La-Pierre had flown from Boston to Chicago, sleeping in O'Hare Airport to save money. Early on the morning of October 13, he boarded the city's Blue Line to head for the Chicago Marathon.

The train was full of energized marathoners. La-Pierre took a seat next to a fellow runner and began chatting. Before long, La-Pierre noticed a man who seemed to be homeless moving from passenger to passenger, asking for spare change. His behavior struck La-Pierre as" really weird", especially the way he stared down anyone he felt hadn't given him enough.

At the Cumberland station, several stops before the one for the marathon, most of the passengers suddenly fled the car. La-Pierre shocked, rushed out to see what was going on, only to hear panicked people shouting that the man asking for money was, in fact, an armed and robbing guy.

Just then, the armed man himself exited the train car and hopped onto the next one. La-Pierre followed him." I could not walk away knowing there were innocent children and people just trying to get to a race. " he said.

The man was standing in the middle of the car when he turned and saw La-Pierre. La-Pierre crashed into the younger man, pinning him against the closed doors. The two men fought for the gun—and their lives.

"You don't move!" La-Pierre shouted, leaning into the armed man with his left side. The man tried shoving past him, but La-Pierre muscled him back against the door, grabbing the gun and handing it to a passenger, who quickly walked it off the train.

But La-Pierre wasn't in the clear. The man had accomplices (同伙) who now surrounded La-Pierre and began to threaten him. He knew he had only one chance to save himself, so La-Pierre growled (怒吼), " I'm a boxer. I'll break your head in one punch! " Then the police swarmed (聚集) around the train, and La-Pierre let them take over. He had a marathon to run.

This was not the first time La-Pierre has jumped into the fray (打斗). La-Pierre knew there was more to why he's become a serial good guy than that." I've lived a hard life" , he said" But I believe change starts within yourself. For the last 25 years, I've tried to make myself into a good man."

(1)、What impressed La-Pierre most after boarding the train?
A、The passengers' generosity. B、The beggar's strange behaviour. C、The marathoners' enthusiasm. D、The fellow runner's information.
(2)、Why did La-Pierre follow the armed man?

(3)、How did La-Pierre save himself from the danger?
A、He beat off the bad guys by boxing. B、The policemen arrived there in time. C、Some passengers came to his rescue. D、He scared the bad guys into giving in.
(4)、What can we infer from the passage?
A、La-Pierre must have been a very successful boxer. B、La-Pierre might be living a well-off and happy life. C、La-Pierre might well miss the Chicago Marathon. D、La-Pierre must have done heroic deeds many times.

In my living room, there is a plaque (匾) that advises me to “Bloom (开花) where you are planted.” It reminds me of Dorothy. I got to know Dorothy in the early 1980s, when I was teaching Early Childhood Development through a program with Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. The job responsibilities required occasional visits to the classroom of each teacher in the program. Dorothy stands out in my memory as one who “bloomed” in her remote area.

Dorothy taught in a school In Harlan County, Kentucky, Appalachian Mountain area. To get to her school from the town of Harlan, I followed a road winding around the mountain. In the eight-mile journey, I crossed the same railroad track five times, giving the possibility of getting caught by the same train five times. Rather than feeling excited by this drive through the mountains, I found it depressing. The poverty level was shocking and the small shabby houses gave me the greatest feeling of hopelessness.

From the moment of my arrival at the little school, all gloom (忧郁) disappeared. Upon arriving at Dorothy's classroom. I was greeted with smiling faces and treated like a queen. The children had been prepared to show me their latest projects. Dorothy told me with a big smile that they were serving poke greens salad and cornbread for “dinner” (lunch). In case you don't know, poke greens are a weed-type plant that grows wild, especially on poor ground.

Dorothy never ran out of reports of exciting activities of her students. Her enthusiasm never cooled down. When it came time to sit for the testing and interviewing required to receive her Child Development Associate Certification, Dorothy was ready. She came to the assessment and passed in all areas. Afterward, she invited me to the one-and-only steak house in the area to celebrate her victory, as if she had received her Ph. D. degree. After the meal, she placed a little box containing an old pen in my hand. She said it was a family heirloom (传家宝), but to me it is a treasured symbol of appreciation and pride that cannot be matched with things.  (360 words)

This player is neither the answer to Bafana Bafana's goal-scoring problem, nor holds any hope of being in the national team for the World Cup. But Mmane Koko trains every morning and is now used to playing soccer. She said, 'Before I can do my domestic(家庭的) jobs, I go to train every morning. This helps me keep my body healthy. I started exercising after my doctor told me that exercising can keep my body healthy.'

Mmane Koko, aged 66, said if she had been exposed to soccer at an earlier age, she would have become a top South African striker and could have stolen the limelight from Noko Matlou, who helped South Africa achieve its best ever result in the African women's soccer cup. She encourages young people to start playing sports early and to continue into their old age as it helps to lower blood pressure and prevent obesity(肥胖症).

She added that because soccer is not only about exercising, but also helps one to put bread on the table, it could make a difference socially. She also says soccer is a business and that clubs these days pay generously. Therefore if the young take sports seriously, they can make a living out of it. But this can only happen if our government participate in developing sports and building stadiums for future generations.

Exercise does us a lot of good as Mmane Koko says. We can live longer and feel better through exercise. It gives us energy surprisingly enough! Regular exercise reduces our risk of all kinds of disease. It can help us relieve stress and anxiety, increase our endurance(耐力) and sleep better. Exercise can contribute to our mental well-being and helps treat depression. So if you want to stay fit, keep on exercising to keep your body healthy.

After disappearing for over 19 years, measles (麻疹) is making a comeback in America. Since January 2019, the disease has infected more than 700 people, mostly small children, and the number seems to be increasing daily.

Measles is an infectious disease that typically begins with a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Many people also lose their appetites and feel sleepy. About three to four days after the symptoms start, the person breaks out into a rash (皮疹) that begins on the face at the hairline and then spreads to the neck and the rest of the body.

In healthy people, the recovery, which takes between two to three weeks, starts soon after the rash begins. However, for about 40 percent of patients mainly kids under the age of five or older adults the disease often leads to pneumonia (肺炎), which, if left untreated, could result in death.

The recent outbreak is thought to have been caused by travelers picking up the virus in a country where the disease is still existing and exposing it to an unvaccinated (未接种的) community in the US. In New York, it was carried back by someone who had recently visited Israel, which is currently undergoing a significant measles, while in Washington, "patient zero" was infected by a type that is currently circulating in Europe.

To limit the spread of the disease before it gets out of hand, US health officials are attempting to educate communities with high rates of unvaccinated children. They are also urging adults to consult with their physicians and get injected if considered necessary by the doctor.

Hopefully, health officials worldwide will be able to convince parents that vaccinating their children will protect, not harm, them.

Being able to take advantage of truly unlimited data is a smartphone user's dream, but everyone I've talked to about 5G is more excited about the usage unlocked by next - generation wireless devices. From smart home security to self - driving cars, all the Internet - connected equipment in your life will be able to talk to each other at lightning - fast speed with reduced delay.

"5 G is one of those forerunners, along with artificial intelligence, of this coming data age," said Steve Koenig, senior director of market research for the Consumer Technology Association. "Self - driving vehicles are emblematic in this data age - they show application of data completely. With one single task, driving, you have large amounts of data coming from the vehicle itself, and a variety of sensors (传感器)are collecting a lot of information to model its environment as it moves. It's pulling in data from other vehicles about conditions down the road. There's lots of data behind that task, which is why we need the speed and lower latency ((延迟).

AR glasses and virtual (虚拟的)reality headphones haven't yet been inside the mainstream, but tech companies are joyfully saying that such equipment will eventually replace our smartphones. With 5G, that could actually happen. This is notable because companies such as Apple are reportedly developing AR glasses to improve - or even replace - smartphones.

Ericsson showed at February's Mobile World Congress in 2019 how smart glasses could become faster and lighter with a 5G connection, because instead of being weighed down with components, the glasses could rely on outside equipment for processing power.

But don't get too excited. There's still a lot of work to be done in the meantime, including some necessary testing to make sure the radio plays nicely with basic systems and service construction so that 5G isn't concentrated only in big cities.
