Without water, plants would die. How does water get from roots of a plant to the other parts of the plant? The water travels through" small pipes" to all parts of the plant. And here is a scientific experiment to show it. 

What we need:

* a celery stalk(芹菜茎) with leaves

* a knife

* some red food colour from tomatoes

* a glass of water

How we do it:

1. Put a few drops of the red food colour in the glass of water. 

2. Cut the bottom(底部) of the celery stalk and place the celery in the water. 

3. Leave the celery stalk in the glass of water for a few hours. 

4. Take the celery stalk out of the water and cut it into pieces across the stem. 

What happens:

You can see red food colour in all cross parts from the bottom of the celery stalk right up to the leaves. 

Why it happens:

The water, with the red food colour, has run in the celery stalk through the small pipes in it. The experiment, therefore, shows that the small pipes in the plant allow water to reach all parts of it. The red food colour shows where the water has travelled in the celery stalk. 

Today let's talk about some customs. It's true that every country has {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (it) customs. 

We all know that in America if people are pleased {#blank#}2{#/blank#} you, they will give you a sign (手势)"OK". But maybe you don't know that this sign is thought to be rude in Brazil. 

In Poland, guests {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(usual) choose flowers as presents for hostesses (女主人). Remember {#blank#}4{#/blank#} number must be an odd (奇数的) one. And you'd better {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(not take) off the cover of the bunch (束) of flowers. You must be much {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(care) when you give red roses to a woman. Because the red rose {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(mean) love there. 

In China, we often hear people {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(say) that" nodding" means agreement (同意) and "shaking the head" means disagreement.{#blank#}9{#/blank#} in Bulgaria they mean the opposite. We really need to pay more attention to the {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (different) in customs. What's more, we should learn more about them in order to avoid embarrassment (尴尬). 

 More biking, better public transport and odd-even bans on vehicles(车辆单双号限行)— many cities are using different ways to {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(减少) traffic pollution.

 Paris doesn't allow cars in many historic {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (中心的) places at weekends, carries out odd-even bans on vehicles, and makes public transport free w {#blank#}3{#/blank#} there are serious pollution events.

 Because the environment is seriously {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (污染) in Delhi, India made the city stop all new large diesel cars(柴油汽车) and diesel taxis. The city has started odd-even bans on vehicles and is now encouraging Uber-style minibuses. Other cities l {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Dublin and Brussels, are also considering diesel bans.

 Helsinki, capital of Finland, plans to {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(完全地) cut down the number of cars on its streets by developing better public transport, raising the parking prices, encouraging bikes and {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(走路). The government hopes that in this way, no one will want a car by 2050.

 Freiburg, Germany has 500 km of bike routes(路线) and a cheap and convenient public transport system. One town, Vauban, does not allow people to park cars near t{#blank#}8{#/blank#} homes and makes car owners pay €18,000 for a special space near the town. In return for living without a car, the government offers people cheaper {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (房子) to live, free public transport, and many bicycle spaces.

 Copenhagen, Denmark prefers bikes to cars and now has more bicycles than people. Large parts of the city have been closed to cars f{#blank#}10{#/blank#} years and the city plans to become carbon neutral(碳平衡) by 2025.
