You must have read or heard of the sad love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. But can you imagine the two singing opera in English instead of speaking poetic Chinese?

Jia and Lin are two characters from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions (《红楼梦》), written by Cao Xueqin (1715-1763). Now the book has been made into an English-language opera. After being performed in San Francisco, US, the performance came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan in 2017. 

Many of the opera's creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American cultures, including the director and playwrights (剧作家). Their understanding of both cultures helped them change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera. 

The book, which covers the rise and fall of the Jia family, has 120 chapters and hundreds of characters. But opera writer David Henry Hwang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Hwang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin and tried to write a heartbreaking tragedy that everyone would understand. 

The art director Timmy Yip, from Hong Kong, tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes and stage settings. He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin showed up on stage, there was usually water around her on the stage. 

The creators considered it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese classic to Westen audiences. Hwang told China Daily he was happy to "have made a contribution to the land where my parents were born."

In 2023, a group of the young drew much attention in their different fields. They have become role models for young Chinese by showing how excellent and active they are. Here are the stories of three of them.

Chinese writer Hai Ya's The Space-Time Painter won an important prize on Oct 21st. He is the third Chinese writer to win this prize. Hai Ya was born in the 1990s. His work mixes history and science. The Space-TimePainter, for example, tells us a story of a painter called Zhao Ximeng. 

15-year-old Chen Yujie won the 100-meter event at the second U15 Gymnasiade (世界中学生运动会) in August. Chen often takes hard training all day and all night. Although it makes her painful sometimes, she says, "I get used to the training and it gives me the chance to realize my dream. I will keep on running!"

On Dec 21st, the members of Shenzhou XVII carried out their first spacewalk outside the Tiangong space station. Among them, Tang Shengjie who was born in 1989 set a new record by becoming the youngest Chinese astronaut (宇航员) to have a spacewalk. "It's the highest honor (荣誉) for me." he said in an interview with Xinhua.

Tom is an English boy. He is from London. He likes China very much and speaks a little Chinese, He is a student in No. 17 Middle School. He is in Class 2. His sister, Kate is in No. 8 Middles School. She is in Class 4. Wang Lan and Wang Pin are his classmates. They often help Tom with his Chinese and Tom helps them to learn English.

Today, Tom has two new classmates. They are Lucy and Lily. They come from the USA. They are twins (双胞胎) . They look the same. They are twelve. But Tom is not well and he is not at school. Wang Lan and Wang Pin look after Lucy and Lily. They are all friends.

I'm Karol, a 19- year- old student from Honduras. For me, volunteering has been like a school of life where I' ve learned a lot about myself . When I was 13, I started my volunteer work by{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(修理) bikes. In the neighborhood, I took {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(无论什么) action was needed to help others.

 Then one day, a local woman, Amelia. asked me {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (回复) to her daughter. She couldn't complete it because she was {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(不能做某事的) to read and write. Her daughter was studying {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(在国外) in an eastern country for years, so Amelia missed her very much. In the letter, she told her daughter that she was better after the {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(手术) , which made her daughter not so worried." Thank you for helping me. It's you who came to help me to do it." Her words made me realize the importance of my work.

 Later I {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(继续) to help people in need after I joined a worldwide volunteering organization at 17. The experience has influenced me deeply because all the people I've met there have taught me how to learn from others and work together to finish {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(任务). I have learned the meaning of" being together" after seeing so many people try their best to build a better world.

 In my {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(看法) , to be a volunteer has been like a rebirth for me. It's{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(必要的) than ever for us to realize that a tiny step can make a big difference.

On a sunny afternoon, we decided to visit a place where nature' s beauty spread out like a colorful blanket. As we walked through the gates, we couldn't help but notice how the flowers and greenery attracted everyone's {#blank#}1{#/blank#}（注意). The grass was green and the flowers {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (闻) sweet.

It was more than just a relaxing afternoon ; it was an experience that left us with {#blank#}9{#/blank#} （回忆) that would last a lifetime. And we couldn't help but feel a deeper connection to the lay, create, what, make mistakes, be similar to {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (传统) of our town.We can also raise money for the homeless. 

I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt's house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the1 then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at 2 .

I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact,I think I 3 very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see— the 4 and magical places that I had never been to.

 The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism(乐观),5 the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost— having to study in three schools as a result of 6 moves. I 7 knew what I should be. Mother 8 , and I had got a stepfather(继父), so things became even more difficult for me. I was often in 9 , and saw no end to"the hard times".

 My responsibilities(责任心) in the family 10 a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with immigration(移民) officers, took my grandparents to the doctor, and even 11 telephone bills with the telephone company.

 From my 12 I have learned one important rule: almost all troubles finally13 ! Something good is certain to happen 14 the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that 15 .
