Did you know that the Beijing Winter Olympic Village had a rooftop (屋项) farm? It covered 4, 620 square meters. To relax, athletes and coaches could try growing vegetables there.

It shows just how much Chinese people love growing vegetables.

China has a lot of available land for planting things. For centuries, Chinese people made a living through farming. The Book of Songs(《诗经》), written 2, 500 years ago, records many kinds of vegetables.

Nowadays, even though some Chinese people no longer have a lot of land, they still grow vegetables where they can.

Xue Ling, 35, is one of them. Since 2010, she has been planting vegetables on the balcony (阳台) of her apartment in Jinan, Shandong province. "It's the only way to keep my food, at least the vegetables, clean and safe," she told China Daily.

Caroline Ma from Hong Kong grows vegetables as a hobby. In 2020, Ma started farming on her rooftop and began planting seeds collected during her trips. For Ma, farming is a great experience.

"I am in my own little world and I can forget about the world's problems," she said.

It seems that planting vegetables brings more than just food for Chinese people.

The meaning of life is what we choose it to be. To Jiang Bing, a man from Weinan, Shaanxi Province, life just means living and helping others. Suffering (受苦) from ALS (渐冻症) for more than 30 years, Jiang has never lost his love for life. What's more, he has been teaching more than 200 children for free for over twenty years.

At the age of 16, Jiang Bing fell to the ground on the way to school and was unable to stand up again. One doctor told him that he had a disease that was hard to cure (治愈) and suggested giving up searching for treatment. Surprisingly, Jiang was really sad at first. Then he faced it positively instead of feeling fearful (害怕的) and hopeless. He kept studying every morning and valued every moment, spending one day like it was a month.

Though Jiang couldn't enter a university himself because of the disease, he succeeded in teaching his younger sister and helping her get into a university in 1994. Later, the people living in the community realized that the special man could teach their children. So they asked him for help. The next year, Jiang started helping children with their studies. He could also teach them art and clay sculpture (泥塑). He once taught 24 children in one single class, all for free.

Today many of the children that he taught have finished their university studies. Zhao Feiyu, a student who once received Jiang's help, runs an art training school now. "He taught us wisely and carefully, and took no money," he said. "He is my teacher and friend."

 Taiwan Island, the biggest island of China, is between the South and East China Seas. Two thirds of the island is covered by mountains.

 Traveling in Taiwan, you can do lots of things. In Taipei, you can taste all kinds of delicious food from all over the world. Standing at the top of Taipei 101, the fourth tallest building in the world now, you can see the whole city.

 Taiwan is a beautiful place to visit, too. One great thing about Taiwan is that it is warm all year round. Because the island is not far from the equator. You can visit the island anytime. Sun and Moon Lake is a beautiful lake. On one side of the island, it looks like the sun, on the other side, it looks like the moon. That is why people call the lake Sun and Moon Lake. If you enjoy fishing, swimming, boating and eating delicious fruit and fresh fish, Peng Lake must be a good place to visit.

Making new friends can be difficult, especially if you are a child in a new neighborhood. It may seem like everyone else has a friend to sit with or to talk to. Don't worry:if you're a nice person, you can make friends,too. 

Step 1. Decide what kind of people you want to play with. Choose (选择) wisely, because you'll probably become like them. Pick children that are nice to other people. 

Step 2. Smile and say something nice to the person you want to be your friend. If you like a person's shoes or think a girl is good at basketball, just say so. Everyone likes compliments. 

Step 3. Join clubs and teams. If you like sports, try out for some. Put yourself in situations where you are around many children that enjoy the same activities as you. It's easier to develop (发展) friendships when you have the same hobbies. 

Step 4. Ask questions whenever it's appropriate(适当的). People love to talk about themselves. Be careful not to ask too personal questions or ask someone too many questions. But asking one or two questions shows you're interested in him or her. 

Dear Jane, 

I'm really happy to hear from you. I think you need to do these three things if you want to  1 your English. You have to read, listen and speak English every day for at least (至少) an hour. 

Let's start with 2 . Don't read to study English! Read to get some new information or to enjoy an interesting story. Choose material (材料) that you can 3 , with just a few new words. If you can't guess them, 4 the new words in the dictionary. 5 don't stop reading. You can do it before or after reading. Read for at least twenty minutes. 

Also,6 English for twenty minutes every day. First, listen to 7 books or news. And then you can watch a little more difficult 8 online. It's easy for you to find something fun!

Finally, there is speaking. You need to speak for twenty 9 every day too. Speak to 10 people, if possible. They can be your teachers or your friends. But if you have  11 to speak to, there are two things you can do.12 , shadowing (影子跟读法). You listen to native speakers in films or on the news, and repeat exactly what they say and 13 they say it. Second, spend some time thinking 14 English.
