On 28 of March Richard Byrd stood outside the small house. He shook hands with the menwho were leaving. They were heading back to the main camp on the coast of Antarctica （南极洲）. 

He would1 to work at the base camp. 

"I don't like leaving you here alone，"Pete Demas said. "I'll be2 ，"Byrd replied. 

He was looking forward to the challenge of spending the winter at the base camp. He would be recording the weather. There was plenty of food and fuel （燃料） in the tiny house. He felt sure3 would go wrong. 

But something did go wrong. Byrd was burning the fuel for4 . But the fumes （有毒气体）were not leaving the house. Slowly he was being poisoned（中毒）. On May 31 he broke down. 

When he came to，he made himself into his sleeping bag. Three days later he5 it was a Sunday. The men would be6 his radio message. Byrd moved hard out of bed and 7 the call. He didn't want the men to know how 8 he was. It was too dangerous for them to come to save him. 

By will-power alone，Byrd managed to stay alive. He was so9 that he could hardly walk. But he forced himself to do the basics. He10 food and made myself eat. He took11 of weather and sent radio messages. But by late June，the men12 that something was wrong. Most of the time，Byrd's messages made no sense. 

On August 11Demas and two others reached the base camp. They13 recognized （认出） Byrd. He was very thin and looked terrible. Byrd14 them and then fell to the ground. The men had arrived in time. After two months of care，Byrd's good15 returned. He and his men worked together again. 

With the development of science and technology(技术), our daily life is becoming easier and more colorful.

Are you good at remembering what you've learned at school? Is it an easy process for all people? Noone's memory is perfect. Even the smartest people forget things. This does not mean a person has a badmemory. It means he is not using his mind to his advantages. 

The brain has short-term memory and long-term memory. When we learn something new, it stays in ourmemory for around 20-30 seconds. This is our short-term memory. It can hold a small amount of information. If we repeat it and use it often, this information can move from short-term memory to long-term memory, which is the place where memories are stored for a long time. 

The skill for remembering is moving information from short-term to long-term memory. No one knowsexactly how this happens. But one thing is for sure—practising, or making repetition of information, is one ofthe most popular methods of remembering. And scientists say that long-term memory will never fill upcompletely with memories in one's lifetime. 

Then why do we forget things? Forgetting things that are not important helps our brain to rememberthings that are important. Our brain is always "cleaning out"useless information to make room for somethingmore useful. 

If you are interested in improving your memory, there are lots of simple things you can do, like eatinghealthily, sleeping well and exercising daily. Besides, it's also important to challenge your brain. You can playmind games, learn a musical instrument or study a new language. All you need to do is to keep your brainhealthy and active. 

① We can find ants everywhere— in the forests and mountains, in the fields, in the countryside and cities, all over the earth. But how much do you know about them?

② Their colour is usually yellow, brown, red or black. These little animals live and work in groups. They always build "houses", find food and raise babies together. The colony (群) of ants can be small or large. The number can be from just a few to millions!

③ Usually, there are three castes (等级) in ant societies. They are queens, the males and the workers. Queen ants are usually the biggest ants in colonies.  ▲  It lays (产) all the eggs, so the queen becomes the most important ant in the colony. A queen ant can live for longer. The males have larger wings and larger bodies than the worker ants. They can help out with the colony housework, but mostly they do not. They can only live for a few weeks. The queens and the workers are the winners by numbers. The workers do all the "housework"— from building and cleaning the "house" to looking for food. Workers usually live for several months. Workers are also good at building homes. They can build their homes in different places. You may find their homes under rocks or in the trees. How amazing!

④ One ant by itself cannot bring any danger to many other larger animals. However, they can beat much bigger animals in large groups. By working together, these brave(勇敢的) ants can protect their colonies against other animals.
