Last weekend John went camping with his parents and his sister, Mary. They took a tent, sleeping bags, water and food. They arrived at the campsite at about three on Saturday afternoon. First they went cycling along thelake for more than two hours. When it was getting dark, they returned and began to enjoy their dinner. Everything tasted delicious.

    Soon it was time to put up the tent. John helped Dad pull the tent out of the bag. Then, they found there were no poles (杆子) to hold it up.

    "Oh," cried John. "I forgot to bring the poles. What could we do?"

    Dad looked up at the sky. There were many stars in the sky. The night was clear and the air was warm.

    "It's OK," Dad said. "We don't even need a tent." He put the sleeping bags on the ground.

    They slept well that night. The sun was shining on them when they woke up the next morning.

    "It is my best camping trip," said John.

    In schools all over the world lots of boys and girls are learning foreign languages.

    There are thousands of languages in the world. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} It is used not only in England and the USA, but also in the other parts of the world.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} We should remember how we all learned our own language when we were children. If we could learn a second language in the same way, it would not seem so difficult. Think of what a small child does. He listens to what people say, and he tries to copy what he hears. When he wants something, he has to ask for it. He is using the language, talking in it and thinking in it all the time. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    It is important to remember, also, that we learn our own language by hearing people speak it, not by seeing what they write. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} In school, though you learn to read and write as well as to hear and speak, it is best to learn all new words by ear. You can read them, spell them and write them later.

    There is a National Health Service in Britain. People usually call it "the NHS". When people are ill, they can get free treatment（治疗）. ① The government pays for the treatment. In Britain everyone has a local doctor. The local doctor is a general practitioner (全科医生)(GP). A GP is a doctor who treats patients with all kinds of illness. He may not have specialists (专家) usually work in hospitals.

    If a man is ill and wants to see his doctor, he calls to make an appointment first. If he is too ill and he can't go out, his doctor will come to his house. If the patient has to take medicine, the doctor gives him a prescription(处方). ② The patient has to pay some money for the prescription. He goes to the chemist's shop and buys the medicine there. The price is the same as any kind of medicine. ③But children, students, old people or people without work don't have to pay for their medicine

    When I just moved to Los Angeles（洛杉矶）, I didn't have a car.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}, but I wanted to prove（证明）them wrong.

    I asked my neighbor, Mrs. White, to take me to the bus station in the center of the city, so I could try taking the bus home.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}. When I got there, I went inside and got a bus timetable（时刻表）. I looked at the map and worked out that I needed to take three buses to get home.

    I bought the tickets and went outside to wait at the bus stop for the Number 8 bus. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. I gave my ticket to the bus driver and took a seat. At the right stop I got off. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. I waited and waited. A man was also waiting for the same bus. He said that it wasn't unusual for the bus to be late. Half an hour later, it finally came. To make the matter worse, the third bus broke down halfway and the driver had to fix it. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. So when I finally got home, I was very tired. Maybe getting a car in Los Angeles wasn't such a bad idea!
