As is known to all of us, Beijing Opera is one of the most important opera styles in China. It is an art on the stage which has about 200 years' history. It is not only a treasure of the Chinese nation but also a cultural symbol of China. Similar to western operas, Beijing Opera is a combination of singing, dancing, martial arts, music and literature, so it is also called the "Oriental (东方的) Opera" by western people.

    Beijing Opera uses special imagery in creating the characters. All roles are divided according to sex, personality, age and profession and social status. Hangdang is the general term for role in Beijing Opera. There are four types of roles in Beijing Opera today. They are sheng, dan, jing and chou. The sheng is the male protagonist (主角), the dan the female protagonist, the jing (painted face) a male supporting role with a different characteristics, and chou (clown) a comic or negative figure. Each kind of role has their own face-painting and dressing to indicate their identities.

    The Opera's performance requires not only the gentle voice but also the proficiency (熟练) of martial actions. A successful opera actor must suffer from the tough practicing period. In the old time, the children of poor families were sent to the opera group in order to earn a living. While now, the real opera artists are well respected by opera lovers.

    Mei Lanfang, one of the most remarkable performing artists in Beijing Opera, was born in Beijing into a poor family. His life was bitter and he had no opportunity to go to school, so he went to the troupe (戏班子) when he was 8 years old to learn Beijing Opera. Mr. Mei was on the stage when he was 11 years old to perform the plays of Beijing Opera. He has been an opera actor for more than 50 years, performing hundreds of traditional plays and over 30 modern plays. He portrayed many bright and lifelike female figures on the stage and became the model in Chinese Beijing Opera and even within the entire artistic circle.

①Last week, I had an unforgettable experience. I was reading a book and had just come to the most wonderful part when my little sister Kate ran into my room. She was so noisy that I shouted at her angrily. Then I felt sad.

②"What's up, honey?" my dad came in.

③"I'm in a terrible mood (情绪)!" I said in a low voice. Then my dad suggested that tidying up things and fixing things can be helpful. I knew he was trying to help me. But every time someone suggested a way, I felt even worse!

④Just then, my friend Ollie stopped by with his new soccer ball. After knowing my problem, he advised me to play soccer or go for a walk. Right then, Ollie's soccer ball dropped onto the sidewalk (人行道). So we ran to catch before it went into the street. We ran and ran until it was stopped by a tree. Then I heard many birds singing in the trees happily. They were so sweet. After that, I found my problem was solved (解决) and I felt better.

⑤So, if you also find it hard to take other's advice when you're in a bad mood, maybe you could write down your own list of ideas and look at it when you need to. And it's important to talk about it with one person you trust.

People often think of the North Pole and the South Pole as similar frozen wastelands. They are both places with very cold temperatures and few people live there. However, the North and South Poles are not much alike as people may imagine. 

The North Pole has no land, only thick ice. Temperatures seldom go above 32°F, at which water turns into ice. Most of the time, it stays below zero. In winter temperatures are usually as low as-30 F. 

Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole. More than 100 years ago, two men, Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on March 8th, 1909. It was really a hard trip for them. 

There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic on foot, People who stayed there may face many problems: very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited. Few people can live in such a difficult place. 

People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water called "leads". Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes. 

The world's best sportsmen get together for the Olympic Games every four years. The 2024 Olympic Games will take place in Paris, France. For the first time, people will watch breaking (霹雳舞) as a new event at the Olympics.

Breaking is also called break dancing. The high-energy, skillful dance includes moves such as Top Rock, Footwork, Go Down, Freeze and so on. The dancers need to think and show the moves of the hands and feet quickly.

Break dance battles (斗舞) are a common way to find out who is the best dancer. In the 1970s in New York City, fighting with others among young people became more and more serious. Some of them began to deal with the problem through dance instead. Just then, the dance style first showed up on the streets. Today people still "battle" in this way. One dancer will show off his moves, and then the next will continue to compete... The best dancer will be picked out finally.

Why does breaking become an Olympic event? If a sport is added to the Olympics, it must be widely practiced by men in at least 75 countries on four continents (洲) and by women in no fewer than 40 countries on three continents. Breaking meets this standard. Also, the planners' goal is to make the Olympics more interesting to young people.

"Breaking has been accepted as a sport. I really feel proud," said Xiaoyu, one breakdancer. "And for the Olympics, it will get more attention from young people who may not follow some of the traditional sports."

I'm Kevin, a student of Grade 9. Most of my friends walk to school, but I like to ride my bike each day. I wake up at 7:00. After I wash my face and eat breakfast, I throw the schoolbag on my back. Do I have my books and homework? Yes, I do.

I take my bike, jump onto it and ride to school at 7:30. "See you later, Mum," I say.

I pass my friends when I ride by. "Hi, Kevin!" they greet me when I pass. Mary does not want to ride with me. She does not like to carry a schoolbag. She likes to carry her books in her arms when she walks. She likes to kick the autumn leaves. But she likes to look at the flowers best.

Not me! I like to ride my bike to feel the fresh air in my face. When I get to school, I lock my bike in the bicycle park. I walk across the sports field to say hi to Mr Brown and wait for my friends in our classroom.

Ms. Chen is very serious and strict. In her class, we don't {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (敢于) to say a word if she doesn't ask us to. Some of our classmates don't like her because she seldom {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (赞扬) us. But I don't think so, I really a{#blank#}7{#/blank#} her because her teaching is so well-organized and clear. Thanks to Ms. Chen, I got more {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (机会) to take part in the math competitions.

Mr. Wu is very popular. He likes playing{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (悦耳的) music in his class. You can't imagine what a great teacher he is! He's really understanding and funny. When he thinks we're getting bored, he will ask us to sit {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (在……旁边) him and tell jokes to make us active again. We really respect him a lot.
