    Some senior middle school graduates have different opinions on how to choose their majors and universities.

    There was no question of what I wanted to be when I grew up—a radio announcer. The silky voices of the announcers served as a constant companion who brought life, music and hopes to a nine-year-old only child in the 1930s.

    My family settled in Wagga in 1938. Every Saturday at five o'clock the local radio station 2WG would air a children's programme. Kids were invited to perform their talents. I used these opportunities to polish my voice for the time when my dream might come true.

    Working in radio might involve typing. So, I went to the Wagga Commercial College to learn to type. In 1945, when I graduated, I wrote a letter to apply to the Wagga radio station for a job. Surprisingly, I received a telegram asking me to attend an interview. On the day of the interview, I waited in the reception area with mixed feelings of excitement and calm resolution to do my best. The kind-looking manager surprised me by saying, "I'm afraid we have no plans for young women announcers."

   "In any case, your preference is for classical music?" he asked. "We use all manners of music here."

    "Oh," I said in a confident voice. "I have catholic(广泛的) taste in music." He took me to meet the copy chief. "This is the man you will be working for," he smiled. I was to work six days a week from nine to five, plus Friday nights. The salary was pitiful with the long hours, but I was in!

    After a short while I settled into my responsibilities. On quiet Friday evenings, a helpful announcer offered to show me how to operate the controls at the announcer's desk. He taught me how to put the records on the turntable, bring in the relayed news, and all sorts of tricks I could ever never have mastered alone. This man became my mentor(导师). It certainly wasn't part of any formal training scheme but the experience was invaluable. Sadly, after about six months, it seemed that I would never get the chance to use these skills.

    Several days later, my mother said, "Get ready, and we will go." "Where are we going?" I asked my mother. "I will drive you to Boots Department Store to buy something you think would be suitable for a neighborhood present.", she replied. As we went into the store, my mother gave me £20 to pay for the present. Then she said, "I'll see you outside in the car." She left me alone to do the shopping. I was not used to buying things on my own, as I had always been with one of my parents before. Everything seemed very strange and confusing to me, but I carried on. I asked myself what I should buy and for whom. An idea quickly occurred to me. There was a poor boy called Ralph who lived in our neighborhood. I used to see him often without a jacket during the freezing winter months, so I decided, then and there, to buy him a warm jacket.

    I looked at many jackets and eventually chose a heavy blue one. The price was just within my spending limit. The assistant at the checkout asked, "Is this for someone?", as I paid for the jacket happily. I said it was, and she wished me a Happy New Year. I felt as if I were a real "Neighborhood Angel".

I will share the kind act that I met with all of you.We had dozens of restaurant options within a short distance，so we often took advantage of this luxury.On one occasion，I ran out to get some food.I saw the clouds in the distance and decided I could make it there and come back in time，but I was wrong.I was about to leave the restaurant when the rain just poured.The street was flooded within minutes.

But I had my little girl and husband waiting for me back at home，and they were hungry，so I knew I had to make a run for it.The owner of the restaurant tried to encourage me to wait inside，but I insisted that I should go.At this point，he grabbed his umbrella and said，"Okay，let's go." Of course I tried to convince him that it wasn't necessary for him to walk me home，but I knew I wouldn't prevent him from doing so.So off we went.We quickly realized that the umbrella wouldn't help much in keeping us dry.He walked me all the way to my apartment building，where he said goodbye and ran back to the restaurant.

Again I encountered this act of kindness when I was making my way to the bus.As I waited at the crosswalk(人行道)，it began to rain lightly.Nothing was too bad，but a young guy nearby felt like it was heavy enough to make him step next to me and hold his umbrella above both of us.After a while，the lights turned green.I thanked him and walked across the street.

Getting around the city when you are six months pregnant(怀孕的) and have a two－year－old kid can be challenging sometimes.One spring afternoon，I realized I needed something from the store to finish preparing for dinner.The weather seemed a bit questionable but the store was around the corner so I decided to risk it.

After our meeting, we left the newsroom together and heard someone screaming, "Perry is missing!" Perry was a big red parrot and had been our school mascot(吉祥物) for ten years. He played an important role in students' lives, both in and out of class. He had also been a constant presence at school events, inspiring a sense of unity among students.

Everyone gathered around Perry's empty cage, heartbroken. Suddenly, a student from the crowd came over and showed me a photo. "You're a reporter for the school paper, right? I happened to take this yesterday," he said. In the photo was a Deerfield High School basketball player with something large hidden under his shirt around the size of a parrot.

"He must have stolen Perry to get back at(报复) us for winning the game!" Ashley cried. We hurried back to the newsroom, agreeing to run the photo on the front page with the headline "Deerfield Stole Perry". "This is just the story we need. Everyone will read it," Ashley said confidently.

After she left, I took a closer look at the photo. The clock in the background read 4:15 p.m., but our game against Deerfield hadn't started until 4:30 p.m. Why would the boy have taken Perry before we even played? An uneasy feeling came over me that we might have falsely accused someone.

I went to Perry's usual caretaker to ask if he knew Perry was missing. "He's not missing. He's retired. He's ready for some quieter days," he said. Learning the truth, I immediately told Ashley and suggested writing a story to say goodbye to Perry.

To my surprise, Ashley insisted on reporting the "Deerfield Stole Perry" story.
