I did volunteer(志愿者) work in a Kenya orphanage(孤儿院)last year. It was an unforgettable experience.

When I first went to Kenya1 my classmates, I saw many poor children. I was2 that we might have to live like them. I was right. We had to sleep in a very3 room—18 girls stayed together. As there was not enough4, we had to save it day and night. We only had five minutes to have a bath each time.

5 the living environment was bad, we did many things to help children there, such as teaching and cleaning. The most difficult thing for me was taking care of babies who were less than year old. That was the first time I held a baby. It was not6 at all. The babies kept7 no matter what I did. When I fed them, they still didn't calm down(平静下来). After a while, I was so8 from the pain(疼痛)in my back and shoulders. I realized how much my parents did for me when I was young.

When we were9, a 5-year-old girl gave her teddy bear to us. It was her Christmas gift.

Seeing her smiling face and the clean orphanage, we felt10 of ourselves.

语法填空

When I was in school, I volunteered to work in a hospital for some time.

On one visit, I carefully entered a dark room  {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(find) an elderly man lying in bed. I firstly thought he was sleeping. When I moved much  {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(close), however, I realised he was very much awake. He wanted to communicate something,   {#blank#}3{#/blank#}I couldn't make sense of what he was saying. He seemed quite weak, and I couldn't tell if he  {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(be) in pain or just frightened. I knew nothing  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}him, and I felt totally helpless. He clearly didn't want me to leave him, but I felt so lost and uncomfortable that I had to leave the room after only a couple of  {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(minute).

The next time I was at  {#blank#}7{#/blank#}same hospital and saw him again, he immediately said,"I remember you. You gave me hope in my darkest hour that evening!"I was so  {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(surprise) that I didn't know how to answer.

In the short moment of  {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(I)staying there, I did nothing at all. But surprisingly he found something he needed in me, just  {#blank#}10{#/blank#} I was there.

I have thought about this thing often over the past years. It makes me want to offer whatever kindness I can to others, and I try to make it out and appreciate (欣赏) it.

As the powerful singing voice of 71-year-old Liu Aibang echoes( 回 荡 ) across the classroom, students control shadow puppets (皮影木偶) with thin straight pieces of wood, making them step onto the "stage"—a cloth screen provided with light from behind. Those sitting in front of the stage play music on drums, suona and other instruments.

This is a Daoqing Shadow Puppetry class at Longdong University. Besides Liu. the other performers of the show are all college students. Starting in the Han Dynasty, Daoqing Shadow Puppetry has been included in the national intangible cultural heritage list(非物质文化遗产名单) since 2006.

However, with technologies becoming more and more popular, many performers moved on to other jobs. Faced with the choice between protecting this art and making a good living, Liu chose to stay on.

One day in 2020, Liu got a phone call from Zhao Zhixue, the director of the music school at Longdong University. Zhao told him that the school planned to introduce Daoqing Shadow Puppetry into college classrooms. "We want to develop young students'long-term interest in intangible cultural heritage, "said Zhao.

Excited by the news, Liu became a part-time teacher at the college. He came to school twice a week, teaching a two-hour class each time. Liu hopes to train more young people. "Just as true love is not a one-man show, the inheritance(传承) of cultural heritage needs efforts from both the old and the young, "Liu said.
