There have been many great inventions or things that change the way we live. The first great invention is the one that is still very important today—the wheel. This makes it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distances.

For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that as much effect as the wheel. Then in the early 1800s the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People didn't have to explore much any more. They began to work in order to make life better.

In the second half of the 19th century, many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the light and the radio. These all play a big part in our daily life today.

The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions. The helicopter in 1909, movies with sound in 1926, the computer in 1928, jet planes in 1930. It was also a time when a new material was first made—Nylon (尼龙)，which came out in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wore.

The middle part of the 20th century brought new ways to help people get over diseases. They worked very well. They made people healthier and allowed them to live longer. By the 1960s most people could expect to live to be at least 60. 

By this time most people in developed countries had a very good life. Of course new inventions continued to be made. But man now had a desire (渴望) to explore again. The Earth was known to man but stars were not. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia, United States, China and Japan have made their own steps into space.

In 1969, man took his biggest step away from the Earth. Americans first walked on the Moon. This is certainly just a beginning, though. New inventions will some day allow us to do things we have never yet dreamt of.

It's not an easy thing to speak out how we really feel sometimes. An English teacher from Fremont, California thought of a creative * way to help her students express their feelings. 

Erin Castillo is a special education * teacher. She made a "mental health checklist(心理健康诉查表)"for her students. The checklist asks kids if they are "Great", "OK", "Meh", "Struggling(挣扎)" "Having a hard time" or "In a really dark place". Each student needs to write his name on the back of the paper and put it in the section describing how he is feeling. If he puts it in the "Struggling" section, he knows he should talk with friends or parents. If he is "Having a hard time" or "In a real dark place", Castillo will talk with him. Also, Castillo made a table for "Coffee Time" Students can sit it at the table and work quietly and independently *. They can listen to music, have a snack or enjoy some "me-time". "It is important for teachers to create a classroom where students feel safe to communicate with others, "Castillo said. 

Robots can help us in many ways. And Topeliffe Primary School is doing something new by helping autistic（患自闭症的）children through robot friends. These robots can dance，play games and tell stories. They can do Tai Chi as well!

Dr Guldberg，a teacher from University of Birmingham，said，"Studies show that autistic children often feel safe with computers and robots. So we wonder how robots can help the children to communicate with others. For example，robots can act as their friends and listen to them at school. "

Ian Lowe，a teacher from Topcliffe Primary School，teaches about 30 autistic children. He said，"The robots are very smart at helping autistic children with their learning. In the future we hope they can help with learning at home. "

And the students love them. Seven﹣year﹣old Joshua says he likes playing games with the robots. Daniel and Kevin say they like to watch the robots dancing. And Stephen says he likes Robert Max when it tells him stories. 

In a way，the robots are helpful for these autistic children to express（表达）their ideas. 

 Do you have good friends? How do you become good friends? There is a boy and his name is Paul. He makes friends with three animals.

 One day, Paul is lost in the snow. Then he meets a cow. The cow helps him find his way home and they become good friends. On the way, they find a rabbit in a snare(陷阱). The rabbit isn't. friendly to them at first, but they still help the rabbit. To show his thanks, the rabbit shares his food with them. When the three friends go on walking, they meet a thirsty horse. They share their water with the horse and the horse joins them too.

 The four become good friends and they are happy to get together. At last, Paul knows true friends don't just have fun together, and they also help each other in difficult times.
