I have been in the teaching profession for more than thirty years, and one of the best teachers I have ever known is Mr. Rowe. I was lucky enough to teach fourth grade together with him.

Mr. Rowe had endless patience and understanding and I learned so much from watching him. He could perform miracles, like the one he performed with Steven, one of the unhappiest kids I had ever seen. Steven couldn't stand school. He didn't like being picked last for kickball. He didn't like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly, he didn't like himself.

The first day he walked into Mr. Rowe's classroom, he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of textbooks onto the floor.

Mr. Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven's shoulder, but Steven pulled away. Nevertheless, Mr. Rowe welcomed him: "Hi, Steven. I'm happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year." Steven looked around the room as if Mr. Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom.

So, while Mr. Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school, it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.

That day after classes, Mr. Rowe chose Steven to pitch (投球) the kickball at recess. "Hey, Steven," Mr. Rowe commented, "You are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret trick." Mr. Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could perform. Steven learned fast and did quite well! Everyone cheered for him!

After the kickball, Steven sat as close to Mr. Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked, Steven lit up; when he knew the answer, he raised his hand; when he answered the question, his voice shook. However, he got the answer right! He said, with Mr. Rowe, his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful.

That is not to say that every day went smoothly, but it was obvious that Steven grew to love Mr. Rowe more and more with each passing day.

There was something in the elderly woman's grace that caught my eye. Although slow and unsure of her steps, the woman moved with deliberation (从容), and there was no hesitation in her gestures.

It was a few years ago, and I had taken a part - time holiday - season job in a video store at the local shopping mall. From inside the store, I could see the people outside rushing by.

The elderly woman entered the store, along with her daughter, who was displaying a serious case of impatience, rolling her eyes, sighing and checking her watch every few seconds. I guessed if she had possessed a rope, she would have fastened it to her mother to drag her along to keep step with the rush of other shoppers.

The elderly woman separated from her daughter and began to seek through the DVDs on the nearest shelf. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title written on an old piece of paper.

Rather than rush off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it. Looking back, I thought I wanted to enjoy her company for a moment.

Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who'd passed away the previous Christmas. I missed my mom and still felt regretful about the moments when I'd used my impatience to make her life unhappy.

As we walked along the back of the store, I introduced its floor plan: old television shows, action movies, cartoons, science fiction. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation.

We found the DVD and she thanked me, saying that it was the one she'd enjoyed when she was her daughter's age. Unwillingly, I accompanied her to the cash register, realizing I had to return the elderly woman to her daughter, who was still tapping her foot at the front of the store.

Paragraph 1: As the elderly woman was waiting in the queue at the cash register, I walked over to her daughter.

Paragraph 2: Together they made their way toward the store's exit.

On February 4, while working on a construction site in Gratiot County, Michigan, Hansen heard terrified screams coming from nearby. He stopped his work and looked up. Standing on the back porch(门廊) of the home next door was a little boy yelling "Help!" while four fierce dogs barked madly in a circle below him.

At first, Hansen thought it was just a dog fight. Then alarm bells went off in his head. "The noises they made sounded like what dogs do when they're killing something," he says. His thought proved right when another young boy suddenly popped up in the middle of the dogs, and Hansen watched in horror as they sank in their teeth and threw him across the grass like a small doll.

"He was shirtless and covered in blood, and those dogs were trying to kill him." says Hansen.

Hansen raced across the grass, jumped the fence, and landed in the neighbor's yard. He shouted at the dogs, but they ignored him. Then he displayed the most aggression that he could manage, yelling louder until they let go just long enough for Hansen to catch eight-year-old Ethan Nokes around the stomach and bear-hug him. "I couldn't hold him under his armpits(腋窝), which would have made it easier to run, because they were torn wide open," says Hansen.

As Hansen dashed across the yard, the dogs bounced on him, biting at Ethan. Hansen rushed onto the steps. So did the dogs. When he reached the top, he pulled on a door; it wouldn't open. "A dog grabbed Ethan's foot, and I thought they were going to get him back from me," he says.

It was an ordinary weekend. The supermarket was crowded with shopping their weekly groceries. I was no exception, purchasing fresh produce and a few comfort food items, and then I reached the checkout line. As the cashier scanned my items and I reached for my wallet, my heart sank. It was missing. No cash, no cards, just an empty pocket and a growing sense of panic.

"I'm so sorry, "I stammered(结结巴巴地说), my face burning red as I began to gather my groceries, ready to make my embarrassed retreat.

But a calm voice from behind interrupted my retreat. " No worries at all, "a stranger said in a comforting tone. "I' ll cover this. "

I turned to see a woman with kind eyes and a warm smile, holding out her card to the cashier. She had  a cart full of her own groceries, yet here she was, offering to pay for a stranger's mistake.

" Are you sure?"I asked, my voice filled with a mix of gratitude and disbelief.

" Absolutely, " she replied. " But I' ll need something from you in return. "

" Anything, "I said, ready to do whatever it took to repay her kindness.

" Promise me you' ll pay it forward, " she said, her gaze (目光) meeting mine with a sincerity that touched my heart.

I nodded, my promise as firm as the resolve to make a difference. "I promise. "

As I left the store with my groceries, I couldn't shake the feeling that I had just been given a gift—a chance to make a difference in someone else's life.

Months later, I found myself driving through a quiet countryside, the scenery passing by peacefully. Up ahead, I noticed a lo ne figure by the roadside, a backpacker with her thumb out, trying to ask for a ride. Car after car sped past, leaving her in their dust. Something about her lo ne figure touched my heart.
