①Do you often have questions in daily life? What do you probably want to do if you have a question? I'm sure you may want to get a quick answer on the Internet. But how can you make it? Now some technology companies are working to make this come true by developing chatbots. They are computer programs that can communicate with people by phone, on messaging apps or on websites.

②Chatbots can look up information, answer questions often asked and collect information from users. They can also be used for online shopping to help people choose things that they really need and then decide what to buy.

③There are two kinds of chatbots: closed chatbots and open chatbots. A closed chatbot may or may not use AI (人工智能) to understand messages from users. An open chatbot uses AI both to know what people want and to create a reply. Open chatbots are able to learn from their conversations and then improve their ability to communicate over time. This means that open chatbots can answer a wider range (范围) of questions compared with closed chatbots. Chatbots have many important advantages. One of them is that chatbots are available (可用的) all the time, even at midnight. What's more, one chatbot can serve a large number of users at once. This means that people can get answers quickly instead of waiting for the reply of a human agent(代理人).

④However, chatbots can't take the place of human agents now. Someone has to program the chatbots at the beginning and train them. Sometimes, open chatbots can't give answers to certain questions. Besides, quite a few people like speaking to a human better, not a chatbot.

Susan and Annie are both from Holland. Here are their emails.

Dear Susan,

Thanks for your last email! My knees have been OK since I left hospital last week. But I feel very lonely, especially in the day. You might think many kinds of games can help me while they are boring for me. What should I do?

Yours,

Annie

Dear Annie,

①Sorry to hear you're lonely!

②I think you need someone to talk with. When you have a walk in the neighbourhood, start a conversation with others in a friendly way. And I remember you like shopping. Do you talk with the cashier(收银员) while checking out? It's common to check out quickly, so people behind us inline won't wait too long. But do you know "chat checkout" programme? It is introduced by Jumbo, our large supermarket chain(连锁超市). In some of its stores, customers can talk with cashiers for as long as they want. There is also a chat corner in the supermarket. People can have a good time talking with each other over a nice cup of coffee. The world continues to move faster and faster. Many people sometimes find themselves feeling lonely. The programme is to play a role in helping people tocombat loneliness. This "chat checkout" service is so popular that Jumbo is planning to introduce it into more supermarkets. As you can see, more people in our country follow a different rule at some supermarkets: Chatting happily is more important than checking out quickly.

③Why not have a try to chat with cashiers when you go shopping next time?

Love,

Susan
