My Best Examination

One day, while at work in a coal-mine in Malden, I happened to overhear two miners talking about a great school for poor people in Virginia. It was Hampton Institute. The school was established to provide opportunities for poor but worthy students who could work out all or a part of the cost of board, and at the same time be taught some trade or industry.

I was on fire constantly with one ambition, and that was to go to school. I decided at once to go to that school. Finally the great day came and I started for Hampton. I had only a small, cheap bag that contained what few articles of clothing I could get. The distance from Malden to Hampton is about five hundred miles. I had not been away from home many hours before it began to grow painfully evident that I did not have enough money to pay my fare (路费) to Hampton.

By walking and begging rides in some way, I finally reached the grounds of the Hampton Institute after a number of days, tired and dirty. As soon as possible after reaching, I presented myself before the head teacher for assignment to a class. Having been so long without proper food, a bath, and change of clothing, I was like a worthless loafer (游荡者).

I did not, of course, make a very favourable impression upon her, and I could see at once that there were doubts in her mind about the wisdom of admitting me as a student. I tried to impress her in all the ways I could with my worthiness. How I wished that I could get a chance to show what was in me.

After some time, the head teacher said to me, " The adjoining (隔壁的) classroom needs sweeping. Take the broom and sweep it. "

注意:

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

It occurred to me at once that here was my chance.

Located in the checkroom in Union Station as I am, I see everybody that comes up the stairs. Harry came in a little over three years ago and waited at the head of the stairs for the passengers from the 9: 05 train.

I remember seeing Harry that first evening. He wasn't much more than a thin, anxious kid then. He was all dressed up and I knew he was meeting his girl and that they would be married twenty minutes after she arrived.

Well, the passengers came up and I had to get busy. I didn't look toward the stairs again until nearly time for the 9: 18 and I was very surprised to see that the young fellow was still there.

She didn't come on the 9: 18 either, nor on the 9: 40, and when the passengers from the 10: 02 had all arrived and left, Harry was looking pretty desperate. Pretty soon he came close to my window so I called out and asked him what she looked like.

"She's small and dark," he said, "and nineteen years old and very neat in the way she walks. She has a face," he said, thinking a minute, "that has lots of spirit. I mean she can get mad but she never stays mad for long, and her eyebrows come to a little point in the middle. She's got a brown fur, but maybe she isn't wearing it."

He showed me the telegram he'd received: ARRIVE THURSDAY. MEET ME STATION. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE. MAY. He told me she was a typist and when he telephoned her former boss, all they know was that she left her job to get married.

Harry met every train for the next three or four days. I could see that they all thought that May had simply played a trick on him. But I never believed that, somehow.

读后续写

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Carl lost his job. He tried to find another one but it wasn't easy. As a result, the poor fellow couldn't pay his bills and he couldn't even find anybody to lend him any.

Carl spent most of his days at home. Sometimes he looked out of the window and watched his neighbour's house. An old professor lived there alone. Strangely, he hardly talked to his neighbours. Carl could see into the professor's house because he never drew the curtain. The rooms were full of antique(古老的) furniture and vases. Carl thought, "If I got an antique vase, I could sell it for a lot of money."

Every day Carl saw the professor. He left at 10 o'clock in the morning and came back home at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. He had a dog. Carl often went to the fence and played with it or gave it a piece of meat.

One day Carl thought, "I will go into the professor's house and steal a vase. I will break the window and climb in. The dog is not a problem."

There was an old gun in the cellar. It had been his great grandfather's favourite thing a long time before. Carl didn't want to use the gun but he thought, "Anything could happen."

He wanted to hide the gun under his coat but it was too long so he had to cut the end off with a saw.

The next morning he watched the professor leaving home at 10 o'clock. Carl climbed over the fence. The dog ran to him and Carl gave it a big bone. He threw a piece of stone through the window, which broke. It wasn't high. He could climb into the house easily.

He looked around inside. There were paintings on the walls, small figures and vases on the shelves and the floor. Carl didn't know much about arts. He couldn't choose. He reached his hands towards a big vase when he heard a noise. The front door opened and someone entered the house.

Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus (马戏). Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.

This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn't have a lot of money.

Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were wellbehaved, all of them standing in line, twobytwo behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.

One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband's hand, looking up at him as if to say, "You are my knight in shining armor."

He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, "You got that right." The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, "Please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus."

The ticket lady gave the price. The man's wife let go of his hand. Her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, "How much did you say?"

The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn't have enough money.

How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn't have enough money to take them to the circus?Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.

It was a pleasant New Year's morning, Edward rose, washed and dressed himself in a hurry, because he wanted to be the first to wish a happy New Year.

He looked in every room and shouted the words of welcome. He ran into the street to repeat them to those he might meet. The festive atmosphere swept up the neighborhood.

When he came back, his father gave him two bright new silver dollars. His face lit up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore.

It was freezing and dry outside and the wind blew strongly. However, Edward left the house with a light heart, intending to buy the books.

As he ran down the street, he saw a poor German family, the father, mother and three children trembling with cold. "I wish you a happy New Year," said Edward, as he was cheerfully passing on. The man shook his head, saying nothing. "I wish you a happy New Year," repeated Edward, feeling a little puzzled. The man shook his head again, for he couldn't understand or speak the language. "You do not belong to this country, don't you?" asked Edward. Still the man said nothing, but this time he pointed to his mouth and to his children, as if to say, "These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time." Edward quickly understood that these people were in trouble. The family were in great need of help. At that moment, he took out his dollars, looked at them over and over, and finally gave one to the man and the other to his wife.

How their eyes sparkled with gratitude! They said something in their language, which meant, "We thank you a thousand times and will remember you in our prayers."

Without a word, Edward made his way home, delighted.

When Edward came home, his father asked him what books he had bought.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I sat at the breakfast table with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. "Mama, want to play?" "Not today, baby." I shook my head. These days I could barely get out of bed. I was still recovering from an operation. I hoped for strength and happiness, but the future seemed so hopeless.

Suddenly, Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. "Bird!" he shouted, rushing to our courtyard. Sure enough, there was a white dove seated in a rubber tree (橡胶树). It sat there for a few moments, and then flew away. Strange, I'd never seen one in our neighborhood before.

When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate carrying sticks. "Look Matthew," I said, pointing to the tree. "They're going to make a nest." The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on top of the rubber tree.

Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he'd run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door (滑动玻璃门), talking to the birds while they worked. His happiness was influential. As much as I was sad, I couldn't help but look forward to the doves' visits too.

Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree's broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew, throwing the doves' nest to the ground. I heard the twigs (细枝) break apart.

I surveyed the damage. Nothing good ever lasted. I wouldn't blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from the beginning. Again, though, the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they started again, as if nothing had happened.
