Of all the Chinese 24 solar terms, Clear and Bright (清明) is the only one whose first day is also a traditional Chinese festival, the Qingming Festival. The words "clear" and "bright" describe the weather during this period. Temperatures begin to rise and rainfall increases, making it an important time for growing crops in the spring. As is known, it is a time to worship ancestors (祭拜祖先). However, here are some things you may not know about Clear and Bright. 

Spring Outings

Not only is it a period to honor the dead, but it is also time for people to go out and enjoy nature. As trees turn green, flowers come out, and the sun shines brightly, everything returns to life. It is a fine time to enjoy the beauty of nature. 

Flying Kites

Flying kites is an activity loved by many Chinese during Tomb-Sweeping Day. Kites are not only flown during the day time but also in the evening. Little lanterns are tied to the kites. And when the kites are flying in the sky, the lanterns look like twinkling stars at night. What makes flying kites during this day special is that people cut the string while the kite is in the sky to let it fly freely. It is said that this brings good luck and that diseases can be driven away by doing this. 

Cuju

Cuju is an interesting game played during this period. Ju is a ball made of leather with hairs in it. It is said that the Yellow Emperor first invented it for training warriors. Later, Cuju was used by people to build up their bodies when they were unable to eat hot food during the Cold Food Festival. 

Qingtuan

In the lower parts of the Yangtze River region, qingtuan is very popular on Tomb-Sweeping Day. Qingtuan is a kind of round green cake. In order to make the cakes, people mash (捣碎) barnyard grass (艾草) to squeeze juice from it and mix the flour and juice to a paste. Then they put fillings into the paste and steam them. Pretty and delicate, qingtuan tastes special.

To make* boys and girls open their books and love reading, the Acton Memorial Library lets boys and girls read to a dog every Monday afternoon. In the picture is a boy with a dog. The boy is Stone. He reads to a dog in the library. He thinks reading to a dog is fun. The name of the dog is Molly and she is 5. She isn't black or white. She is brown. She is a reading dog and her job is to make boys and girls like reading. 

The reading dog is nice and all the people love her. Many boys and girls love reading to her, so she is very busy*. Do you want to read to her, too? Come to the library in America!

Hello! My name is Bill. My school has a library. The library is not big, but it is nice. About 6, 000 books are in it. About 5, 000 of them are in Chinese, and about 1, 000 are in English. 

I like books very much. I go to the library every day. Miss Yang works(工作) in the library. She can always help students find the books. 

We have a computer room in the library. The students need(需要) their ID cards to go into the computer room. We have classes in the computer room, too. 

Our library has the Lost and Found, too. Mrs. Black works there. My friend Lucy helps her every afternoon. Mrs. Black is very happy to help the students find their things.

①Sixty-two-year-old American Brian Linden wears many hats: traveler, businessman, educator, writer, and founder of the Linden Center hotel(Xilinyuan Hotel). Having lived in a village in South China's Yunnan province for nearly twenty years, he now considers himself as one of the"cool new Dali people".

②Born and raised in Chicago, Linden first visited China in 1984. He received a scholarship(奖学金) from the Chinese government and came to study in Beijing. During his stay, he was deeply attracted by Chinese culture and would love to be its communicator.

③After working and traveling in over 100 countries, he gave up his job in the US, sold his house and moved to China with his wife and two sons in 2004. He wanted to find a place and create a new lifestyle. After a tour around China, Linden and his wife finally chose Xizhou, which is not far from Dali. "It is a beautiful place with hundreds of old buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Actually I'm a fan of China's traditional buildings. Traditions here remain as alive as ever and the local people treat me like family. I immediately fell in love here," said Linden.

④With the help of the Dali government, Linden spent all his money repairing a traditional Bai-style house into a hotel for foreign tourists. Now the house is known as Linden Center hotel. It provides international education projects for European and American schools. It also opens 50% of its space to the public, creating a place for more people to communicate with the villagers. It offers free English classes to villagers once a week.

⑤When talking about his future plans, Linden said he wants to do more to share with the world the beauty of China. "Our goal is to turn Xizhou into a window for foreigners to learn about China," said Linden. "I hope that through my efforts, more people can love China."
