American and British people both speak English of course. But sometimes it does not seem like the same language. In fact, there are some important differences between British English and American English.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Often, Americans don't say each word separately. They say several words together. Americans may say "I dunno" instead of" I don't know". Or they may say "Whaddya say?" instead of "What did you say?" However, the British are more careful in their speech. They usually say all the words and keep them separate.

    Sound is not only the difference between British English and American English. Words sometimes have different meanings too. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}Americans drive trucks, but in England people drive lorries.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}In England, if you are going to telephone your friends, you "phone them up". In America, you "give them a call".

    There are also some differences in grammar. For example, Americans usually use the helping verb "do" when they ask a question. They say "Do you have a storybook?" But the British often leave out the helping verb.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Most languages are like this. Languages change over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change in different ways. This is what has happened to English. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}Many people in Canada speak French but their French is very different from the French of France.

A student walks into the teacher's office with his heavy schoolbag slowly and looks worried. "What's happening?" the teacher asks. He tells a lot of small things that make him really unhappy. Then the teacher stops working and decides to do something to help the little boy.

He asks the student to get a glass of water and some salt* from a box. The teacher asks the student to put the salt into the glass of water and drink it.

"How does it taste*?"the teacher asks.

"It doesn't taste good."the student answers.

The teacher doesn't say anything else, but asks the student to get the same amount* of salt and go with the teacher to a nearby lake.

"Put the salt into the lake,"the teacher says. The student does what the teacher says.

"Now, taste the water from the lake,"the teacher says.

The student gets some water from the lake with his hands and tastes, the teacher asks,"How does it taste?"

"Fresh and a bit sweet,"the student answers quickly.

"Do you taste the salt?"the teacher asks.

"No,"the student shakes his head.

The teacher sits beside the student,"The pain* of life is just like salt—no more, no less.

However, how salty it tastes depends* on the container* you put the pain in."

"How do you feel now?"asks the teacher.

The student looks at the teacher with a big smile. He feels much better now.

"Thank you for giving me such a lesson. I think I will never forget the taste of them and learn to be a lake."

Sometimes, I wonder whether there was any love between my parents. They were busy trying to 1 their new business. They didn't act romantically. They didn't 2 their feelings. They just got used to the company of each other, and I 3 it as kinship (亲情), not love.

One day, my mother was sewing a quilt (缝被子) I sat down beside her and asked, "Is there any 4 between you and Dad?" She didn't answer at once.

I thought I had hitt her. At last my mother said, "Susan, look at this thread(线). Sometimes it 5 , but most of it disappears in the quilt. It makes the quilt 6 and durable (耐用的). If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can 7 be seen anywhere or anytime, but it's really there."

I listened carefully but I didn't understand her until the next spring. My father suddenly got seriously 8 and he had to stay in hospital for at least one month. My mother took really good care of him without any 9 . 

After they returned home, my mother helped my father walk slowly down the country road every day for rehabilitation training (康复训练). They two, hand in hand, supported each other. Once, I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But the 10 is that love is just a thread that holds a family together.

What kind of places will you choose to live in? Many people like to live in big cities better, because there are many interesting things {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(see) and do there. People can visit all kinds of museums, watch the latest plays and movies. They can also do the {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(shop) in big malls and buy things from all over the world. 

{#blank#}3{#/blank#} there are serious (严重的) problems in big cities too. The cost of living is high, and some places in these big cities are very crowded and the traffic there is even{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(bad). Every year many people move to the cities because they think they can easily find {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(job), study at good schools and make a good living there. But{#blank#}6{#/blank#} fact, things are different in some way. It's difficult for many people to know what they want. It's not even easy to find{#blank#}7{#/blank#} nice and cheap place to live. The large population in the city makes it hard to stop heavy traffic. Also, the air {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(pollute) is more serious there than that in the countryside. 

Now {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(hundred) of thousands of people enjoy living in big cities, especially young people. They find it exciting {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(live) in the big cities. However, before moving to a big city, we'd better think about the problems of living there. 

 It was a sunny. sky after the typhoon(台风) passed and some people found a very large hole next to their village.

 All of the villagers came out to see the hole. They looked inside, but it was dark and nobody could see anything. What happened? Was it a fox hole?

A young man was so surprised that he shouted at the hole, "Hey, come out!" However, only his voice came back from the hole. Then, he picked up a small rock(岩石) and threw(扔) it down the hole. But, still, nothing came out.

 To find out the fact of the hole, the villagers asked a scholar(学者) for help. After looking over the hole, he found nothing, but he tried to look confident, and said for sure, "It's no problem to fill(填充) it up!"

 Seeing this, a businessman came up and offered to buy the hole with lots of money. Later, he built up a company called"Hole-Filling Company". He told everyone the company could hold any litter but they had to pay for it.

 From then on, more and more people came here to put their litter into the hole:

 Hospitals got here to throw the dead people.

 The government put all the dirty water into the hole.

…

 Slowly, the sea and sky became beautifully blue. Under this clear sky, more and more buildings were built up.

 One day, a worker was working on the top of a tall building. Looking at the blue sky, clear water and green plants, he was happy that the city was getting more and more beautiful.

 Suddenly, he heard a strange shout above his head, "Hey, come out!"

 However, when he looked up, he found nothing. When he sat down for a rest, a rock flew down in front of him from the direction(方向) of the strange shout. He picked it up and wanted to know why it came from the sky.

 Of course, he didn't know anything about the rock. Only the young man in the village could know that: it was the same rock that he threw into the hole.

 Several days later, the sky was not as beautifully blue as before. More and more litter fell down from the sky-dead people, dirty water...
