XBOX 360 Kinetic, RoboSapien, WiiParty, theseare just a few of the modern toys sold in recent years. But some of the most populartoys are actually quite old.

Gameshave been around for thousands of years. In 4000 B. C, Babylonians played a boardgame that was similar to chess. Yo-yos made of stone were first used in ancientGreece around 1000 B C. And kites appeared in China around the same time.

Another famous game is Scrabble. It was inventedby an architect in the 1930s, but it didn't get popular until 1953 And since then, more than 100 million sets have been sold worldwide.

As you can imagine, toys and games are a multi-billion-dollarindustry. Mr. Potato Head, the first toy advertised on TV, grossed more than $4million in its first year. Play-Doh made its inventor Joseph McVicker a millionaireby his 27th birthday, while Mattel sells 1. 5 million Barbie dolls each week (that'stwo dolls each second!).

Some toys go out of fashion, but then becomepopular again, such as Rubik's Cube. Research says parents are increasingly choosingto buy toys they remember from their own childhood.

These days, toys are not just for fun. RoboSapienis a remote-controlled robot that was launched in 2004. He can walk, turn aroundand do other poses. RoboSapien was designed by Mark Tilden, who once created robotsfor NASA space missions. He expected the toy to be used mostly by and scientists, but almost 2 million RoboSapiens have been sold worldwide since its launch as atoy?

Maybe you have known much about the Amazon Rainforest, but there are some other forests in the world that play a significant role in keeping the balance of the Earth's ecosystem. Let's take a look.

No.1①    ▲

Found in Southeast Alaska and spreading about 26,560 square miles, the Tongass National Forest is the largest national forest in the United States and the largest temperate rainforest(温带雨林) in North America. That means it holds almost a third of the Earth's old-growth temperate rainforests, which are particularly important due to its high levels of stored carbon (碳)and energy.

No.2②    ▲

Located in Yunnan Province in Southwest China, Xishuangbanna Tropical Rainforest has been listed as an official UNESCO biosphere reserve(生态圈保护区)since 1990.

Spreading about 936 square miles, the forest supports a large number of rare and endangered species, including 90% of China's entire wild Asian elephant population.

No.3③    ▲

As one of the oldest forests in the world, Daintree Rainforest in Australia is believed to be over 135 million years old. At 463 square miles in size, Daintree Rainforest contains over half of the country's bat and butterfly species, helping it serve as an important source of pollination(授粉)for the rest of the region.

No.4④    ▲

The 40-square-mile Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is one of the most popular bird watching destinations in the world. Monteverde is also home to jaguars, pumas, several species of monkeys, and colorful red-eyed tree frogs.

 阅读下面材料,然后从各题所给的四个选项中选出一个最佳选项。

A marathon is a long running race of 26. 2 miles(42. 195 kilometres). The first Olympic Marathon was held in Athens. Now,many cities host their own marathons every year. Some of the best-known marathons around the world are the New York City Marathon,the Boston Marathon and the Tokyo Marathon. Among them, the Boston Marathon which started in 1897, is the oldest yearly marathon in the world. As time goes by, the sport has become more than just a race.

Themes of marathons add fun and meaning to the hard miles. Runners run for helping sick kids, celebrating important events, or just enjoying nature. There is a famous marathon in Gisborne, New Zealand, which is known for being the first city in the world to welcome the sunlight every day. Runners can greet the sunrise as they race along the golden sandy beaches.

Marathon routes(路线) bring people more understanding of the old sport. Some routes provide great sporting challenges for runners. The routes offer various surfaces, from bridges to sand to hills. Runners of all skill levels can sweat freely and push their limits in the race. Some routes are well planned for runners to explore the many sides of a city. For example, the route of the Great Wall Marathon takes the runners along the great wonder of the world. The race can be an amazing chance to get to know Beijing, its people and local food.

A marathon is quite a journey for runners to enjoy the run, challenge themselves and experience the culture. There is so much more behind the race for us to explore.

 阅读下面材料,从方框中所给的 A—E五个选项中选择正确的选项(其中一项是多余选项),将其序号填入第1—4 题,并回答第5题。
