Pooja Rai was a young architecture student in 2014 when she went with a friend to give food to a local orphanage. She was surprised at what she saw.

Kids were playing with anything they could get their hands on. One group was rolling around a broken metal pipe. Two boys were trying to play badminton, using old shoes as rackets. "Play shouldn't just be part of a rich kid's lifestyle. All kids have a right to enjoy their childhoods." Rai says.

Over the next few weeks, she talked with friends about collecting money for a playground. And that's when she thought of old tires. Around 100 million tires are thrown away in India every year. Could they reuse them as playground materials and help the environment, too?

That idea became a reality in 2015, using old tires—all cleaned, carefully looked over to make sure they are safe to use, and painted in bright colors. The following year, she created Anthill Creations, which has built 275 playgrounds across India —celebrating the power of play in public spaces. orphanages, and schools.

"Our work always begins with talks with kids about what they want from this space." says Rai. Sometimes it can take a few hours, or a few visits, until children are ready to open up. She also draws on her experience as an architect. "I found that spaces are powerful in shaping people's behavior." she says.

Most of the play spaces Rai designs feature large tire sculptures of cars, buildings, or animals, paired with more classic elements of swings and jungle gyms.

In one girl's school in Bengaluru, the children wanted their play space to be shaped into a boxing ring, with tires doubling up as punching bags. "Their teacher was unsure about it." Rai remembers. "But the girls said they didn't want people to see them as weak. They wanted to practice self-defense and grow stronger." In December 2019, this playground became a reality.

21 June was Li Lan ' s first day back in San Francisco after camping in the Redwood Forest and visiting Napa Valley. She {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(admit) that it definitely felt good to come back to the city again. The fact that the city rebuilt itself after the earthquake that {#blank#}2{#/blank#}( occur ) in 1906 is amazing . Located on top of big hills, many beautiful old buildings offer great {#blank#}3{#/blank#}( view ) of the city , the ocean, and the Golden Gate Bridge.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}( walk ) around and looked at the street art for a few hours, then Li Lan ate some delicious Mexican-Chinese noodles for lunch. In the afternoon, Li Lan headed to a local museum, where Li learnt a lot about the history of California. In 1848, gold {#blank#}5{#/blank#}( discover ) near the city, {#blank#}6{#/blank#}made over 300,000 people from all over the world rush here to seek{#blank#}7{#/blank#}     ( they ) fortune. In fact, few achieved their dreams of becoming rich. Some died or returned home, but most remained to earn {#blank#}8{#/blank#}living despite great hardship. It was immigrants from different cultures that built up California very{#blank#}9{#/blank#} ( rapid ) and led to its becoming a state of the United States in 1850. In the evening, Li went to Chinatown, where there were many caf é s and restaurants to choose {#blank#}10{#/blank#}. After selecting a restaurant, she enjoyed Chinese food on china plates. 

Lisa, who {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(graduate)from our school last June, is about 2. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(go)to college in New York. She came to share her suggestions for high school {#blank#}3{#/blank#} us. Lisa said Orientation Day was really {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(help)when she first started high school because it could help students to get to know the school and the other  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(student). Though Lisa was a member of the school volleyball team, she wasn't selected for the end-of-year {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(compete). At first, she was really sad, {#blank#}7{#/blank#}later she realized that she joined the team for the love of the sport. It wasn't just about winning. So she kept {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(work)hard to support her teammates during their training. Lisa {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(total)agreed with the wonderful words from the writer Maya Angelou-Be a rainbow in somebody else's cloud. So she suggested that we give our friends {#blank#}10{#/blank#}hand when they can make us feel needed it. And this good, too. 

I remember that it was a fall morning when the orchestra (管弦乐队) teachers came into Miss Newell's third-grade classroom. "You have hands for the viola(中提琴)," Miss Ciano told me. I was excited because my hands were finally good for something. I told my parents I wanted to play, and naturally, they agreed.

Since I first touched the viola, I haven't been able to put it down. Ignoring the difficulty, I am pulled closer to it each day.

Classical music is truly my best friend. It is the trusted friend of every man, woman and child. Various feelings are expressed in classical music. I discovered that when I was eleven and played a cello concerto (大提琴协奏曲) of Bach in a competition, the first movement was joyful, but the second movement was mysterious and full of pain. From the piece, I learned that music expresses not only feelings, but also sudden mood changes. By listening to classical music, I know that someone else shares these feelings. Since I am lucky enough to be able to play classical music, I am comforted by it when I am upset. It gives me a way to escape from my problems for a short period. Classical music can express my joy, sadness and anger.

Now look back at that fall day in the third grade and think how gullible I was for believing that anyone, even music teachers, could tell whether hands were perfect for a certain instrument. I'm certain they told me I had " viola hands" not because they were fortune-tellers(算命师), but because there was a lack of violists in our district. Classical music is one of the best things that ever happened to mankind. If you get introduced to it in the right way, it will become your friend for life.

Kelli Boehle says her son Nik was an amazing and caring person. Nik was diagnosed (诊断) with cancer in 2008 when he was 17. He passed away in 2012. But Nik's kindness and generosity have lived on long after his death

After he was diagnosed and started treatment, Nik was granted a wish experience from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. "For just this period of time, we didn't think about cancer," Kelli Boehle said. "All we thought about was enjoying our time together." In 2009, Nik met another young man Nate, who was also going through cancer treatment. He'd been diagnosed a month after turning 18, and Nik learned he was too old to qualify for a wish. The night before Nik passed away, he asked his mother to help ensure that young adults fighting cancer could have their wishes come true too.

"It was like a seed he planted that just wouldn't stop coming into my mind," she said. In 2012, Kelli Boehle started Nik's Wish. The nonprofit grants wishes to young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 who are battling cancer. Nate was the organization's first wish recipient. "It's meant to bring them joy and know that they're loved and that we're fighting for them, too," Kelli Boehle said.

Recently, 19-year-old Jordan Morrow received her wish to attend a Taylor Swift concert as part of a trip to Los Angeles. For Morrow, who has spent the last year battling brain cancer, going to the concert has done more than lift her spirits. "I think it's something to get me through whatever comes my way," she said. "And I'm thankful for Nik's Wish for that."

In the 1lyearssinceNik passed away, the organization has granted more than 300wishes across more than 30 states. In the beginning, Kelli Boehle says she wasn't sure she could be a wish maker and work closely with the young adults.But now, it'sher favoritething to do.

A little girl created the perfect Mother's Day gift.It was a drawing of a 1 on white paper with the words "For mom: love, love, love" decorated in hearts.She folded(折叠) her letter,2 then she lost it.

moved me." Carrell thought the letter would 10 someone's day and maybe he could find the 11 , so he posted it in the Talk of Alvin Facebook group.The message 12 a lot of people, especially one man.

"I was sitting at my friend's house and saw a man 13 ,"said Carrell.

His Facebook comments(评论) included a message from Roberto Alvarado.He wrote, "I can't 14 you found my baby's letter."Carrell reached out to Alvarado to 15 the letter.It took a few days, but the men finally 16 on Thursday night, one day after Alvarado's daughter Natalie celebrated her seventh birthday."
