Chinese New Year is an interesting and important festival in China. Today, let's learn(学习) some things about it.

We know New Year's Day is on January 1st, but Chinese New Year is on the first day of the first lunar(阴历) month. In China, we call the Chinese New Year the Spring Festival. There is a name for every year. We may call it the Year of the Dog or the Year of the Pig. And the year 2024 is the Year of the Dragon(龙).

Before(在…之前) the festival, people(人们) are busy. They buy many things and clean their houses(打扫屋子). On Chinese New Year's Eve, there is a big family dinner. People always eat jiaozi for it. After dinner, people watch TV and welcome the New Year. People call it shousui in Chinese.

The next day, the New Year comes. People are happy. They wear new clothes and go to see friends and relatives(亲戚). Children like to wear new clothes, eat good food and get lucky money on the day.

People always have a very good time during the festival.

Do you know the Dragon Boat Festival? As a traditional festival, it 1  takes place on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. One of the best 2  of the festival is eating zongzi. 

 People also call zongzi sticky rice dumplings. It is a traditional food eaten 3  the Dragon Boat Festival. They are delicious to eat but not that easy to make. It's 4  difficult for our Chinese, let alone(更不用说) foreigners. 

In Jiaxing, Zhejiang, around 20 foreigners had a(n)5  Dragon Boat Festival. They joined a zongzi-making competition. They each had 8 minutes to 6  zongzi and then the judges(评委) chose the best one. They can't ask for help. They must finish the competition 7 . Some of them have lived in Jiaxing for many years. However, they never made zongzi before. 

In the 8 , all the foreigners were trying really hard. "I knew 9  about zongzi because I saw my Chinese friends make it. So I thought it might be easy. 10  today I found it really difficult," one said. "It's easy to 11  the leaves with rice, sugar or meat, but really difficult to wrap(包),"another also said. 

Other 12  were also amazing. This was the 18th time that the city, Jiaxing, had these activities to 13  the festival. For about ten days, visitors would watch dragon boat races and enjoy folk dances and the delicious 14  of all kinds of food across the city. 

More and more foreigners are becoming interested in Chinese 15 . The celebration of the Dragon Boat Festival in Jiaxi ng is a great example. 

①Celebrating the New Year happens in every country. But each country has its own way of celebrating it. 

②Chinese people celebrate the New Year twice(两次). One is on 1st January and the other is in January or February. People have many activities to celebrate the New Year, like watching lion dances or having a family dinner. 

③People in Thailand(泰国) celebrate it by pouring(泼) water on friends and visitors. They think this will bring much rain in the next growing season. Their New Year is usually in April or May. It is very hot at that time of a year in Thailand. 

④In Switzerland(瑞士), people often sing in the ice and snow world to celebrate the New Year. In parts of Switzerland, people celebrate it by dressing up to walk from farmhouse to farmhouse. They jump up and down to make the cow bells ring. They hope this will sweep away the bad luck of the old year. 

⑤People all over the world have a great time on New Year's Day.
