①" Class, this is John Evans, " Mrs. Parmele introduced him to us, trying to give him a warm welcome. We saw a boy in old clothes. John looked around and smiled, hoping somebody would smile back. Nobody did. He kept on smiling anyway. I held my breath as Mrs. Parmele looked around the classroom, hoping she wouldn't notice the empty desk next to mine. She did, and pointed him at that desk. He looked over at me as he sat down, but I looked away. 

②By the end of his first week, John was at the bottom of our class. I told my mother one evening at dinner, " He even doesn't know how to count. " However, as I ate lunch with him the next day and listened to him, I realized that it was pleasant to be with him. After lunch, I decided that I would be John's friend. 

③One night, as Mother came into my bedroom, I said, " Mom, tomorrow is John's birthday, and he's not going to get anything. Nobody cares. "" Don't worry, " Mom said as she kissed me goodnight. "I'm sure everything will be fine. "

④I wished John a happy birthday in the morning, and his smile showed me that he was glad I had remembered. By mid- afternoon I had almost decided that birthdays weren't that important. Then, as Mrs. Parmele was writing on the blackboard, I heard a familiar(熟悉的) voice singing the birthday song. I looked up and saw Mother coming through the door with a tray(托盘) of cupcakes and a present in her hand. Mrs. Parmele also joined in. Mother found John looking like a rabbit in car headlights. She put the cupcakes and the gift on John's desk and said, " Happy birthday, John. " John stood there with his mouth open, unable to believe what was happening. While John ha ppily shared his cupcakes with the class, taking the tray from desk to desk, I caught Mother watching me and she smiled. 

⑤John Evans moved away soon, and I never heard from him again. But I always remember the happiness in a boy's eyes, and the taste of the sweetest cupcake. 

①Celebrating the New Year happens in every country. But each country has its own way of celebrating it. 

②Chinese people celebrate the New Year twice(两次). One is on 1st January and the other is in January or February. People have many activities to celebrate the New Year, like watching lion dances or having a family dinner. 

③People in Thailand(泰国) celebrate it by pouring(泼) water on friends and visitors. They think this will bring much rain in the next growing season. Their New Year is usually in April or May. It is very hot at that time of a year in Thailand. 

④In Switzerland(瑞士), people often sing in the ice and snow world to celebrate the New Year. In parts of Switzerland, people celebrate it by dressing up to walk from farmhouse to farmhouse. They jump up and down to make the cow bells ring. They hope this will sweep away the bad luck of the old year. 

⑤People all over the world have a great time on New Year's Day.

1. This is my room. It's tidy, isn't it? My bed is by the window and my desk is next to the bed. On the desk is a computer. I often watch news on it. It's fun. What's on the bookshelf? Some books, of course. And my red model car is on it, too. 

2. Next to my room is my sisters' room. I have two sisters. They are Kate and Gina. They are very different. Kate is tidy, but Gina is not. Gina's books are everywhere—on her bed, on the sofa and under the chair. Her white model plane is under the desk. "Where's my ruler? Where are my keys?" She always asks. 

3. This is my parents' room. You can see a green plant in it. My mother often waters it. There is a big window in the room and on the wall is an old photo of my parents. My father likes blue very much, so their pillow and quilt are blue. It's a nice room. Do you think so?

 There are twelve months in a year and my favourite month is June.

 June 1 st is Children's Day. On that day, my mother often buys some beautiful things for me. There are also some interesting activities in June at school. On the 12th, we have a ping-pong game. Ping-pong is my favourite sport. I think it's fun. I like playing it with my friends and watching ping-pong games on TV. On June 21s', we have a school trip. We will go to the West Lake. I think we can have fun there.

 School Day is great, too. We have it on June 26th. On that day, my parents can come to my school, too. My birthday is also in June. I always have a birthday party and invite my friends to my home.

Jess Bhamra is the 18-year-old daughter of an Indian family in London. Jules Paxton is the same age and the daughter of an English family. Jess is crazy about football, but because she's a girl, she isn't allowed to play. Sometimes she plays in the park with some boys and one day, Jules, who also plays football, sees Jess playing. They get on really well and Jules invites Jess to try out for the local women's football team coached by Joe. When he sees how good Jess is, Joe puts her in the team. When Jess's parents find out that she's been playing football without their knowing, they make her stop.

The team gets to an important final. Unfortunately, the final is on the same day as Jess's sister's wedding. Joe asks Mr Bhamra to let Jess play, but he refuses. However, her father notices how sad Jess is. So halfway through the wedding, he lets Jess go and she rushes to the game!

When she shows up, there are only thirty minutes left and her team are losing 1-0. Soon, the score is 1-1, and when there's a free kick, Jess has to bend the ball around the other team's players to score. She makes it, and the team wins!

A university in California offers soccer scholarships(奖学金) to Jess and Jules. Jess finally convinces her parents to let her go. Jess and Jules set off for America and both of them become top players in their team. Their parents feel proud because they make their dreams come true.
