Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One time in the middle of the night, an old lady in her 80s1 my taxi. She gave me an address, and then asked: "Could you drive through downtown?"

"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.

"Oh, I don't2 ," she said. "I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice (临终关怀医院).

I don't have any family left. The doctor says I don't have very long."

I  3  shut off the meter (里程表).

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She  4  me the building where she had worked, the neighborhood where she and her husband had once lived, the place where she danced as

a girl. As the sun was rising, we got to the hospice.

"How much should I pay you?" she asked, reaching into her purse (钱包).

"5 ," I said.

"You have to make a living," she answered.

"There are other6 ."

"You gave an old woman a little moment of7 ," she said. "Thank you."

I drove into the fine morning light. 8  me, a door shut. It was the sound of the9  of a life. I drove aimlessly (漫无目的地), lost in thought. For the rest of the day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had got a(n) 10  driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift (换班)? What if I had refused to take the run?

Westwood National Park is a very huge national park. It is well-known {#blank#}1{#/blank#} its fascinating scenes and many kinds of animals, especially bears. It is one of my favorite {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (place) to take photos.

I will never forget that afternoon. Birds flew over the {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (peace) lake. The mountains {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (cover) with white snow. With the camera held to my eye, I was recording the amazing picture. All of a sudden, I found two baby bears far away running after each other {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (happy). Sometimes they stopped to look around; sometimes one rubbed (蹭) against the other's back. They had a lot of fun playing in {#blank#}6{#/blank#} sun. At that moment, I completely lost myself in the sweet environment. How I wished that time could stand still! I really hoped {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (catch) the warm scene with my camera and I did it. After a while, I {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (hear) a loud roar (吼叫) from the mother bear. The two baby bears stood up quickly {#blank#}9{#/blank#} ran back to the forest. I was so lucky that I could take such a picture.

The photo always reminds {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (I) that the real beauty is "nature" in nature.

 What sports do you like doing? Are you in any of your school's teams? If yes, how did you make it?

I did not pass the boys' basketball tryouts (预选赛) in seventh grade. Making the team was very important to me, but my name was not on the list. On the way home, I was both angry and sad."I can't believe I didn't make the team,"I said loudly." How did Alex make the team? He can't catch up with a tortoise(乌龟)! Why is Jimmy a better choice than me? He just stands around moving his arms!"" Adam!" my mom said, cutting me off." Why don't you just stop and think? Maybe you need a little more practice."

 Suddenly(突然地),I knew she was right. It was nobody's fault(错误) but my own. I decided to work hard for the team over the next year. I practiced hard every day and had lessons every week. When summer came, I joined lots of basketball camps. Through camp after camp, my abilities(能力) grew, and I knew I was ready for tryouts in the fall.

 The day finally came. As everyone crowded around the lists, I played it cool and waited for my chance to read the names. I slowly looked down the list. Not only did I make it on the list, but my name was the very first!

John and Robert Taylor are brothers. They are always close to each other. They just {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(完成) the school bike {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(比赛). Though(即使) they didn't win, they smiled happily. To John and Robert, winning is not the most important thing. 

Robert cannot move at all and has to stay at home because of a {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(严重的) {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(疾病). So he often feels lonely. He wants to play with other kids. 

One day, after seeing Robert's sad face, John found a way to {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(解决) this problem. He put Robert in a trailer. Then he {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(拉；扯) it along with his bike. 

The brothers often take part in races together. John {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(拒绝) to race without his brother. They enjoy the time together. "We are family,"John says. 

The {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(结果) doesn't really {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(重要) for the Taylor brothers. The love between them is the most important and it {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(给……提供动力) their bike. 

This is my second day in the new school in the new country. 

There will be no lessons today because we are going to somewhere by train. On the train, the students know each other, but they don't know me and I don't know them. I can't understand them when they speak, and I can't speak to them. I don't know their language at all. 

Suddenly, the girl who sits next to me smiles and points to herself. "Anna, " she says. She points to me, "Farah!"I nod and say, "Farah. " Then I look across the field, aimlessly. 

We stop at a place with many apple trees. I find out we are to pick the fruit. Our teacher tells each student to pick one apple. 

When I am wandering around, I find a tree, shorter than the others. It is small and alone, like me. A few hard green apples in its branches. I twist one off and it fits perfectly in my hand. 

After a while, we all pick our apples and run to a little crooked house at the bottom of the hill. They have a machine that chop(切碎) the apples there. 

One by one we put our apples into the machine. I will be last to put my small green one. Then the students begin to push on the handle. It must be very hard. 

I hang back, not sure if I should be with the others. But I am strong. I can help. So, I take a step towards them. At this time, Ann a waves to me to come beside her. A boy quickly makes a place for me between them. It is hard, but we are working together and we can do it. I am pleased. 

The juice drips down. And we all taste it. I do think I taste my special apple. 

On the way back to school, Ann a sits next to me again on the train. There is a boy on my other side, smiling at me. Jim pats his stomach, and a belch(打嗝声) jumps from his throat. Everyone laughs. I do too. 

Laughs sound the same as at home. So do belches and lots of things. It is the words that are strange. But soon I will know their words. I will blend with the others the way my apple blended with the apple juice. 

I take a deep breath and try to learn their language, saying "App-ell". Anna claps. I smile. It is my first outside-myself word. There will be more. 

Henry is going through a very hard time. His wife just passed away(去世). They always loved and cared about each other, so he feels hopeless and sad about everything in his life. For months, Henry sits in his house, doing nothing.

One of Henry's neighbours, an old woman named Lisa, sees him from her yard one day. She doesn't see him outside in days! Then she asks him to come closer to the fence(篱笆) next to her house.

"Hello, Henry! A nice day, isn't it? Just look at this fence. It is falling apart. You are a strong man. Can you help me fix(修补) this fence?" Lisa asks.

Henry is actually angry inside. He is the one who needs help right now. He thinks the old lady is rude. But she is old and cannot fix the fence herself, so he agrees.

Henry works on the fence for days. When he finishes, she thanks him. Henry smiles for the first time in months.

"What a wonderful job you have done! Could you please paint it for me?" Lisa says to him.

Henry cannot believe she is asking for more help. "Why does she ask for another job? What I need now is rest, not work," he says to himself. Anyway, he agrees again. Every day he works hard painting the fence in the hot sun. As their neighbours pass by, they all tell Henry what a beautiful job he has done. Hearing this, Henry feels quite happy.

Several days later, Henry feels that life is still hopeful. He finally understands that Lisa isn't being rude. She knows that staying busy can help people forget their sorrow. So she keeps asking him for help to make him get busy. He helped her, but she truly saved him.
