"I don't want to go, Miss White. I'm frightened (害怕的), very frightened,"Monica told her teacher.

Monica was a very 1 girl. She always sat at the back of the classroom, 2 or taking notes. Every Monday morning, there would be a special show in her class and one student would be 3 to make a speech about his or her dream. Miss White hoped that Monica could have a try the next week. 4 she refused.

"I know that it seems 5 for you, but it will help you build up your confidence," said Miss White. Monica was lost in thought.

The next day, Monica came to Miss White's office. Miss White was 6 that she would take the chance. Miss White red-penciled (修改) her speech manuscript (手稿), corrected her 7 and even helped with her body language. She advised Monica to practice and 8 that she was speaking confidently in front of her class.9 a whole week, Monica practiced speaking in front of the imaginary friends and teacher. Behind the locked door of her bedroom, she told them about her 10 .

Finally, Monday arrived. After Monica was called upon to give her speech, she 11 and walked to the front of the class without any notes, in a show of confidence. Monica's successful performance brought everyone a great 12 . The whole class clapped(鼓掌) for a full minute when she completed her speech. Miss White 13 , and she had known that Monica would make it when she 14 took her first step to overcome (克服) her fear of speaking in public.

From that day, Monica's life changed for the better. At the age of 23, she became a news reader. People who see 15 on television now will find it hard to believe that she was once a shy girl who refused to speak up in class. So believe in yourself!

Who would have thought that Albert Einstein, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} famous German- American scientist from the early 1900s, would make it into the news these days? But that's {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(exact) what happened. Recently, his handwritten work notes about the theory of relativity(相对论) went up for auction(拍卖).

Einstein, along with an {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(Italy) engineer Michele Besso, worked together for several years on a scientific paper. They hoped to come up {#blank#}4{#/blank#} a mathematical equation(数学方程式) to explain the theory of relativity. It {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(involve) the factors of energy, mass and light.

They ran into {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(problem) and stopped working on it, but Besso saved the written papers anyway. Einstein didn't successfully finished the work {#blank#}7{#/blank#} he realized that gravity also needed to be considered. He finally published a paper about it on his own in 1915. After all these years, the 54 pages of notes were recently put up for auction at Christie's (佳士得拍卖行) in Paris.

The buyer's name was not released, but the manuscript (手稿) is {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(expensive) scientific paper ever bought, at over $15 million. One has to wonder {#blank#}9{#/blank#} the owner is going to do with those notes. Frame them? Keep them in a vault(保险库)? Resell them {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(make) even more money? Only time will tell.

I was playing at the front gate, trying to decide whether to walk down the street to play with Jenny, when I saw a poor man coming up the road.

"Hello, little girl, " he said, "is your mama at home?"

I nodded and opened the gate to let him get in the yard. He looked like all the homeless men who came to my home before. His messy hair hung below a shapeless hat, and his old shirt and trousers had been rained on and slept in. He smelled bad.

He walked to the door. When my mother appeared, he asked, "Lady, could you spare something to eat?"

"I think so. Please sit on the step. "

Later, my mother came back and handed him a sandwich made from homemade bread and generous pieces of boiled meat. She also gave him a bottle of milk. "I thank you, lady, " he said.

I played at the gate, watching the man wolf down the sandwich and empty the cup. After finishing the food, he stood up and walked back through the gate. "" he told me on the way out.

Jenny had said all the homeless men told each other who would feed them. "They never come to my house!" she had said proudly and happily.

"So why does Mama feed the poor man?" I wondered. I walked inside. "Jenny's mama says those men are too lazy to work. Why do we feed them?"

My mother smiled. "Sweetheart, we don't know why these men don't work, " she said, "but they were babies once. And their mamas loved them, just like I love you. " She put her hands on my shoulders and drew me close to her.

"For me, I fed them for their mothers, because if you were ever hungry and had nothing to eat, I would want others' mothers to feed you. "

I seemed to find out the answer to my question and understand that
