There are some differences between American English and British English. Some differences are quite interesting.

When my friend Lily from London used the word "larder", I didn't know what it meant. Realizing I didn't follow her, she used another word. I finally knew she wanted to find something to keep some food. The next word came up when we were planning a lunch date. She jotted down the date and time in her diary, while I wrote it down on my calendar. If she called me on the phone, she would ring me up. But if the line was busy, she would say the line was engaged. She once told me a funny story about a pissed woman. I wondered what had made the lady angry. It turns out that pissed means drunk.

Most times, I could understand what Lily meant until last week I read a message written from Lily to me. I found out the British really like the letter"u"and have kept it in many words. However, we Americans have dropped it. Somewhere in our language history, we decided that "neighbor", "color" and "favorite" were just fine without "u" next to the "o".

Here is one more example. While I was in London for the first time last year, I lost my watch. When I asked my British friend what time it was, he said aloud as "a quarter to seven", which made me speechless and lost in thought. After a few seconds, I finally realized it was "six forty-five". Equally, 6:15 for us is translated as "six fifteen", while the British would say "a quarter past six". Although the differences between American and British English sometimes make me confused（困惑的）, it's really fun to explore more of them from my own experience.

①Smile! A smile is the most fascinating part of your face. But sometimes you don't want to smile. Why? Because your teeth are crooked (不整齐的)? Have you seen some kids with a mouthful of metal? These are called braces. Today, doctors can work wonders with your teeth. Just as you go to a doctor with an upset stomach or an eye doctor to test your eyes, your teeth also needs attention and care.

②Teeth help in eating. Crooked teeth will not allow you to chew food properly, so some unchewed food will go down to your stomach. Besides, crooked teeth are difficult to clean and hurt the gums (牙龈). Space between the teeth is also dangerous. Sometimes food get stuck between the teeth. If you do not take it out with a normal brushing, they may do great harm to the teeth.

③The best time to solve the problem is when you are a child and your teeth haven't completely set. It may be from 8 to 14 years of age. By 12 or 13 years of age or so, the milk teeth falls out and permanent teeth come in. It is also at this age that the jaw (下巴) is growing. As a child is growing, his jaws is still weak and reshaping is easier.

④The dentist corrects the teeth by spreading your mouth with braces so that the teeth fit in correctly in its place. Putting pressure to the jaw makes the jaw grow in the direction of the pull.Putting braces helps change the shape of your jaw.

⑤Teeth can be corrected at any age. However, as you get older it takes longer time and hurts more. The older you are, the more painful it gets as the jaws and permanent teeth have set.

Trains are great for getting around cities and traveling long distances (距离). Here are some of the world's fastest trains.

⑤What if astronauts miss their families? There is special communication equipment in the space station. Astronauts can have personal "sky-to-earth" calls with their families. Usually, the astronauts wear earphones. It not only helps them talk with each other, but also allows them to talk to the ground from any position（位置）.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a great book. It is more than an adventure story. Mark Twain wrote it in 1876. It describes people's lives in the southern states of America at that time. It tells how young people grow, how people love each other and {#blank#}8{#/blank#}bad people pay for their actions. It is written{#blank#}9{#/blank#} everyday English, and the dialogues sound especially real. Today, it is still read and loved by people all over the world, and it is{#blank#}10{#/blank#} to be one of the greatest American stories.
