To Borrow Arrows with Thatched Boats

One day, Zhou Yu ordered Zhuge Liang to make 100,000 arrows（箭）in ten days. Zhou Yu thought it was impossible, but Zhuge Liang said, "Give me three days." Then he asked Lu Su to lend him 20 boats, and the soldiers put some scarecrows（稻草人）in line on the boats. He reminded Lu Su not to tell Zhou Yu what was happening. 

When Lu Su came again to see Zhuge Liang, he found nothing unusual. Nothing happened on the second day, either. In the small hours（凌晨）of the third day, Zhuge Liang invited Lu Su for a boat ride. The 20 boats were tied together with strong ropes. Zhuge's fleet went towards the camp of Cao Cao. The surface of the river was covered with thick mist（雾）all over. People could hardly see each other on the river. When Zhuge's fleet got close to the Cao camp before dawn（黎明）, Zhuge Liang ordered his soldiers to shout and beat drums heavily to pretend an attack. But Zhuge and Lu Su only sat inside one boat drinking wine to enjoy themselves. 

As soon as the Cao camp heard the shouting and drum beating, they mistook it for a surprise attack by the Zhou Yu camp. Since they could see nobody on the river, they had to order 3,000 soldiers to shoot arrows to stop the unexpected attack. The front of the scarecrows was quickly full of arrows. After a while, Zhuge Liang had his fleet turned around to get the other side of the scarecrows to face the Cao camp. When both sides were full of arrows, the day broke. Zhuge Liang ordered his soldiers to return. The soldiers shouted in excitement, "Thank you, Cao Cao, for your arrows." After they got back to their camp, they collected more than 100,000 arrows in total from the scarecrows.

I sat on the steps next to Peter and watched him play his new guitar. His left hand worked the strings(弦)1 his right hand played.

" Just in time for the school talent show next   2 ,"I said.

" Are you doing anything for the talent show, Jeremy?" Peter asked.

" No,"I said." If I were a little   3 , like you, 14 years old, maybe I could, too. I believe you' ll win the first prize this year."

" Maybe," said Peter,"I'm playing a song I4 myself."

" You write your own song?"

" It's not   5 ," he said." My song is called ' Two for One'. I got the   6 easily from a two- for- one sale at the store. And I liked the sound of ' Two for One'.7 song goes like this: ' Two for one, two for one, that's the way to have some fun.'I haven't written all the words yet."

The next morning, I saw Peter was so 8 . His right arm was broken.

"I got   9 when playing baseball yesterday," he said," Now I can't be in the talent show next week."

Peter and I10 each other worriedly. Then I had an idea.

" We could sit next to each other on the stage," I said," You could play the left- hand parts, and I' ll play with my right hand."

" Where can I put my right hand while we   13 ?"

" Put it on my shoulder," I told him," We' re14 aren't we?"

Our song answered that question. We finished writing the words together15

" Two for one, one for two, see what two good friends can do!"

Tyler was a troublesome student. He sat in the back row. Every time I asked him to answer questions, he'd reply with a flip(轻率的) answer. If he got it wrong, he would get very angry. 

Usually kids could sit quietly in class. However, Tyler was just noisy. One day, Tyler was talking while I was teaching. I said to him, "Tyler, why not join in our discussion instead of having one of your own?" He got up from his chair, pushed it over, and shouted something I can't remember. I sent him to the office and he received a week's out-of-school punishment. 

The week was a wonderful time for me, but when it came to an end, I began to feel worried. So I came up with a plan. On the day of his return, I told him I wanted to start over with him. If he felt like he was going to lose control in class, he could step outside the door for a moment. 

From then on, Tyler was a changed student in my classroom. In fact he was a smart child and he even stopped a fight between two students one day. And he never used the privilege(特权) to leave the class for a moment. I believe that just letting him decide for himself made all the difference. 

When the year was over, he wrote me a thank-you note about how good the year had been for him. I still have it today and find it very moving to reread when I get worried about teaching. 

Two Canadian teenagers, Faiz and Leo, have been taking on a series of wonderful challenges. Their most recent achievement was following the Lake Ontario coastline for 73 kilometers, walking from Toronto to Hamilton, Canada, in about 18 hours.

"We enjoy trying new things that are good for our bodies and minds. We like to overcome challenges like these. And we feel going on a long walk seems to be the purest form of challenge that you can have," Leo said.

With very little preparation, the two 16-year-olds began their journey at 6 am, starting in darkness and finishing before midnight. They took several breaks, stopping at benches with nice views along the way.

On their walk, one of the interesting things they came across was a cargo ship (货船) which was no longer used. "You' d be surprised by the things that you don't see when you' re driving and that you will see when you' re taking your time walking," said Leo.

However, the journey was not only a trial (考验) for bodies but also an important test of minds. There were moments of loneliness for the pair, requiring them to support each other along the way.

Around 70 km into the walk, they ran into a person on a bridge who appeared to be experiencing something painful.

"I wasn't sure what was going to happen me and Leo, we tried to talk him out of it and ended up calling the police, and the situation was eased and everyone was OK," Faiz said.

The walk is now long over but Faiz and Leo are not done challenging themselves, with plans to start a two-day 100 km walk in the near future.

19- year- old George is armless. But he doesn't let that stop him from {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(share) his interests with the world. 

Born without arms, the young boy's birth parents left him. Luckily, a couple {#blank#}2{#/blank#} is warm-hearted took him home. They took good care {#blank#}3{#/blank#} him. However, his new parents never allowed him to use his disability as{#blank#}4{#/blank#} excuse to be lazy. When George turned eight, they asked him {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(have) cello(大提琴) lessons. 

The musical instrument is hard even for people {#blank#}6{#/blank#} use both their hands. So it was even {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (difficult) for George. He had to learn to play it with his {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (foot). 

Thanks to his music teacher, the young boy not only learnt the cello, but also realised that he had a talent for music. During middle school, he also learnt to play the piano {#blank#}9{#/blank#} the guitar. 

His music talent {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (catch) the eye of an American rock band and they invited him to play with them at a ten- day- long music festival. 

Mr Kent's students cared about a hurricane(飓风)in Mexico. The wind blew trees over and damaged houses. In the heavy1 , houses and streets were flooded. The class discussed what they could2 to help people there.

Ava said, "People will need clothes." "They'll need blankets(毯子)to keep3 ," Melanie added. "I have a new blanket and a ton of clothes. We should4 those to people in Mexico," said Brett. "Brett, that's brilliant!" said Ava. "You, Melanie and I, and anyone else in the school,5 bring in our extra clothes and blankets to help people in Mexico."

The students talked to Mr Kent about6 they could collect clothes and blankets. Some kids were going to7 some signs saying "Blanket Drive". Other kids were writing a newsletter. Everyone was going to ask8 friends and relatives for clothes and blankets. Brett was put in charge of(负责)stacking all the clothes and blankets in the gym.

News of the Blanket Drive spread,9 people living all over the city brought in more clothes and blankets.10 in town was talking about the Blanket Drive. The local television station sent a camera crew(摄制组)to the11 . The reporter wanted to know whose idea this was.

Finally, they found Brett in the gym,12 thousands of blankets and pieces of clothing. The reporter said to Brett, "This was a great idea. You must be very13 of yourself for thinking of it."

Brett looked at the mountain of clothes behind him and then looked back at the camera. "No," Brett said 14 . "We had a lot of clothes and blankets, and those people in Mexico really need them. We're just trying to15 . It's simple."
