It was raining pretty hard on Halloween, but that wasn't going to stop my little sister Kate and me from trick-or-treating. We decided to start at Miss Parson's house. Miss Parson was loved by us kids who lived nearby because she often shared her self-made cookies with us. We usually finished them in a second, especially when we were hungry after class. Sometimes, when we visited her or did something for her, she always gave us surprise.

Kate and I wondered what kinds of treats she'd offer. As we walked down the street, I held an umbrella, a bag for candy, and my sister's hand. Jack-o-Lanterns gave soft light along the street. Spider webs hung in all the windows. Parents who were dressed up like monsters(怪物) stood in doorways. After we had walked a few blocks, we were wet from head to toes, and I felt Kate was trembling with cold.

There was a light on at Miss Parson's house, but there were no ghosts, goblins(小妖精), or Jack-o-Lanterns. We climbed up the steps and saw Miss Parson through a window. She was drinking a cup of hot tea.

"Maybe she doesn't celebrate Halloween," Kate said with a sigh, disappointedly.

"Well, even if she doesn't, she usually likes it when we visit her, "I said and knocked on the door.

Miss Parson seemed surprised when she opened it and saw our dressing. "Is today Halloween?" she asked. "I completely forgot. I am so sorry!"

The next morning, a hot and sweet discussion about Miss Parson and Halloween spread among us kids.

Carter enjoyed riding the school bus home. The ride home gave him some time to relax after a busy day of fifth grade. He usually sat alone and enjoyed that too. With four siblings(兄妹) he didn't get much time alone. Sometimes he sat with his younger brother, Jackson, but Jackson was sick at home today.

The bus stopped and the tallest boy in his class, Dexter, stepped off followed by his younger brother, Billy. As the bus pulled away, Carter looked back over his shoulder to watch the boys. Dexter was yelling and waving his hands at his little brother. Billy said something Carter could not hear. Dexter yelled, gave his younger brother a hard shove and knocked him to the ground. Billy was on the ground wiping at his eyes, but Dexter walked away.

Carter turned in his seat, feeling disgusted. He hated seeing little kids get picked on (欺负). The sight of Billy on the ground crying was burned into his memory. He tried to think of something else.

He thought of the model car he was working on at home, a 1967 Corvette. He started building it over a week ago and just finished putting it together last night. Tonight, as soon as he finished his homework, he could start painting the car. That was his favorite part. He already had the perfect color of blue picked out.

He hurried off the bus, ran through his yard, and breezed through the kitchen with a quick hello to his mom. She was making spaghetti, which smelled delicious. He ran up the stairs two at a time and rushed into his room.

"Surprise!" his brother Jackson said, throwing his arms into the air. "What are you doing in my room? I thought you were sick!"

"I feel better!"

"What's on your face? Are you bleeding?"

"No! I'm not bleeding." Jackson wiped at his face. "It's probably just paint. Look! Look what I did!" He pointed at the desk in the corner of Carter's room.

One sunny Sunday morning, Lily woke up to an unusual silence in the house. Normally, the smell of pancakes would float through the air as her mom busied herself in the kitchen, but today there was nothing. Concerned, Lily decided to check on her mom.

She knocked softly on her bedroom door. "Mom, are you okay?" she called out. A raspy voice responded, "I'm not feeling too well, sweetheart. I've caught a bad cold. I don't want you getting sick too. You can fix yourself some toast for breakfast, and I'll stay in bed."

Lily felt sympathy for her mom. She must be feeling really under the weather if she couldn't even make breakfast. Determined to help, Lily decided to take charge of the morning routine. After enjoying her simple breakfast of toast, Lily noticed the sink (洗涤池) was filled with dishes. Without hesitation, she rolled up her sleeves and began washing them, just as her mom usually did. She washed each plate and glass thoroughly until they were shiny, determined to make the kitchen look as tidy as possible.

But Lily wanted to do more to help her mom feel better. Suddenly, inspiration struck. Lily remembered her mom mentioning that she had planned to plant flowers in the garden today. Maybe if she finished the job for her, it would bring a smile to her face. With newfound purpose, Lily put on her gardening gloves and headed outside. As she worked, she couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction as she carefully planted each flower, imagining her mom's delight when she saw them producing flowers.

Entering the garden, she noticed that the leaves of some of the plants were turning yellow. Later that afternoon, feeling a bit better, Lily's mom stepped into the garden. 

As usual, the whole class burst out laughing as Patric rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt revealed a red striped pajama (条纹睡衣) top underneath, and instead of white school shoes, he had on a pair of bright green sandals (凉鞋) that were two sizes too big. The physics teacher's hand froze in the middle of writing a formula (公式) on the blackboard.

 Patric mumbled, "Sorry, teacher," and rushed to his seat. Mr Gao glared (怒视) at the rest of the students. The chuckles (轻声笑) quickly stopped. Patric's classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by Patric's late arrival and his odd appearance, which usually included improper clothing. That day, it was the pajama top and green sandals.

 Patric lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school every day. Students passing by in buses would yell his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks. When he spotted the merry classmates in the bus, he would wave kindly. Although Patric was likable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Kevin, who sat next to Patric , tried to be his friend.

    The following Monday, Patric did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school, Kevin decided to walk over to Patric's house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. Patric must be listening to music, he thought. The gate was not locked. Kevin let himself in. He called Patric's name a few times but there was no response. The music played on. Kevin peered (仔细看) in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, Patric was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow (琴弓) over the strings expertly. He played flawlessly (完美无瑕地), so much so that it sounded like a recording. Kevin left quietly.
