浙江省湖州市环渚学校2012届九年级上学期第二次联合调测英语考试试卷

根据短文内容,选择正确答案。

"Depend on yourself" is what nature says to every man. Parents can help you. Teachers can help you. Others still can help you. But all these people only help you to help yourself.

There have been many great men in history. Many of them were very poor when they were young, and had no uncles, aunts, or friends to help them. Schools were few and not very good. They could not depend on them for education. They tried their best to learn something and never gave up till they became well-known. One of the most famous teachers in England used to tell his pupils, "I cannot make worthy men of you, but I can help you make men of yourselves."

Some young men don't try their best to make themselves valuable to the human beings. If they see their weak points and change their ways, they can be successful. They are nothing now, and will be nothing as long as(只要) they live, unless they accept the advice of their parents and teachers, and depend on themselves.

(1)、Why did many men succeed?
A、Because they had good education. B、Because they wanted very much to become well-known. C、Because they worked hard. D、Because their families were very rich.
(2)、What can a teacher do according to the famous teacher in England?
A、A teacher can make his pupils men of strength and courage. B、A teacher can make his pupils worthy. C、A teacher can help his pupils become well-known. D、A teacher can do nothing.
(3)、If young people depend on their own efforts, _______________.
A、they are sure to be very famous in the world B、they can be successful in their lives C、they no longer need help D、they are sure to fail
(4)、What can we learn about the writer from the passage?
A、He thinks highly of those who are working hard to be successful. B、He thinks highly of parents and teachers. C、He wants to be a famous scientist. D、He thinks highly of those who are poor.

Mesa Verde National Park, in Colorado, America, has many "cliff dwellings"— places that are built into the cliffs(悬崖)where people once lived. They look almost impossible to get to. Who lived in them, and why did they live there?

People lived there about 800 years ago. Americans call them the Ancestral Puebloans(古普韦布洛人的祖先). They grew food on the mesa (平顶山), the flat land on top of the cliffs. They kept animals on the mesa too. They travelled over the mesa to trade with each other. Why didn't they build homes on the mesa?

One reason was the weather. Winters were getting colder and colder. The mesa was flat and open. There was no protection from the cold winds. Most of the cliff dwellings face south or south-west from the cold north wind. Another reason people did not live on the mesa is that there were more and more people to feed. Homes on the mesa would use land that was needed to grow food. Some people say a third reason was for safety. They say different groups of Ancestral Puebloans were fighting each other. The cliff dwellings were hard to get into. so they kept the people who lived there safe. Other people don't believe it. They say the groups tract ed too much to have seen fighting. Everyone agrees that these people were the skillful builders, who used every bit of space in the cliffs to make their homes.

For years, scientists have been researching how exposing(暴露) humans to nature may improve their physical and mental health. People are encouraged to visit forests and grow houseplants. Now researchers are also testing whether we can get some of the same benefits from experiencing nature in VR(虚拟现实).

Scientists are trying to understand what exactly about nature makes a real difference in health results. One tool that might help is VR, says Hector Alvarez, who wanted to find out if simply seeing nature can relax people. In an experiment, VR allowed him to expose people to the visual(视觉的) experience of nature while controlling temperature, light and air pollution. He is now preparing to publish his research.

People can feel safe faster in environments with lots of plants, Hector explains. "That's why I was interested in VR. If it is right that we feel safe faster in nature, it should bring your stress levels down. "

So far, Hector says, research shows there are some health improvements by experiencing nature in VR. However, they are smaller than those got in the real nature.

Gretchen Daily is an environmental scientist at Stanford University. She agrees at parts of this research, especially in situations without nature. But in the long term, connection with nature in the real world can not be replaced. To some degree, Gretchen worries that the idea might take off that VR can replace the real thing. "If that's taken very far, that' ll be really harmful overall because the real thing is necessary in so many ways, " she says. "We just cannot live on a dead planet. "
