The fourth Thursday of November is American Thanksgiving Day. It's a holiday in the US. Usually, family members and friends get together for a dinner. American Thanks-giving Day began in 1621. When the first English settlers reached the New World in 1620, they did not have enough food. But the American Indians helped the white men and taught them how to farm. The next year, in autumn, they had a good harvest. They were so happy. They thanked Indian friends for their help and thanked God.

    Dave is a clerk of a company. He has trouble getting to sleep at night. He goes to see his doctor. And the doctor gives him some extra—strong sleeping pills (安眠药). On Tuesday night Dave takes the pills, sleeps well and awake before he hears the alarm clock. He gets to the office on time, walks in and says to his boss, "I'm OK. I have no trouble getting up this morning." "That's fine." the boss roars, "but where were you on Wednesday and Thursday?"

    It is March 12th. It's Tree Planting Day. There are many people on the hills. They're planting trees. People plant many trees today. Plants are important to us. They can make food from the air, water and sunlight. But animals and people can't do so. Animals and people can get food from plants. Without plants, life will not go on, Plants make the air clean, they can keep water from flowing away(流失). They can stop wind from blowing up sand and earth. But in some places people are cutting down too many trees. This brings floods(洪水) and sandstorm(沙暴). Now more and more people know that plants are important. They will plant more trees and grow more plants. They will try to protect the trees.
