During the Spring Festival I went to Hebei to visit a temple, I found that every arch (拱形物) of wooden architecture (建筑) had bird-proof frames (防鸟构架). I can't help but wonder if having these frames is good for the environment. So I started researching.
I found that putting bird-proof frames and nets under the eaves (犀檐) of the buildings in place has caused problems for bird habitats (栖息地). It often nests in ancient buildings to lay eggs and raise its young. Using bird-proof frames may lead to a drop in their numbers. .
As birds stand op nearby ancient trees, their numerous droppings (排泄物) can cause huger damages to the trees overtime. They can also leave burns on plants.
In fact, ancient Chinese people already worked out how to deal with birds that live near old buildings. For example, the tiles (瓷砖) of the Forbidden City use smooth reflections to prevent birds from getting close.
For example, birds that catch insects on old wooden pagodas (塔) prevent the inside from getting damaged. Can we find a way to make ancient architecture and birds coexist harmoniously (和谐共存)? This is a very important issue for us!
