A dragon mask is used to show power and good luck in many cultures. Here's a step-by-step guide to making your own dragon mask at home. 

You'll need: 

• Colored Paper. You can use this to make your mask beautiful. 

• A large white paper plate. This will be used as the base for your dragon mask and provide structure (架). 

• A stapler (订书机). You can use it to staple things together. 

• Pencils and markers. Use these to draw something on your mask, such as eyes, noses or mouths. 

• Scissors. These will be used to cut out the mask shape and other shapes for decoration (装饰). 

• Glue (粘贴) or tape: This will help you put the colored paper and other decorations together on the paper plate. 

Here are the steps to make your Chinese dragon mask: 

Step 1: Make a copy of the dragon face below on a piece of card. 

Step 2: Use your markers to color the dragon face and then cut it out. 

Step 3: Cut the colored paper into strips (纸条) of the same size. 

Step 4: Fold (折叠) the paper strips to make a wavy look.

Step 5: Staple the strips around the paper plate. 

Step 6: Glue the Chinese dragon face on top of the plate.

During the Spring Festival I went to Hebei to visit a temple, I found that every arch (拱形物) of wooden architecture (建筑) had bird-proof frames (防鸟构架). {#blank#}1{#/blank#} I can't help but wonder if having these frames is good for the environment. So I started researching.

I found that putting bird-proof frames and nets under the eaves (犀檐) of the buildings in place has caused problems for bird habitats (栖息地). {#blank#}2{#/blank#} It often nests in ancient buildings to lay eggs and raise its young. Using bird-proof frames may lead to a drop in their numbers. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} .

As birds stand op nearby ancient trees, their numerous droppings (排泄物) can cause huger damages to the trees overtime. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} They can also leave burns on plants.

In fact, ancient Chinese people already worked out how to deal with birds that live near old buildings. For example, the tiles (瓷砖) of the Forbidden City use smooth reflections to prevent birds from getting close.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#} For example, birds that catch insects on old wooden pagodas (塔) prevent the inside from getting damaged. Can we find a way to make ancient architecture and birds coexist harmoniously (和谐共存)? This is a very important issue for us!

Practical Ways to Show Respect for a Friend

It was reported that the population of the world reached (达到) about 8 billion on November 15th, 2023. From the report, it took the world's population 12 years to 1 from 7 to 8 billion. And it will take 2 about 15 years to reach 9 billion. It means our human family grows 3 . However, population increase also 4 lots of problems, such as the increase in water use. 

As we all know, water is quite35 to humans, plants and animals. 65% of our body is water. We can't survive (活下来)6 water. We can use water for drinking,7 and washing. We can also use it to make things like paper and clothes. With more and more people in the world, we use much more 8 than before. It's reported that water use is growing more than twice as 9 as the world's population. So people in many places have 10 drinking clean water. There is much water 11 in many areas, so people have to walk a long way to get clean water. Polluted water is12 and harmful. Every year many people die from polluted water. Most of these people are children. As students,13 can we save water at home?

● Don't keep the water running 14 we're brushing our teeth or washing our hands. This way, we can 15 save about 760 liters (升) of water a month. 

● Take a 5- minute- long shower (淋浴) every time. We can take a shower every day but don't stay too long in our bathroom. 

Many Chinese words have interesting meanings in them, and there is lots of history behind.

Where to buy things

When going shopping, we say mai dong xi, not mai nan bei. It is said that in the Tang Dynasty, there were two popular markets in Chang' an. One was called the East Market, and the other was the West Market. When shopping, people usually went to the East Market first, and then the West Market. As time went by, people started to describe shopping as mai dong xi.

Left or right

In Chinese, we say yi jian xiang zuo when we don't have the same idea. Why is it not yi jian xiang you? Most people today are right- handed. They feel uncomfortable if they use left hand to write or eat. It was true in the past too. So in ancient Chinese,   ▲  .

"Left" and "right" also have something to do with people's status(地位). For a long time in ancient China, "right" stood for higher status than "left".

Up or down

We use shang ce suo to mean "go to the bathroom" and xia chu fang to mean "go to the kitchen". Why? In ancient times, houses were laid out(布局) in a certain way. The gate would face south, with the bathroom in the northeast of the house and the kitchen in the southeast.

On maps, north is usually at the top while south is at the bottom. In Chinese, we talk about "the north" as shang and "the south" as xia. So people say they are going "up" to the bathroom and "down" to the kitchen.
