When 1949 meets 2023

Hi, I'm Hanhan, a student from Beijing. I was born in 2008. In the past 15 years, everyone's life changed a lot. My grandfather Jianguo feels (感觉) the same. He was born in1949. "When I was your age, life was very different," he said to me. But how was it different? I'm going to talk to him.

Jianguo: When I was born, many families were poor (贫穷的). Most people could spend only about 50 yuan a year.

Hanhan: In 2023, most people spent about 30,000 yuan a year. It increased a lot. I have some pocket money (零花钱). I use it to buy my favourite toys.

Jianguo: In 1949, about 75% of Chinese people could not read or write. Going to school was a dream (梦想) for many people.

Hanhan: Now almost everyone can go to primary and junior high schools. In some poor places, students can enjoy free meals after class. We have good chances to make our dreams come true.

Jianguo: I used to (过去) live in a hutong with my family. My brother and I shared a small room.

Hanhan: My family lives in a tall building. I have my own bedroom, but life in the hutong sounds (听起来) so interesting.

It is my first day in Grade 7. And the first lesson is English, Mr Gough, 1 English teacher, walks info the classroom. 

To my surprise, be holds up2 book, The collected works of Edgar Allan Poe. He asks if anyone reads it. I put my hand 3 , because Poe is my favourite writer. He asks if I really know what the writer tries 4 in his book. Then I Share my idea5 . 

Mr Gough looks at me with a smile and asks me to write a passage about my favourite writer. Mr Gough thinks students need to learn form great6 . 

On the last day of my junior high. Mr Gough encourage(鼓励) me to be a writer 7 the future. When I leave school, he says to me, "you have a gift (天赋)for writing . Tony, 8 one day you'll find out it is great to have this gift. Just 9 good use of it. "

Mr Gough is more than just an English teacher, because he also teaches me 10 lessons. Now when I sit down to write something new, I still think of him. 

Julie is a nice girl. Now she is on holiday in Singapore {#blank#}1{#/blank#} her twin sister, Anna. It's a sunny and warm day, so they want {#blank#}2{#/blank#} ( go) and play tennis on the beach. Julie and Anna are very excited, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} they run all the way there.

Tina is a thirteen-year-old middle school student. Last year, she went to {#blank#}1{#/blank#}summer school in France and stayed with a local family, the Truffauts.

Tony: Hi, guys. Have you heard that several new interest groups have been opened in our school recently?

Jessica: Yes! I'm so excited about joining the reading group. If I can join the reading group, I will share my favourite books with other students. 

Mike: Just as we expected. We all know you're crazy(疯狂) about reading. 

Jessica: Haha. Which group do you want to join?

Tony: I plan to join the sports group. I've always wanted to learn to swim, but I can't keep doing it. I hope I can swim well with the help of my partners. 

Jessica: Great! I also want to learn to swim. I hope it turns out the way you want. We also look forward to seeing you in the school swimming competition next year. 

Mike: I want to join the collecting group. I enjoy collecting old tickets because it reminds me of(让我想起) something important that one happened in my life. I hope I can hold show about my old tickets. 

Tony: Sounds great! I'd like to go to your show, believe we can all get what we want.
