People usually think volunteering is just for adults and it seems hard for students like us. But it is different in Canada. The government encourages people of any age to volunteer in public and work for the whole society. If students want to graduate from high school, thirty hours of volunteering is required, if students want to get into a well - known university, it helps if they do a lot to society. Volunteering is an important factor (因素) that universities will take into consideration.

    Furthermore, there are volunteer chances everywhere. People can find information about how to volunteer posted in the library or on the Internet. It includes different jobs, such as taking care of small kids or doing some cleaning in a neighborhood. Students can choose what they want to do.

    I got my first volunteering job in New Westminster Museum every Sunday from 9:30 am to 11: 30 am. My job is to proofread(校对) the documents on a computer and correct mistakes. The museum is about the history of the Irving Family, a historically important family in New Westminster. At first, I was nervous to communicate with others. But as time passed, I became more open. During volunteering, I not only learned how to work with other volunteers, but also learned a lot of history about New Westminster. As a volunteer, I am proud of myself.

49-year-old Zhang Jianna is from a village in Hebei Province. Recently, videos of her directing foreigners have gone viral (爆红) online. Her beautiful English has deeply impressed the viewers. Zhang had worked as a restaurant server and a store seller. More than 10 years ago, she took on the role of a cleaner in the embassy (大使馆) area of Sanlitun in Beiiing's Chaovang district.

While others rested, she memorized vocabulary and practiced speaking. Upon arriving home after work, she would note down new knowledge points and review them until fully understood. Over the years, she filled over a dozen notebooks with her notes. She reviewed words at night and then repeated them one more time the next day morning. She also downloaded over a dozen English learning apps on her computer and phone, spending any possible moment learning and practicing.

"Growing up in a village without a college education, I sometimes feared being looked down upon. But every time I help a stranger in English, I feel strongly confident," said Zhang. "To serve others makes me happy and it's where I prove my self-worth. After retirement, I also want to introduce my hometown in English and help develop local tourism ."

When I was told that my family decided to move from the only home that I had ever known, I ran into the garden and sat alone, crying, as tears were from my heart. Suddenly I felt a hand rest on my shoulder. It was my grandfather. 

"It isn't easy, is it, Billy?" he said softly, sitting down on the steps beside me. 

"Grandpa, "I replied through my tears, "how can I ever say goodbye to you and all my friends?"

"Goodbye is such a sad word, " he said. "Although we seem to have so many ways of saying goodbye, they all have one thing in common: sadness. "

Then he gently took my hand in his and took me to his favourite place in the garden, where a huge red rose bush(玫瑰丛) grew alone. 

"What do you see here, Billy?" he asked.

A year and a half later, my grandfather became badly ill. When he returned from the hospital, the family members were summoned(召集). It was time for the family members to say their goodbyes. 

When it came to my turn, I realised how tired he looked. His eyes were closed, and his breathing(呼吸) was slow and hard. I took his hand as gently as he had once taken mine. 

"Hello, Grandpa, "I said. His eyes slowly opened. 

"Hello, my friend, " he said, with a smile. 

I'm Richard. I am very happy to have this chance to improve my English and make friends at the same time. 

During the last holiday, my parents took me to America for two weeks. They hoped that through this trip, I could realise(意识到) that language learning was important. After that, I really knew the importance of the language, so I wanted to join this club. I hope I can improve myself here. 

First, I always feel nervous when speaking in front of my classmates. I hope I can feel less nervous after joining the club. Next, I'd like to learn more about foreign cultures. A language often represents(代表) the culture behind the country. When I travelled to foreign countries, I experienced culture shock. Everyone can be surprised by foreign cultures. So it's meaningful for us to learn more about other cultures.
