Dad's Outer-Space Sweater

Grandma knitted Dad a sweater for his birthday. It was PURPLE, the glow-in-the-dark purple! Even crayon purple couldn't compete. Dad loved it, claiming it was his favorite sweater. But I found it embarrassing as he wore it all the time: walking the dog; shopping for groceries and-worst of all-coming to my school events.

During a visit to our local farm, Dad tore his sleeve on a fence. When l pointed out that it was ripped, he said he would just wear it around the house. The hole got bigger and one night, at dinner, the thread became a table guest, Dad forked it up with spaghetti (通心粉)and lifted it to his. mouth.

"Look out, Dad!" I shouted, "You're about to take a bite of your sweater."

Dad laughed, put his fork down and sighed, "The sweater might be beyond saving now." The next day, Mom and I repurposed the sweater on a Halloween scarecrow and put it in our front yard. When our neighbor dropped by to give us some used tennis balls "for our cat, she gave her thumbs-up at our idea. But the sweater got rained on, and leaves stuck to it. Birds pulled the yarn ( 毛线) . Dad finally removed it and was about to throw it away. He stood there long, looking sad. It made me sad too. I thought about the day he got it, the day he tore it, and all those days he wore it, Then I thought of the day he almost ate it.

读后续写

It was Mother's Day and I was shopping at the local supermarket with my son who is five years old, Tenyson. As we were leaving after finishing our shopping, we realized that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and hit her head on the ground badly. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearly in shock. Fortunately, a lot of people stopped to help out.

While we were walking towards the scene, Tenyson became very worried about what had happened to the elderly couple. He said to me, "Mom, it's not much fun falling over in front of everyone," Seeing that there was a flower stall(摊位)at the front of the supermarket, he added, "Why shouldn't we buy the lady a flower? It will make her feel better." I was amazed that he'd come up with this sweet idea. So we went over and told the flower seller what we wanted. "Just take it," she replied. "I can't take your money for such a wonderful deed."

By now medical staff had arrived, and were looking after the injured woman. There we saw the old man was also in great horror, but he tried to comfort his wife and held her hands tightly to encourage her to be strong. We gave the flower to the woman's husband and I told him it was from my son. At that, the old man started crying and said, "Thank you very much."He then turned to me, "You have a wonderful son. Happy Mother's Day to you."

The man bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Regardless of being badly hurt, the old lady looked up at Tenyson with love in her eyes and gave him a little smile. And my son bent down his body to the injured lady and tenderly said, "Happy Mother's Day to you, too."

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, "A fight! Let's go and see!"

"No," said Henry. "Let us go quietly home and not meddle with(插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into mischief(trouble). Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me. "

"You are a coward, and afraid to go," said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.

But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him together.

Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys' laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.

A few days later Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.

A GIFT FOR GRANDPA

Summer vacation was coming. Jack and his brother Berlin were filled with excitement as they thought of visiting their grandparents again.

The big day came at last. After the happy family got ready, they set out for the grandparents' eagerly. On the way, the brothers were excitedly talking about the fun they had with grandparents.

A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared. Behind the property was the forest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. They arrived at the driveway, at the end of which Grandma was waiting for them joyfully.

Jack and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then swept to the living room, shouting excitedly "Grandpa, we are back!"

Seeing his grandsons, Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength from the chair but in vain. A helpless expression flashed on his face. Grandma explained that his health was declining rapidly and maybe couldn't stand up on his own forever. But Grandpa declared stubbornly (倔强地), "I can!" Certainly, he was stuck in his boyish way. Mum and grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time. They sat together and chatted about what happened recently.

The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest. Tall trees stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones rose straight like soldiers. Grandpa was once a great explorer full of wisdom. He could tell where the birds came from only by their calls and songs. The trees, birds, lizards, lots of bugs...How many merry moments they spent with Grandpa in the kingdom!

But now Grandpa couldn't get up. This made them worried. "We'd think out a way to cheer him up." Jack said. "Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird." Berlin suggested. "But he hates birds being caged!" Jack shook his head.

Then a bright idea came to Jack's mind. "Why not make a cane (拐杖) out of a young tree!"

Whether we notice it or not, our child is a little reflection of ourselves. They grow up looking more and more like us. They even have similar personalities and hobbies. And in some cases, the standard of choosing a good friend.

One day, my 10-year-old Jane said, "Mom, I made a new friend at school today. Can she come over tomorrow?" Her words made me extremely happy because Jane was a shy girl and I wanted her to make some friends to bring her out of her shell.

"Sure, honey, that sounds great." I said, thinking back to my own childhood best friend, Susan. We lived across the street from each other in Washington Heights, New York. We met at the age of 10, too. Like my daughter. I was shy and had trouble making friends. But Susan drew me out. She was one of the friendliest people in school, with shiny black hair and a mile-wide smile. Thanks to Susan. I was happy every day.

In senior high school, Susan went on a trip to Florida. This was the first time we had to be away from each other for a few days. "I'll be back soon and I will write to you as soon as I arrive." she told me. But I didn't get her phone call nor receive any mail from her. Soon, my family moved to New Jersey, making my hope of seeing Susan impossible.

Whenever I thought of him, tears came into my eyes.

The next day Jane brought her new friend home. "Hi, Mrs. Smith." the little girl said. Her hair was so shiny and black and she gave me a big smile. "My name is Jo. My mom will pick me up 2 hours later."

Para 1: I was puzzled because my daughter's new friend looked so familiar.

Para 2: Two hours passed really quickly, and there was a knock on the door.

When I was a little girl, I was crazy about snow and winter was my favorite season. I still remember playing with my friends and family with the snow falling all around. I loved to watch the snowflakes flying in all directions.

There was a strong desire inside me that I was eager to have my own snow as a special gift on my birthday. To my great disappointment, the snow disappeared before my birthday and started after it. I was completely mad. I just hungered for my birthday snow. I asked my beloved grandmother why it didn't snow on my birthday over and over again. She laughed, telling me I had asked the same question for too many times. At the same time she promised that she would make it snow when I was enjoying life to the fullest and we agreed to keep it our secret. When I begged her for my next birthday snow with eagerness, she just patted me on the shoulder gently, not giving a definite reply.

That cold winter, before my birthday, my grandmother died. I was deeply sad, but a bit angry because she had promised me to make it snow. The day of my tenth birthday, I wok e up and ran to my window, hoping to see just one snowflake. No luck. I cried and cried, thinking about my grandmother and the dream promise. There were still friends, gifts and a big dinner; there was still no snow. What's worse, there was no my beloved grandmother.

I would pray for my birthday snow in the following years, but it never came. Never!

By my sixteenth birthday, I had lost all hope of getting my snow, even though I still wished for it. During my party, I had the best time ever! I enjoyed the company of my friends and family, and I was truly happy.
