Early years

Charles Darwin was one of the six children from a big family. His grandfather and father were doctors and the young Darwin went to Edinburgh University to study medicine. However, he hated to see blood and he soon realized that he couldn't be a doctor. He then went to Cambridge University and discovered that he had a great interest in studying plants, insects and animals. Luckily, one of Darwin's university teachers helped him join the perfect trip for a biologist: a voyage around the world to study nature.

The Beagle

In 1831, Charles Darwin left Plymouth on The Beagle, a ship that took him around the world for five years. While he was travelling, he studied the plants and animals in the countries and on the islands that the ship visited. Darwin also spent his time on The Beagle writing notes about the things he had seen. When he finally arrived back in Britain, Darwin was already starting to create his famous theory that all living things had a common ancestor (祖先).

Down house

At home at Down House, a place that you can still visit today, Darwin wrote many articles and books about his travels, but he didn't want to make anything about his theory known to the public. He worked in his study, where he wrote 250,000 words about his theory of evolution (进化论), but he was frightened about what people might say about his idea that monkeys were the ancestors of humans. He thought the public would be against it and was so frightened that he became ill with worry. However, when another scientist started to write about similar ideas, Darwin decided to print his book, On the Origin of Species.

Most scientists accepted Darwin's theory and people continue to study it today. On 12th February, the day he was born, Darwin Day is celebrated around the world to encourage more people to study the natural world.

But one big problem with ChatGPT is that it cannot give right information all the time. Rezza, a 28— year—old English learner from France, uses ChatGPT to write a passage."It gives little useful information", he tells a newspaper. Besides, some students will learn nothing if they always use ChatGPT to do homework.This is because they won't think by themselves. So we should be careful to use ChatGPT.

What is the future of ChatGPT? Maybe scientists need to work more on it.

Hundreds of years ago, a Norse (挪威的) army came from the north of Europe and stepped onto the land of Scotland. The Scots, a brave people, loved their country very much. They fought hard to keep the Norsemen out of Scotland, but there were too many of them. It looked as if the Norsemen would win.

One night, the leader of Scots took his soldiers to the top of a hill." We will rest here tonight, my men," he said." Tomorrow we will have another fight. We must win or we will die."

They were all very tired, so they ate their dinner quickly and fell asleep. There were four soldiers on duty, watching out for any danger at night. But they were also very tired. One by one, they fell asleep as well.

The Norsemen were not asleep. Very soon, they came together at the foot of the hill. In order to walk quietly, the Norsemen took off their shoes. Slowly they climbed up the hillside without making any sound. Closer and closer, they moved towards the sleeping Scots. They were almost there. A few minutes more, the war would be over.

Suddenly, one of the Norse soldiers put his foot on a thistle(蓟) and got hurt. He cried out and his sudden cry woke up all the Scots. In a moment, they were on their feet and ready to fight. The fighting was hard but it did not last long. The Scots drove the Norsemen away and saved their country.

From then on, the thistle has become popular in Scotland. Although it is not beautiful and has sharp needles all over it, Scottish people still make it their national flower.

(In the palace, the Queen sits.Zahrah stands on her side. Amr am is showing some silks to the Queen.)

Amram: Would your Majesty be good enough to feel this silk? See how fine and soft it is!

(Amram comes a little closer to the Queen and holds out some purple silk. She feels it)

Queen: Yes, it is. And I like this colo匚(She turns toZahrah) Zahrah, what do you think of it?

Zahrah: It is a good color for a queen, your Majesty. (She folds up the silk and puts it to one side.)

Amram: Our king, the wise King Solomon, likes this bright purple best, so he asked me to bring some here.

Amram: Yes, your Majesty. King Solomon turned off the road to save the little ants from being hurt ・

Queen: Then he must be as wise and as kind as people say he is ・

Amram: Now you can believe it, can't you?

Queen: I won't fully believe it until I see and hear him myself.

Amram: Then why don't you come to our country and pay him a visit, your Majesty?

Garry Golden is sharing his ideas with some university students.

Golden is a futurist(未来主义者) . Futurists are scientists who study(研究) the world today and use that information to make predictions about the 

future.Some futurists study the environment.Some study human society(人类社会), Golden studies transportation(交通运输).

Golden says there will be fewer cars in cities in the future.

Golden says. "We have to build lots of parking lots (停车场) for cars, but having so many parking lots is not efficient . Much of the time the 

parking lots are empty (空的). Golden says cities will make new laws(法律)to limit(限制) the number of cars in the future.

"Buses have the same problem as parking lots,"Golden says. "Sometimes they are full, and sometimes they are empty." Golden says in the future 

people can use phones to send messages(信息) when they want to take the bus. And buses can change (改变) their ways to pick(接) them up.

"Traffic is a big problem for cities today," Golden says."But there are so many things we can do to improve it. I believe that in thirty years we will live in a very different world."
