More than anything else in the world, Lion liked being King of the jungle.  He walked around, showing off his power and pride.

Each day Lion took a long lazy sleep under the shade of his favorite tree.  He always dreamed of weaker animals bowing(鞠躬) before him.

One day Mouse ran through the jungle and tripped over Lion's huge paws.  Lion woke up with a start. “How dare you wake me up!” he shouted angrily. Lion grabbed(抓住) Mouse with one paw. “On the second thought, I'm in the mood for the snack, and you'll make a delicious meal.” he said.

Mouse cried out, “King Lion, please spare(饶恕) me! If you let me live, I'll always remember your kindness.  And, some day, I might be able to help you.”

“How could such a powerless little mouse ever help me?” That thought made Lion laugh so much that he decided to let Mouse go.  A week later, Lion was walking through the jungle on the way to his favorite tree when he stepped onto a hunter's net.  The net scooped him up. No matter how he twisted (扭动) and turned, he couldn't escape.

When Mouse heard Lion's frightened shouts, he raced to help. Mouse quickly chewed(咬)through the ropes to make a hole in the net.  Soon, Lion moved out and was free. Lion looked down at the little mouse. “Thank you for saving my life,” said Lion, smiling his widest smile.  “I was mistaken.  You are not a powerless little mouse. You are a great friend!”

One story about Jack, an Irishman(爱尔兰人), who was not allowed into Heaven because he was stingy(吝啬) with his money. So he was sent to hell地狱. But down there he played tricks on the Devil (Satan) (魔鬼撒旦), so he was kicked out of Hell and made to walk the earth forever carrying a lantern.

Well, Irish children made Jack's lanterns on October 31st from a large potato or turnip(萝卜), hollowed out with the sides having holes and lit by little candles inside. And Irish children would carry them as they went from house to house begging for food for the village Halloween festival that honored the Druid god Muck Olla(督伊德神). The Irish name for these lanterns was "Jack with the lantern" or "Jack of the lantern," abbreviated as " Jack-o'-lantern" and now spelled "jack-o-lantern."

The traditional Halloween you can read about in most books was just children's fun night. Halloween celebrations would start in October in every elementary(小学校) school. Children would make Halloween decorations, all kinds of orange-paper jack-o-lanterns. we went together to neighbors' houses, ringing their doorbell and yelling, "Trick or treat!" meaning, "Give us a treat (something to eat) or we'll play a trick on you!"

The people inside were supposed to come to the door and comment(评价) on our costumes. Oh! here's a ghost. Oh, there's a witch. Oh, here's an old lady. Sometimes they would play along with us and pretend to be scared by some ghost or witch. But they would always have some candy and maybe an apple to put in our "trick or treat bags." But what if no one come to the door, or if someone chased us away?

Then we'd play a trick on them, usually taking a piece of soap and make marks on their windows. And afterwards we would go home and count who got the most candy. One popular teen-agers' Halloween trick was to unroll a roll of toilet paper and throw it high into a tree again and again until the tree was all wrapped in the white paper. The paper would often stay in the tree for weeks until a heavy snow or rain washed it off.

No real harm done, but it made a big mess of both the tree and the yard under it. One kind of Halloween mischief.

Hannay was nervous. His enemies were searching for him. All around him were grassy hills without trees. He had nowhere to hide. How could he escape?

Hannay walked along the country for a long time. Then he saw a road worker, who was working alone, fixing the road. Hannay could see the road worker was not feeling well. Hannay came up to him and said “How are you?”

“My head hurts,” the worker said, “I can't do it. I want to go home to bed. My daughter got married yesterday, and I drank a lot of wine with my friends. That's the problem!”

Hannay agreed that he should be home in bed.

“Yes, and I would be,” he replied,”but yesterday I received a message saying that the new surveyor was coming to look at my work. If he comes and finds me away, I'll be in trouble.”

Suddenly Hannay had bright idea--he could act as the road worker and get away from his enemies.

“You go off to bed,” Hannay said,”I'll do your job until the new surveyor comes.”

The road worker was pleased with this idea. He gave Hannay his hat and his old coat. Then he went home to sleep and perhaps to drink a bit more. Hannay put on the worker's hat and coat and began to fix the road. About an hour later he heard a voice.

“Are you the road worker?” it asked.

It was the new surveyor. He was a young man with a clean face. He sat in a small car.

Hannay said yes. The surveyor told him about some work he wanted him to do before he came by again and drove off. Hannay continued with his work.

Then a village boy came by.”What has happened to the road worker?” he asked.

“He stayed at home today,” Hannay replied.”He's sick.”

At about midday, a large car came down the hill and stopped near Hannay. Three man got out of the car. Hannay's heart beat fast. He knew his enemies were coming...
